Thanks to everyone that responded with ideas that worked to change the effective user id for a process started from crontab. The key seems to be to use the '-c "command line"' option to su. Strangely there doesn't seem to be any mention of it in the man pages on our sequent, although after it was pointed out to me (thanks rich) I found it documented on a couple other systems we have, and it does seem to be working fine here. example line: 30 * * * * su uucp -c "/bin/sh /usr/lib/news/cleanstuff" Dewey Henize Execucom Systems. -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- | There is nothing in the above message that can't be explained by sunspots. | | execu!dewey Dewey Henize | | Can you say standard disclaimer?
