I may be wrong, but I believe that the anti-virals are getting to PUCC

Subject: Accessing Audio CDs from HyperCard

I have been working on writing a set of XCMDs that would access
audio CDs from within HyperCard. In particular I would like to be
able to access the CD by min, sec, frame information, rather than by
track number -- this would make it possible to generate music
appreciaton stacks, or an interactive story stack based upon a
narrative CD, by allowing each track to be divided into smaller
playing units that would coincide with need/or card design. Using the
Apple CD SCSI developer's guide, I have had partial success -- I can
access specific tracks (by track number) and play/pause/play them.
But I have run into the following two problems:

1. I cannot figure out how to get min, sec, frame information passed
to the drive, based upon the information in the developer's guide --
and there isn't any sample code provided that covers this. There is a
small example C program that uses track number access, and although I
am programming in Pascal, I was able to use that to get as far as I
can. Can anyone help out here with an example of getting to a
specific min, sec, frame point using the Device Manager
Control(refNum,ATrkSearch,@csparams) call? I would greatly appreciate
it.

2. My second problem relates to getting information from the drive
using the ReadQ (where are we in track, min, sec, frame) and AStatus
(what are we doing, where are we) calls. These are defined in the
developer's guide as Control calls to the Device Manager (and are
accepted as such), but Control calls pass information *to* the drive,
and I want to get information *from* the drive -- i.e. make a Status
call. However, a call like Status(refNum,AStatus,@csparams) returns
an OSErr: "this status call not recognized by driver". Doing the same
with a Control call returns no error, but also returns no information.
Can anyone send me examples (in Pascal) that show how to extract
information using the ReadQ and AStatus calls?

I really need this help as soon as possible.

Thanks,

Subject: DA's to go away??

There is some talk around on the nets that in an upcoming revision of the
operating system that DA's are going to cease to be supported! Huh!?!?

Before I flame this: Can anyone confirm/deny or add details? Offhand, it sounds
like the dumbest thing Apple could do. I sure hope this rumor is untrue.

Subject: How convert scanned text back to ASCII ??

Dear Net,

We want to convert printed text back to ascii files by using a scanner and a
software package. I recall having seen this subject some time ago
on the net. My questions are:

1) does this require a scanner and software by the same manufacturer
or do these packages read different types of scanned files ?

2) could someone inform me on a scanner and software package that
   has good performance ?

Thanks in advance,

Subject: Need Information on ADAPTEC 4000A and SF&I

Hi -
I am trying to build a hard disk drive for my Mac using the Sep and Oct
articles in Computer Shopper. I am using the ADAPTEC 4000A controller and
Ephriam Vishniac's SF&I software.
The first problem I have is that the store that I bought the controller
>From (Computer Surplus Store in Milpitas, CA) did not supply the documentation.
If any one has the ACB-4000 Series User's Manual from ADAPTEC, Inc., please
contact me. If it is not a copyright publication, I would like to pay for
copying and postal charges to get a copy.
The second problem is that the SF&I program that I got from SUMEX-AIM
does not appear to be the same as the program show Shopper
article. The copy that I have does not have the SCMD "Mode" command. Also,
a couple of the SCMD IDs are different. For example, the program that I have
shows the SCMD "Format" command ID to be 129 and the article shows it to be 130.
Can some one get me set in the right direction on this? If any one has
successfully used SF&I, please send me a copy (BINHEX and PackIt or StuffIt)
to my email address above. Thanks.

Subject: Programming the Mac
Can anyone tell me the best method to get started programming the
Macintosh? In particular, I would like to be able to:
1) write a "shell" type program for a hard drive so that users would see
only the choice of files I show them
2) write a program to search for and delete files not on a master list
3) write a startup procedure so that when an application such as MacWrite
begins, it defaults to draft mode for output.

I don't know if any or all of these are possible, but I'd appreciate
any help in pointing me in the right direction. Please reply directly
to me. Thank you!

Subject: question on vt100

HHHEEELLLPPPP

They are driving me crazy!!

I changed from that type of computer that you MAC freaks
never want to talk of, got into the promised world of
Macintosh User Friendly computers..

Oh dear, how friendly is friendly. I spent some time in
DOS and know all the in and outs, including keyboard
reassignment.
I'm working now with a Mac Plus using Mac Kermit 9.40 for
communications. Unfortunately there are many occasions that
I'm connected to a DEC of VAX demanding me to use (not always)
keys like PF2 or HELP on the VT100 keyboard.
Well, I would not knwo where to look for such a key on this
small Mac Plus Keyboard. All my knowledge on keyboard
reassignment on the XXXPC has not helped me either.
Hooray, there was a VT100 Maculator on the MACSERV. Got that
one, but no, no documentation and no PF2 or something link that

Who could give me som help. I work a lot with my Mac, but I'm not
interested in a course on Mac-programming , since I do not have
any programming language but MS-BASIC. Furthermore, what about
that userfriendly interface?

Any help will be welcome.

Please answer directly: SURF050@HTIKUB5

I'll compile all reactions for other unexperienced users
thanks again.

Subject: Supressing LW TestPage

Greetings,

Since this is my first communication with you, I thought I'd introduce myself.
My name is Peter Jorgensen and I am the microcomputer specialist of the
Computer Center at Colgate University. I have overall responsiblity for
all academic microcomputer user support. I support both MS-DOS and Macintosh
users, though am partial towards the Mac. I work with two other user services
people, one who concentrates on VAX support and the other who specializes
in word processing (i.e. WordPerfect on MS-DOS). I have been a heavy user
of AppleLink, but my boss is unhappy (as I am) with the expense, so I'm
hoping this (Infomac) will be a good alternative.

My question for today is: How can I suppress the test page on a LaserWriter
Plus? I have downloaded the following lines of PostScript code (successfully,
I'm told by SendPS) but the test page still comes out when the LW is restarted
(or rebooted by SendPS):
              serverdict begin 0 exitserver
              statusdict begin
              dostartpage false
              end
Thanks, and I look forward to 'talking' to you often.

Subject: Video Mac Applications

Greetings,

I'm in search of information concerning the use of a Macintosh to
overlay a video signal on a VCR recording. I'm going to be filming a
chemistry show, and we recieved a grant to buy all the equipment,
etc., but I need a nice way to put titles, structures, and other stuff
on the screen. I would prefer to use the computer to do this rather
then traditional techniques, so I thought I would look into it. As I
recall, it is possible to some really neat things with a Mac and a
VCR, but I have no experience in this particular area.

I have both Mac+/SE's and II's. I'd appreciate any information people
have on hardware, experiences, software, etc. Thanks!
