Bill ------------------------------ Date: 15 Oct 1989 11:43:57 EST From: DECNET.DEFAULT@aeolus.tamu.edu Subject: Chooser Question Hi. I would like to know if there is a way to modify the Chooser DA so that certain printers do not show up in the listing while remaining on the same LocalTalk network. We try to keep the Macs set on which printer they are supposed to output to, but people keep changing this. I tried locking the LaserWriter system document, but this causes other problems, including not changing the processing documents name. All of our Macs (7 SE's, 1 Plus) are connected to a Shiva NetModem, so we can't split the network - at least not without a lot of excess costs. Also, could someone please tell me whether or not a Mac IIcx can be purchased with a second internal FDHD drive? The way I have heard it, there is no external floppy drive port on the unit, and have yet to see any advertised with two internal drives. All the 'knowledgeable' salespeople that I have asked either told me that they come with two drives (although they claim they don't order any of those), or that, if you got a second internal FDHD, you would lose the 20 meg hard drive that comes on the basic unit. I would like to hear from someone who has bought a IIcx if they are able to get another FDHD, or how they have worked around it. My only chance at getting my superiors to purchase a color Mac is if the price is low enough, but I insist on having two floppy drives. If there is not a way to add a second drive - and I hope Apple is listening in - then perhaps Apple has screwed up again. Probably not for the last time, either. If someone could send the info to me, or the to net, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. I was writing a test program with 4 windows in Think C 3.0 I also used printf and stdio. My problem comes when I write the main event loop. After calling ok = GetNextEvent, if ok is TRUE then I proceed further. For each event, I used printf as feedback. The funny thing is, when I am not doing anything, the program kept printing "update", meaning that an update event occurs. I thought a null event is more appropriate. Hey y'all (Texas greeting), Seems Apple has been having some more trouble with internal 40 and 80 MB harddrives. Infact, they just issued (about 2-3 days ago) another recall. This one applys to all Quantum HDs of the 40 and 80 MB size. They must have variation code 0032, 0034, or 0058 on them. This code can be found on the end of the drive near the 50-pin SCSI connector (if you open your mac, you void your 90 day...etc.). The symptoms are exactly as described in issue #178 by the guy with the IIc. The problem (I think) stems from the fact that these drives don't get enough use. The grease, unexercised, hardens up -- thus the drives can't get up to speed. So the fix is to replace the ROM in the HD unit. The new ROM will exercise the drive, to loosen up the grease, before reading data. At least, that is what the apple guy told me. Gordon. Help! I have a MAC-SE with a 20 meg internal hard drive. I recently upgraded to 2.5 megs, using 1 meg simms. I performed the upgrade myself following the guidelines in the feb88 issue of MacUser, Installing the simms in group "A" and removing the 256K resistor from the logic board. Everything worked fine, "About finder" told me the new memory was available, and when I turned on the ram cache I did notice an improvement in system performance. All my applications liked the extra memory, and there was great rejoicing throughout the land. Then I tried to format a blank floppy in the internal drive, and the system crashed in a most specticular way (lights, sound, the works!). Anyway, when I tried it again, the same resulted. After repeated tries, I now get one of 2 outcomes when I initialize a blank floppy; Either the crash described earlier, or the system reboots itself. What's wrong?!?!?! Is it hardware or software or both? I've tried different combinations of removing my inits, turning ram cache on/off but nothing seems to work. I'm running system 6.0.3, finder 6.1. Pros - Everyone responding said the package did all that was expected of it. Each said that it was a cost effective solution. Most said that they have not found an application that would not run (software that was mentioned that they found worked just fine was Lotus, Excel, multiple word processing packages, even SAS-PC) No hardware is required. Just install the software and run. No disk partitioning is required. All PC files are stored in a single Macintosh folder. A laserwriter is supported. Cutting from a PC application and pasting into a Macintosh application is supported and gives the user access to all Mac fonts. Cons - The execution speed is that of an XT. One person estimated the speed at around 4.7Mhz. It handles only CGA. Programs are limited to those that can run in 640K. Thanks to all those who responded and to Darryl who took the time to actually give me a demo of the product.
