Dr. Jiachang Sun, Minnesota Supercomputer Institute and
Computing Center, Academia Sinica, will speak on ``B-
Spline Finite Element Methods''.

TIME: 4:00 PM

ROOM: DC 1304

ABSTRACT

This talk will introduce the current state of
development of computations based on bivariate
polynomials and piecewise polynomials over triangular
partitions. As an application we will show how to
construct comforming bivariate cubic B-spline elements
for solving the following bending problem with clamped
plates

                      2
                Delta W = f/D in R,

                     W     = partial W/partial n      = 0
                      Gamma Gamma

on Gamma here R is a convex domain which can completely divided
with a three-direction mesh, and Gamma is the boundary.
The approximation has been shown to have order O(h) in
           2
the space H (O). Numerical examples will be given.
