[comp.sys.apollo] Third party drives

glen@zeus.opt-sci.arizona.edu (Glen Sonnenberg) (04/27/91)

I would like to know if anyone out there has added a third party drive to
an apollo DN10000. We are running out of space and when I called HP and
asked them they said that it is using an ESDI interface and that I would
probably have to write a driver to use a third party drive. Is this true?
Also, where is a good place and how much should I spend for a 200-300 meg
drive? Thanks.

<Sigh> See the F.A.Q. list held (somewhere).
======================================================================
DISCLAIMER: I will neither vouch for, nor complain about, any of the
following companies. I have never worked for any of them, nor am I
receiving any favoritism from them. To the best of my knowledge, the
products listed are available from them, but it is not necessarily a
COMPLETE list of products -- please call them yourself.
The vendors listed are not in any particular order. I typed them as
their addresses came up in my folders.
The last three companies _appear_ to be HP suppliers primarily. If
this is true, I would expect them to deal mainly in the 9000 series
peripherals. (However -- again -- call them).
======================================================================

The disk(s) you're looking for are Maxtor XT-4380E and XT-8760E drives
(325MB and 697MB respectively). They're available from many sources.
Since I don't know (for sure) what discount we get, I won't rattle off
prices to you. The disk controller on the DN10000 is an Interphase 4201
controller with custom PROMs from HP/Apollo. Each controller can handle
two drives. Although not supported by Apollo (according to my reps), the
controller can handle 4 disks. In addition, the CONFIG program asks about
disks in a controller (0-3) and disk (0-3) manner that leads me to wonder
whether you could put on 4 drives. Sometime I'll try it, but right now,
we're a little short on playtime. Interphase also apparently has a
SCSI daughter-controller that plugs SCSI disks into it, and then that into
the ESDI controller. HP/Apollo does not support this at all, to the best of
my (current) knowledge). We have successfully set up a DN10000 with 4
controllers and 2 disks per controller (4 internal drives, 4 external drives).

The Interphase controller is available from HP/Apollo parts for about
$2400 list. The part number is 011031-001.
Maxtor disk drives are available from numerous sources.

Please notice that the list of vendors is _NOT_ my 'ESDI disk drive vendors'
list -- it's my list of many vendors from an earlier posting about memory,
disks, and other fun things.
