Is there any possibility of the Moto 68040 CPU being pin-compatible with
the Moto 68030?  Does anyone know for sure?

The parts are not pin-compatible.  The 040's inclusion of the
floating point processor on-chip is one reason.  The parts *are*
software-compatible.
