Subject: Bug report for Launch INIT

     Howdy,

Since I don't have the address for the author of the Launch INIT handy, I would
like to post this bug report to the Digest.

When I saw notice of this INIT, I saw an answer to one of my needs for
gathering data for our Mac Lab. I promptly downloaded it, checked it out with
Disinfectant, and then loaded it onto a new set of system boot disks. All was
fine until users tried to use applications that depended heavily on PICT
resources (In our case, Cricket Graph and MacDraw II). It seems that when the
users tried to open existing files or save new ones, the Mac responded with
a dialog box and an error code of -42. Not knowing exactly what this was, but
armed that Launch INIT was the most recent thing added to the System Folder,
I deleted it and then re-booted. Lo and Behold if things weren't back to
normal (what ever that is supposed to be :-} )

Has anyone else encountered this? And if the author is out there and would
like more detailed info, please contact me.

Subject: Building a small network of Macs...

Would anyone care to enlighten me as to the ins and outs of Macintosh
networking? I work in a small company where there are two Mac IIs and
a Mac Plus being used. We'd like to hook them together to increase
their usefulness. We're starting pretty much from scratch; the only
other equipment that will probably come in handy are two Nuvotech
TurboNet boxes (that we used to hook one of the Mac IIs to a visiting
LaserWriter awhile ago).

Our needs are:
  a) NO SERVERS - We're not rich (yet), and we'd all like to continue
using the machines that we have. This rules out AppleShare, I
     guess...

  b) share files - Two of us develop software, and often work on the
same project. Right now, we both maintain copies of the sources
on both machines, with one of us integrating his changes into the
master source. This is a pain, and my being able to change files
on the other machine would be quite helpful.

  c) messaging - Something like Broadcast would probably do. Real email
     would be even better.

  d) sharing printer(s) - See (a). We're not rich (yet), and all we have
here now is a couple of Imagewriters. Is there an alternative to
upgrading one or both to be Appletalk Imagewriters? (Would such a
solution require enough of the CPU that we'd want to upgrade the
Imagewriters so that the person printing would be talking directly
     to the printer.)

  e) hook up other machines - Eventually we'd might like to hook up an
IBM clone to this network. Not a big consideration... We also have
an old Alpha Micro machine with a bunch of disk space that we could
use for archival storage, if hooking up were not too much a problem.

So, the question of the day - what hardware and software do we need?

By eliminating AppleShare because of (a) above, it looks to me like that
leaves Tops and something called "Personal Server Network" from Information
Presentation Technologies, Inc. Can anyone give me the pros and cons of
choosing one over the other? I'm tending to lean towards PSN because I've
heard that they adhere to AFP, where Tops has it's own protocol.

And that leaves me to solve (c), (d), and (e) with other hardware/software.
Any suggestions for email for a small set of machines? Network print
spoolers?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Subject: HOW TO ACCESS THE SERIAL PORT FROM HYPERCARD? HERE ARE THE ANSWERS.

I asked two or three weeks ago suggestions about driving the serial port
>From Hypercard. Here is a summary of the answers I've got:

1) By the HyperCard serial communication toolbox from APDA for $20. Then you
will have a complete set of tools for serial communications including xmodem.
BUT ! In Italy to be allowed to buy any piece of software from APDA you MUST
join APDA, which will cost you at least 400 $ per year !!!

2) In Developers stack (1.1 and 1.2) there are also some simple cmds for
serial comm, these are shareware.

3). There are also several stacks out with serial port controllers. Among those
are:
- HyperBBS, available for anonymous ftp from sumex-aim.stanford.edu.
- Hyperterminal 3.0 (shareware) which provides access and terminal emulation.
- HyperUNIX system developed by Greg Anderson, avaliable by anonymous ftp from
ssyx.ucsc.edu (the XCMDs and XFCNs for serial comm. contained here were pulled
out from HyperBBS)
- The Dartmouth XCMD collections have source codes for a couple of serial
controllers.

I found out a bit more about Layers, the init that accumulates icons of open
applications ina small relocatable but unclosable window that floats on top
of everything else on the desktop (better than mousing up to multifinder
icon top right, cuz it's random access rather than sequential).

It was written by Mike Kahl (sp?) of Think LightSpeed C fame, it's PD, and
it was presented at the last MacHack in Ann Arbor.

If I could figure out a way to send it to the archives via Bitnet, I would;

I tend to use MacDraw for that sort of thing. Choose sideways printing
in page setup, and set drawing size to whatever ( 8 feet may be the limit
unless you print at 400%, in which case I think you get 32 feet). Also
set to 'no breaks between pages'.

There is such a critter for the Mac. It is called "banner" and
prints a string sideways in 6 or 8 inch letters. It is very old,
(c.1985!) but I think it still works on my SE/Imagewriter I.
I havn't the vaugest idea if it works on a laser printer.
(I just looked at the INFO. It is by John Gregory, Powertools Software,

I think it is available from BCS-MAC.

My thanks to these fine folks for replying. The BillBoard program is a
commercial shareware product from CE Software. The banner program, samples
and documentation are held back as enticement to pay the 35 dollar shareware
fee, whereupon they are shipped to you. I guess it boils down to BillBoard

I am interested in purchasing the GCC Business Laser printer (BLP) for a

performance as compared to the Laserwriter NTX. The latest issue of Mac

One difference, however, is a significant reduction in the lifetime copy

After talking with Gary Jennings with Apple in Charlotte, he told

Well, I've installed the card, and I believe I need an Appletalk
software package. Is this true? Can I just use the card as if
it was a serial or parallel port?

What else is involved here?

Sounds great... once Apple produces a Color Mac for under $1000 (that
INCLUDES the monitor!) And let's make sure that the Mac version is GS
compatible. This means full Ensoniq support, graphics, etc.

I think Apple is moving in that direction, but for now, the II line is
still cost-effective.

We are trying to set up a computer learning center based on Mac IIcx machines.
We would like to put a LaserWriter IINTX in as well, BUT we have heard horror
stories from another group on campus about fraternities who print 300 copies
of a 3-page newsletter, or people who decide to run off the required 10 copies
of their thesis on the machine, etc. I remember hearing somewhere about a
piece of PostScript code that would limit the number of pages printed per job,
and only allow one copy to be printed. This might raise the frustration level
to the point where people would take the ONE copy to a copy service (what a
concept!). Does anyone know of such a program, and if so, where can I get it?
I would be happy to retreive it from another site and post it to the archives
if someone would point me in the right direction (surely we're not the only

   my ][+'s monitor is dead.

Yes, there is a Mac Kermit (available by ftp from cunixc.columbia.edu)
and from OKSTATE (for most UUCP sites, although the instructions are
a bit complex).

You would be more likely to get details about how to get Kermit and other
pulic domain or shareware communications software for the Macintosh from
info-mac@sumex-aim.Stanford.Edu (I'm copying info-mac to hurry that along
a little :-)

Subject: Zenith FTM monitor for Macs

I read in MacWeek a few weeks ago about some company that had come up
with a way to connect the Zenith FTM monitor to the Macintosh. But,
now that I need to find the information, I don't remember which issue
it was from. Could someone please refresh my memory?

Has anyone had any experience with this product on the Mac?

Thanks,
