[comp.sys.apollo] Strange socket problem with apollo

hunter@bacchus.esa.oz.au (James Gardiner [Hunter]) (04/18/91)

A few weeks ago our main gateway and mail machine started to show problems.
First of all this is our setup.
We have a network of apollos and a network of sonys.
The apollo is acting as a gateway. This one apollo does mail and all spooling.

The problem is that bacchus (the problem apollo) has problems when
talking to sockets (ie nntp lpd smtp) on the sony network. (and visversa)
It takes many tries to get a connection. Even to rlogin may fail.
Spool jobs can take half an hour to reach bacchus.
mail gets stalled on the sony machines for long periods of time.
The strange part about this is that bacchus is acting 100% as a gateway.
(as the gateway works we conclude it is not a hardware problem)
Bacchus can also talk to all apollos fine.
Once a connection is made between bacchus and a sony, there is no problem.

The worst part about this is that when we reboot, the problem goes away.
It slowly gets worst over time until no connection can be made at all.

This problem just started happening out of the blue. There has been
no known changes to any hardware or configuration files on the apollo.

Has anyone ever come across any similar problem.
I have no real idea where to start. The big problem is trying to find
the actual problem in the first place. Once I know the actual problem
I can try to fix it.
