The following article appeared on page 20 of the Oct. 2, 1989 issue of "Unix Today!". It implies, but doesn't state explicitly, that Sequent is now selling Exabyte-type tape drives, at topic which has been raised in this newsgroup a number of times. Does anyone know more about this? What type of disk drive is being used? Prices?? Tim Morgan UC Irvine ICS Dept. Sequent Computer Systems is offering new memory devices in the gigabyte range and a peripherals controller to enhance its hardware's performance as database platforms. The disk drive, tape drive and distributed terminal controller are designed for Sequent's Symmetry series of computers. The 8-inch disk drive has a 988-Mbyte capacity, giving the Symmetry system a total storage capacity of 32 gigabytes. The tape drive stores up to 2 gigabytes on an industry-standard 8m tape cartridge, with helical-scan, high-density recording. The distributed terminal controller can connect up to 1,024 terminals or printers to Symmetry computers remotely, using a few cables leading to clusters of up to 128 peripherals each. Sequent can be reached at 503-626-5700.
