[comp.sys.sequent] Serial lines and the "special" cable

kherron@ms.uky.edu (Kenneth Herron) (05/19/91)

We have a sequent symmetry running dynix 3.1, with ten modems attached
to serial ports. The modems are wired with the special serial cables
described in st(4), and generally work well.

Three of these modems are "buffering" modems, two telebits and one MNP
modem. We can set the serial port to run at 9600 baud with these ports,
but if the phone connection can't keep up the remote user starts losing
characters. We can't set xon/xoff flow control in the modem, because we
run uucp over these lines.

The wiring description includes connecting the CTS signal between the
modem and computer, but doesn't describe how that signal is used by the
sequent.

If I set these modems to use RTS/CTS, will the respect the CTS signal?
RTS is not hooked up of course, but the telebits at least can be set to
use CTS one way and no flow control the other.

If anyone has solved this problem some other way, I'd like to hear about
it.

Assuming we can solve this, do the serial ports run reliably at 19.2k?
