[comp.sys.sequent] tape drive connections

battan@qtc.UUCP (Jim Battan) (12/09/89)

Does anyone have a Symmetry hooked up to an STC-protocol 1/2" tape drive
(presumably through a Pertec-to-STC protocol converter)?
If so, I'd like to talk to you. Send me some e-mail or call me at
800/234-0168.
Thanks,

We have two System Industries STC tri-density tape drives (model 9700-53
if I recall correctly) running on our Symmetry S81. We interfaced them
to the multibus using a non-standard Xylogics 472-902 tape controller
and a Zetaco Pertec-STC converter box, both from Interscience Computer
Corporation.

The Xylogics tape controller is not the standard "off the shelf" version -
it has a special eprom (provided by Interscience) which must be at a certain
revision level. Also, we had to fiddle with the timing delays on the converter
box to get it to work. I forgot the exact details but I have them somewhere
in my notes.

They've been working fine ever since. We dump several gigabytes worth of
data every week with no problem. Feel free to call me for more details.

ps. Our inbound dial-up links are screwed up right now due to the sudden
unexpected activation of the Defender system on our data switch so
I wouldn't trust UUCP mail to hacgate. I've got someone working the
problem but I don't know how long it will take before our links are
back up. I don't even know if this article will make it out.
