    SYSTEMS SEMINAR - Tuesday, February 7, 2.00 p.m. in Room GB 244
(GB = Galbraith Building, 35 St. George Street)

                              James Menendez
                     National Computer Security Center

                       "What is Computer Security?"

The National Computer Security Center talks about trusted systems, but how
is a trusted system different from a secure system? A review of the com-
puter security control objectives as stated in the Trusted Computer System
Evaluation Criteria (TCSEC) will be given. What the TCSEC is and what the
characteristics of each class are will be presented.

Why did the National Computer Security Center decide to look specifically
at the UNIX operating system for developing guidance? A presentation of
the goals and deliverables of TRUSIX will be given. I will go into how the
work is done and issues that have come up as the work is being done. I
will also give a status of what we have completed and when we will be fin-
ished.

This will lead into a discussion about standards, including UNIX standards,
e.g., POSIX, X/Open.
