[comp.sys.apollo] Assembler & Domain/OS

ralf@lkn.e-technik.TU-Muenchen.DE (Ralf Hartmann) (05/15/91)

Does anyone knows how to use directly the assembler on Apollo Domain WS?
On all systems i know, the suffix '.s' tells the compiler, that this files
contain assembler code.
But on Apollo it fails.

e.g. :
	touch t.s
	cc -c t.s

and the compiler exits with 'Can't exec /bin/as'.

I have searched the whole filesystem for 'as' and 'asm' and found nothing.
I am using the BSD universe of Domain/OS SR 10.2.

Maybe again time for the 'as'-plug.

There was a time when an assembler on the Apollo's was an internal product. Not to be
used by others. (Except EOM) They had good reasons, since hacking asm wasn't the easiest
thing to do. :{ But given enough info, and effort one could get it to work.
I got a version from my support-rep for doing real strange things, no questions asked
no support delivered. (I did get a sort of a manual)

It's been a while but then after a while I got this offer to get the official version
of the assembler product version 1.0. I had to sign the std-forms about not selling it
to others, bla, bla, bla, ............

>> BUT It still was free.

So you should presure your sales-rep to get you the same kind of deal.

Mind you, you do need a manual to get all the pieces together.

Ofcourse there's always the gnu-assembler with patches from John Vasta, but then
that doesn't have any doc's at all.

Success,

Actually, the Sun3 Assembler docs work *PERFECTLY* for the gnu
assembler...

so, if you've got Apollos and are at a large site that also has Sun3s,
the appropriate documentation is hidden somewhere around...

good luck...
