I am in the process of adding the X11 Framemaker version to our SUN/2 machine and have some questions regarding performance and availability of an X11 version that runs on the SUN/2 (I found out that SUN will not offeringg their X11 version until July but not for their 3.2 UNIX version). We are currently using the standard Suntools Framemaker version. The idea behind adding the X11 Framemaker version is to allow users remote access to Framemaker. I have asked around (SUN Microsystems, MIT Licensing Office) about an X11 version running on the SUN/2 and X11-Framemaker performance and got answers that are not to encouraging: the performance would be poor at best and compiling the MIT X11 3.0 version would not be an easy thing. We have an S81 connected to our SUN through the Ethernet and would very much like to see a port of Framemaker for the Sequent (then we'd really be in good shape). Framemaker and Sequent are dancing together without reaching any decision as to whether a port is a feasible thing to expect within the near future. I've contacted both Framemaker and Sequent and expressed our need to have Framemaker ported to the Sequent (Balance too for that matter) but they keep telling us that negotiations are underway. If any of you needs or will need to have Framemaker running under Dynix, please call your local Sequent sales rep. and let them know. Maybe they won't pay attention to one customer but they surely will do something if all of you phone in. For the time being I'll have to try to at least test X11 Framemaker on the the SUN/2 (I hope it is not as slow as people tell me). So: Does any one know of a site that got X11 3.0 from MIT running on a SUN/2? (I have SUN 4.2 version 3.2 running on our SUN/2) I intend to purchase the tape from MIT if I get enough indication that I will be able to get X11 running on the SUN/2. Any info about these issues will be appreciated. Robert Young uunet!peregrine!robert (714)727-3341, Ext 167
