[comp.sys.apollo] wbak/rbak to 8mm -- retraction/clarification

thompson@PAN.SSEC.HONEYWELL.COM (John Thompson) (04/03/91)

A while ago I posted to here saying that I could not get wbak to work to the
8mm tapes -- and that I didn't think it could be done, other people's comments
notwithstanding. Well, people sent in comments on what worked for them.
Many of them were _very_ complete in their descriptions and in their setups.
(Thank you, everybody.) Well, I decided to poke around some more, and -- lo
and behold! -- it works.

--> wbak directory -dev m0 -f 1 [-nhi -pdtu -anyotheroptions]
sends the output to an 8mm tape drive that is at SCSI ID 1 (/dev/rmts8). It
takes a _long_ time before it satrts doing anything, and this may be what
was throwing me off track. You _do_ need to have 10.3 going, but we don't
have any patches loaded onto the node, so the base 10.3 installation should
do the trick for everybody. The tape drive I have is just an Exabyte -- not
from HP/Apollo, so there's nothing funky there either. It appears that you just
have to be patient. I successfully put out 2 wbak files, indexed them (I didn't
try a restore, because I was running out of time before the Omniback backups
kicked in), and used 'rwmt -dev m0 -index' to look at the tape files as well.
Everything works fine.

Here's the status of the node where I worked from :
>>> $ bldt -n //arwen
>>>      **** Node 29D5E.27D73 ****   "//arwen"
>>> Domain/OS kernel(7), revision 10.3, August 22, 1990  3:32:49 pm
>>>
>>> $ ts /usr/apollo/bin/wbak /com/rwmt
>>> Ver Name Time Stamp File Name
>>> --------------------------------------------------------------
>>> c 1 write_backup      1990/03/20 10:01:02 CST (Tue)  /usr/apollo/bin/wbak
>>> c 1 read_write_magta  1989/04/05 16:54:47 CST (Wed)  /com/rwmt
>>>
>>> $ /systest/ssr_util/scsi_info
>>> Target 0:
>>> Target does not exist
>>>
>>> Target 1:
>>> Device Type: Tape (Removable Media)
>>> Vendor: EXABYTE
>>> Product: EXB-8200
>>> Rev Level: 425A
>>> ANSI version compliance: SCSI-1
>>>
>>> Target 2:
>>> Device Type: Tape (Removable Media)
>>> Vendor: EXABYTE
>>> Product: EXB-8200
>>> Rev Level: 425A
>>> ANSI version compliance: SCSI-1
>>>
>>> Target 3:
>>> Target does not exist
>>>
>>> ...

So I guess the solution is -- keep trying -- give the wbak time -- make sure
you're at 10.3 -- make sure your tape drives are configured right (SCSI IDs 1 & 2)
with the devices built right.
