          Prof. Paul Larson
          Department of Computer Science
          University of Waterloo

          Abstract

LauRel is a "postrelational" database system under development at
Waterloo. Its data model is an extension of the relational model
and its query language (SQL/W) is based on SQL. Support for
set-valued attributes (nested relations) and reference attributes
(pointers) have been incorporated into the first version of the
query language. Several other extensions are under considera-
tion. The system is designed to run on a shared-memory multipro-
cessor machine and to fully exploit the parallelism provided by
such a machine. The talk will begin with an overview of LauRel
and then two issues will be discussed in more detail: the query
language and the query processing architecture.
