Sequent charges $12,500 for their approved Exabyte drive. Part of this price is for firmware changes to prevent the drive from hanging when dumping a large file system. We are not happy about this price. Contemporary Cybernitics Group (CCG) sells an Exabyte with a Pertec interface for considerably less. The CY-8200-S81 is supported on Sequents (by CCG), and presumably will work on an S27. I'm waiting to hear from one of their engineer's about the "large file system problem." The other companies called only support SCSI Exabytes on Macs, or HP and SUNs. Have you have heard anything (good or bad) about CCG, or of any problems with backing up large file systems. The Cy-8200 sounds very good over the phone and on paper; now I'm hunting for some Symetry specific information. Sequent's 8mm drive is made by a company called Megatape. I'm expecting them to call back this afternoon. Thank You, Mike. Michael D. Sofka INTERNET: mike@pubserv.com Publication Services, Inc. ATTNET: +1-217-398-2060 1802 South Duncan Rd. Sofka INTERNET: mike@pubserv.com We have the Megatape GT/88-1, which Alliant also OEM's. It has a Pertec interface which lets it imitate a 1/2" reel tape drive, which is pleasantly already supported by just about everyone. I've been using it (currently connected to our Alliant) for all of our backups (including one Sequent B8 and one S81) since last October with no problems in either backups or restores. I am planning on moving our 8mm drive to one of our Sequent machines very soon, so should be able to verify this myself. Our largest single file system is on one entire Eagle disk drive (355 Mb). Perhaps dumping those new 1 Gb drives (Fujitsu M2382K) cause problems with some block counters in /etc/dump when the entire thing is dumped to one tape.
