Abstract:

Dual scaling is a quantification method for categorical data, also known as
correspondence analysis, optimal scaling, biplot, homogeneity analysis, and
so forth. In early days of fifty-five years of its history, several statisticians
contributed to its development, to name a few: H.O. Hirschfeld (Hartley, 1935),
R.A. Fisher (1940), E.J. Williams (1952) and H.O. Lancaster (1958). This talk
will look at its historical development, common ideas behind a plethora of
names, basic formulations, and recent work carried out in Toronto.
