[comp.sys.apollo] NFS: Mounting a Vax filesystem in Apollo network

mse@ttsi.lonestar.org (Mark Evans) (05/17/91)

Dear experts,

I want my (20) Apollo users to have access to files on a Vax via NFS. They will be
editing and compiling Vax files from the Apollo. Which approach would you take:

   1) Mount vax file system on every Apollo node.
   2) Mount vax file system on one Apollo node (perhaps in network root?) and let
everyone access through that mount point.

Educated opinions will be greatly appreciated.

I would advice against 1). You'll have to take care of all the mount points
and all nodes have to be running the NFS software (portmap, mountd or nfsd)
Next to that will the data transport be through udp/ip.

Using 2) [which I did for our one and lonely SUN] is mount it on a general
location on the gateway. [We have: /usr/sun/{root,usr,usr2}].
Then share this with mountpoint with links to other systems.

There's two reason why I didn't mount in //.
 1) I had problems with it. But then initially I had problems with everything
that NFS gave me, so it migh work for you.
 2) Suppose that you're going to have more systems[SUN's :{ ]. Then each
system gives you three more entries in //. Something I did not like.

PS: I'm promissed the patchtape info for DN10k systems as well, so hold your
    breath.
