Hello all ! 8-)) Has anyone successfully hooked up a SCSI hard disk to an HP/Apollo DN3xxx/4xxx machine ? We are looking to expand our mass storage capability, but we are getting conflicting information from various groups within HP/Apollo concerning SCSI support for the DN3k/4k series workstations. Pertinent info : 1) SCSI disks to be attached only to OS SR10.1 or higher nodes. 2) We would like to hook up SCSI drives of > 600 Mb, if possible. If anyone out there on the net has done this, could they please tell us what brand name of equipment was used (HP/Apollo, Western Digital, etc), whether or not any additional hardware was needed (SCSI controller cards, cables, etc.) and price information ? Many thanks in advance ! 8-) Randy Taylor Westinghouse Electric Corp. God only knows who in HP/Apollo is giving you a 'maybe you can' answer. You can't add SCSI devices to the DN3x00 / DN4x00 / DN5x00 series machines, unless HP/Apollo has made a _RADICAL_ change of policy. I know that Mentor (and probably 3rd party) has a SCSI board that sits in the AT-bus, and you cand access it if you use the special driver that's provided, but that will NOT give you disk services. The best (biggest) you can do with a DN3000 is a 325MB drive (Maxtor?). If you get a motherboard up-rev (to God knows what revision), the DN3500/ 4000/4500 can take the WD7000 controller, which has a SCSI bus on it. However, you can only hook up SCSI tape drives, floppies, and CD-ROMs as far as I know. Maybe you can hook up a WORM or r/w optical, which might account for the information conflict. The best (biggest) drive you can hang off a WD7000 is the Maxtor 760MB ESDI drive (Maxtor XT8760E), which'll give you 650MB formatted space. You can put 2 drives per controller, and 2 controllers per node, for 2.6GB of space. I think you'll find that the up-revs you'll need will be too pricey though. Probably better to go with a 9000/400 series node (maybe the 425E, if you have ethernet). You can hang about 9 GB of SCSI off of a 'E' or 'T' type 400 series, and 27 GB from an 'S' type 400 series (3 SCSI controllers, 6 SCSI drives per, 1.5 GB per). > "...you know I have the greatest enthusiam for the mission." HAL 9000 ^-- please fix. :-) Good Luck -- hope this helps. -- jt -- John Thompson Honeywell, SSEC Plymouth, MN 55441 thompson@pan.ssec.honeywell.com When in danger, when in doubt -- run in circles, scream and shout.

Works fine. Just call your HP sales office. We added it to a DN3550.
