COLLOQUIUM - Tuesday, February 14, 11 a.m. in Room SF 1105 (SF = Sandford Fleming Building, 10 King's College Road) Bill Buxton University of Toronto "EuroPARC: Establishing a New Approach to Human-Computer Interaction" Two years ago, Rank Xerox established a laboratory in Cambridge, England, to study human-computer interaction (HCI). The lab, EuroPARC, is a satel- lite of Xerox's Palo Alto Research Centre. EuroPARC is interesting in that it is taking a somewhat new approach to HCI research. To begin with, the focus is not on the traditional single- user/single-machine view of interaction. Rather, it is far more interested in the larger picture of technology in the context of groups and organiza- tions. It has also chosen to focus on the meta issues of HCI, that is, the process of analysis and design. To support new approaches to interaction and collaboration, and to provide the basic tools of research, the lab has made a large investment in audio, video, and communications media. This talk presents an overview of the lab, its objectives, its relation- ship to PARC, and summarizes some of the work in progress. The presenta- tion will include a video tour of EuroPARC. _____________________________________________________________ The seminar by Professor Avi Kak scheduled for January 26, 1989 was can- celled the night before, because all flights in and out of Chicago and the vicinity were cancelled that evening due to fog. Due to the last minute nature of the cancellation, it was difficult to notify in time all reci- pients of our seminar announcements. Professor Kak's seminar has been ten- tatively rescheduled for April 1989, and will appear again in the regular seminar announcements. Our apologies to all those who did show up for the seminar on January 26. -- Jim Clarke -- Dept. of Computer Science, Univ. of Toronto, Canada M5S 1A4 (416) 978-4058 BITNET,CSNET: clarke@csri.toronto.edu CDNNET: clarke@csri.toronto.cdn UUCP: {allegra, cornell, decvax, linus, utzoo}!utcsri!clarke
