I am thinking of putting up NCAR graphics (the GKS version) on my DN10000 running 10.1p. I'm not planning to run X for a while. I have GPR, but have not put up GMR, though that would be possible if necessary. I have a site licence and documentation for NCAR, but before wading through this morass of abysmally written stuff, I thought I'd ask if anybody out there had any experience building this library (and especially the graphics metafile viewer) for Domain. How much trouble am I getting into? I have the 8-plane AT bus color graphics system, if that makes a difference. I don't especially like NCAR graphics, but the price is right. If anybody has any suggestions for affordable alternatives, for viewing 2D and 3D data, I'd be happy to hear about them. Does anybody have anything to say about Uniras?

Uniras is quite expensive as compared to the NCAR package. What you are wanting to view will sometimes determine the package that best fits your needs. Steve...

Does > anybody have anything to say about Uniras? Speaking for myself only, NCAR graphics is a fairly complete package. And, as you said, the price is right. We started porting ncarg3.0 to the apollos about a week ago. It seems all apollo porting problems have been ironed out. We had to modify/create about 30 files. Not bad considering it is about 15 megs. It could be better if Apollo's f77 didn't have so many optimization problems with -opt 3. If some good soul helps me with my request about gpr hatch patterns then the gpr-based ncar metafile viewer will be complete as well. We will send our modifications to NCAR (within the next 2 weeks or so; we want to make sure all goes well on the dec3100 and suns as well). You should be able to get it from them. Has anyone gotten NCAR graphics version 3 (3.01), including the ftp-able patches to run on sr10.2-3? Thanks--

From article <9103251727.AA17443@adus.ecn.uiowa.edu>, by librarian@ADUS.ECN.UIOWA.EDU (ADUS librarian): > Has anyone gotten NCAR graphics version 3 (3.01), including the > ftp-able patches to run on sr10.2-3? > > Thanks-- We installed NCAR graphics version 3.00 in March 1990 on our apollos. The changes were sent to NCAR and they were made available via anonymous ftp from bierstadt.scd.ucar.edu (internet address = 128.117.8.10 ). ftp> pwd 257 "/pub/ncarg/unix3.00/Apollo" is current directory. ftp> dir 200 PORT command successful. 150 ASCII data connection for /bin/ls (141.212.10.236,1467) (0 bytes). total 460 -rw-r--r-- 1 8257 33 3004 Apr 25 1990 BeginHere -rw-r--r-- 1 8257 10 444416 Mar 26 1990 changes.tar -rw-r--r-- 1 8257 33 8381 Nov 20 14:19 more.changes Get these files , read the file BeginHere first. Untar the file changes.tar in an appropriate location. Read the file more.changes and the file README. These changes were done so that NCAR graphics version 3.00 would compile and run on apollos at SR10.2 . I can't say anything about NCAR graphics version 3.01. We should be getting it soon now. We haven't had any problems yet with NCAR graphics version 3.00. I also recommend GPLOT, a CGM previewer (it creates better postscript files than ctrans) which you can get from calpe.psc.edu ( 128.182.66.148 ).
