[net.news.group] Why do we need both net.religion.christian and net.religion.xian?

karl@osu-eddie.UUCP (Karl Kleinpaste) (12/17/84)

Folks, we have to resolve the currently-existing conflict between the two
newsgroups net.religion.christian and net.religion.xian.

Both newsgroups exist, and we really should have only one of them. I was
personally not in favor of the creation of either, but since the one was
created (*.christian), I figured what the hay, we can run with it. Now,
however, we have a second group created (*.xian) without any discussion
whatsoever.

The stated reason for creating *.xian (can't remember who did it, but it
doesn't matter now) was that someone's notesfile software was breaking while
trying to deal with the name net.religion.christian. Someone else
subsequently posted to the effect that there are ways around this limitation
of the notesfile system, and hence the *.xian group wasn't needed.

I propose that *.xian be removed on the following grounds:

(1) There was absolutely no discussion whatsoever on the subject of the
creation of *.xian. This is flagrantly in violation of the rules (however
unenforceable they may be) which require discussion before the creation of
any newsgroup. (Although I haven't got it with me right now, I believe the
"Usenet 10 Commandments" says something cute like, "Thou shalt ponder for 40
days and 40 nights before issuing a 'create group.'")

(1) If someone's news software is breaking because of
net.religion.christian, it's their software that needs fixing. The Usenet
really doesn't need another newsgroup as a pseudo-bug-fix.

(2) The other newsgroup, net.religion.christian, already exists and is
functioning quite well already; it's breaking no one else's software. (Or,
rather, if it's breaking someone else's software, they're keeping mighty
quiet about it.)

Therefore, I submit that net.religion.xian is improper, unneeded, and
out-of-date already, and should be summarily removed by someone who knows
how to do such things (I don't; the news is one of the few tools on Unix
which I use but which I do not hack, so I've never found out how to such
administrative tasks).

Right. We don't need it. I created it. It was a mistake. I
sent out a rmgroup. I'll send another.
