[comp.sys.m68k.pc] selling m68k computer system

neville%hebron@ADS.COM (Neville Newman) (06/01/88)

 	68K Computer System for sale:

	Stride 440

	CPU: 10Mhz 68000
	Bus: VME
Mem: 2 megabytes installed on CPU board, ready
accept 2 more megabytes in sockets on Winch.
	       board
Disk: 1 20Mb drive, will control up to 4 drives,
so you could about 1/2 Gigabyte if desired
Curent configuration has room for another 1/2
		 height drive in cabinet.
	       2 DSDD 96TPI 5.25" floppy drives (1 is only
reliable for reading) The floppy driver
is easily configured to just about any
		 format you desire (incl. IBM-PC)
Tape: 1 Controller for QIC-O2 (Quarter Inch Cartridge)
tape device. (uses the same tapes as Suns,
Symbolics and TI lisp machines, etc.)
		 i don't have a drive, but i can connect
you with a source ($700 or less for a drive.
Net: 1 high speed Omninet port
Data: 10 serial ports, up to 38.4K baud each, can be
configured in either polled or interrupt
		 mode.
	       1 parallel port, Centronics
	Display:
1 Liberty Electronics Freedom 200 terminal
14" screen, tilt/swivel, amber phosphor, up to
4 pages of screen memory, 2 data ports, character
sets for keyboard (remote or from keyboard, and not
just Function keys), separate arrow, editing, and
accountant's keypads. i really love this terminal,
it has the best keyboard layout i've ever used, and
only lacks downloadable character sets. In my
opinion, the best model Liberty ever made, and one
		 of the best period.
Comm: 1 Prometheus ProModem, only 1200 baud but rock-solid
reliability, and mucho expandable. It is kind enough
to pass a second line through to a handset so you
can order pizza while downloading nethack.

Extras: 12Mhz upgrad kit (new 68000 and related components)
		 still in box.
i still have all the original boxes and packing for
		 safe shipping.
All manuals, original distribution and update disks.

Op-Sys: There are over a dozen commercial operating systems
for this machine, including UniStride, an excellent
SysV/BSD merge. [ Note: The Stride also has a neat
low-level multi-user BIOS, enabling it to run MULTIPLE
DIFFERENT operating systems CONCURRENTLY if you need]
		 Supplied with my system are:
			  CP/M-68K - a good system that has
					     had bad press. C library
					     has Unix V7 system calls
					     and many Unix programs
					     port trivially. i also have
					     code written by Bob Heller
					     of UMass that effects pass-
					     worded logins and priviledge
					     checking (like VMS) for
					     multiuser use. Also have
					     MicroEmacs, Kermit, and
Lmodem pgms [and a few others].
P-system - interpreted op sys that has
					     long been hot with high-
					     powered business system users
who were sick of IBM PCs and
					     MSDOS. i don't use it, but i
					     was getting updates anyway just
					     in case.

To change to Unix, you would have to get Stride's
		 68010 + MMU daughter board.

Comments: If you're looking for a machine on which to play
Ms. Pac Man, this one isn't for you. i bought this
machine when i was in grad school with the intent
of doing some serious hacking. It is a fantastic
developer's machine and one of the few VME systems
		   available as a complete package.
With 10 superfast, superconfigurable serial ports
plus the parallel port, (BTW, all serial lines and
Omninet use RJ14 type connectors) you can hook up a
speech synthesizer a home controller system, a modem,
another computer, 2 or more printers, and still have
		   lots left over.
There are a couple of dozen companies that make VME
add ons to do just about any function you could dream
up, including high-res bitmapped color graphics. Strides
are often used as factory controllers and controlling
other highly specialized equipment like 3 axis movie
		   cameras.
It would also be great as an office database machine,
with monster disk capacity and a terminal for each
		   office worker.
For the last year, i have mainly used the machine to
write letters for my side business, and to dial up
at work after hours. This is hardly efficient use of
		   over $10,000 in computer equipment.

Price: $2200.00 or best offer; i'd like someone to get this
machine who can make use of its potential, i just
don't have the time or the inclination anymore. i'd
rather build high-tech engines - speeding up Emacs
doesn't give quite the same kick in the pants.

Info: My addresses, phone numbers, etc. are given below.
i'll be glad to take calls at home until 11pm Pacific
time. For info from other Stride owners/users, ask on
		   comp.sys.m68k or comp.sys.m68k.pc . You can also
call Stride Micro (it is a div. of MicroSage Comp.)
and ask them to send you product literature -
		   their # is
