DAVIS BUILDING OPENING SPECIAL COLLOQUIUM Enhancing Computer Usability How we got here and where we are going by Prof. J. Wesley Graham Dean of Computing and Communications and Prof. Donald D. Cowan Department of Computer Science University of Waterloo Abstract Since the founding of the University, substantial research effort has been focussed on making the computer more accessible and us- able for both students and faculty. These activities range from the development of WATFOR and its successors in the early 60's to the introduction of the microcomputer-based JANET and WATSTAR lo- cal area networks early in this decade. Personal acquisition of microcomputers adds a new dimension to the computer usability problem and Project ARIES is exploring the implications of this trend for both on-campus and distance education students. This talk will trace the history and future directions of research in computer usability at Waterloo, and discuss the active role played by many of the corporate partners in these investigations. DATE: Thursday, November 10, 1988 TIME: 3:15 p.m. (After Opening Ceremony) PLACE: University of Waterloo, Davis Centre, Room 1302 Everyone is welcome.
