[comp.sys.apollo] Network cables

bonnetf@apo.esiee.fr (bonnet-franck) (04/02/91)

Hi,

We just received our 12 new 400t and as everytime there
is no network cable inside the box ...!!!

Since APOLLO is a subsidary of HP it is the same story
we have to BUY ( 530 FF ) the network cable !
So I would like to know how a diskless node is supposed
to work without this cable ?

It seems a little bit stingy.

Is it the same in USA or other countries ???

Did you buy a 400t without a disk or a 400dl? The 400dl specifically _can_
_not_ take a ring controller -- it's native ethernet only.
For the 400t, you need to make _sure_ that you order option AL3 : a 0-cost
option that adds the Apollo Token Ring controller. This is very different
from the pure-Apollo days, when you had to order a network option with every
node. I believe that, if you forgot to, Apollo would just ship you token-ring.
That may be what some people are encountering; <Nothing> now gives you ethernet.

Only if you didn't forget to order AL3. Heck, if you want to look at stingy,
they're including _2_ controllers if you ask for it!!! Every one of our 400t
nodes is a potential gateway node -- for free! I seem to remember that Apollo
wanted about $1000 for the second controller... (the fact that it's actually
cheaper to put ethernet on the motherboard doesn't count).

All the Mentor nodes we ordered came with the ring controller. Now, this may be
because Mentor is a very big Apollo (not HP) vendor, and so they knew what their
customers would need. The HP/Apollo nodes we ordered didn't come with the
token ring. I listed it in the description, but (looking back) I think I forgot
to explicitly order Option AL3. The local office was great, and called in the
correction for us. We got our ring controllers about 5 days later. (Somebody
at the factory _did_ try and tell our rep that he'd need to "be sure they send
in the ethernet controller before you give them the ring controller"! I refused
to turn in the motherboard in exchange for a ring controller. :-)
