Hello. After years of trying, we have finally gotten approval to order 2 (count them!) Macintosh computers. Since I asked for them, I get to write up the specifications for what I want. HELP! I have been surrounded by Big Blue and don't even know what to ask for! Most of you will want to know: What does she want to do with it? It makes a big difference. That is where the problem lies. I work in User Services and just want to have a couple of Macs available for our users (give them a choice, not just IBM!) Let's just say I want to do plain old word processing to begin with. We've got WordPerfect on the IBM. I'd also love to do DTP on it and get away from Ventura Publisher on the IBM. Many thanks in advance if you can point me in the right direction. I apologize if I've left any important info out. I can post responses to the list if anyone else is interested. It occures to me that a simple loop calling DriveStatus (IM: II-215) with different (sequential) drive numbers will fail at the first non-existant drive with a nsDrvErr (no such drive). The new Disk Driver numbers all drives contiguously, so there are no gaps in the drive numbers, as there could be in the old system for instance on an SE with one internal and one external drive. I am interested in purchasing a tape drive unit to back up an AppleShare Server and a number of hard disk Macs. I read the review of tape backup units in the December MacUser, and am leaning toward the MagicTape 60 CT-600H tape unit. An added advantage to this unit (besides cost) is that it comes bundled with the Retrospect backup program (a very powerful piece of software). Does anyone have any experience with this drive, or CT-600H drives in general? I would appreciate any help. BTW: The cost of the unit is $695.00 and the 60MB tapes cost $30.00 Thanks. It emulates an unenhanced Apple //e with 128k of ram and two super serial cards. The emulation is pretty darn good. It is uncanny how it reacts like a real Apple ][. It does run on macs from the 512 up through the Mac IIs but it does not support color on any of them. You must be in 2 bit (monochrome) mode to use it. It is slow, really slow. My Mac II running ][ in a Mac runs Apple // programs at about 3/4 the speed of a real 1Mhz Apple //e. The program can use your 800k Mac drive as an Apple II unidisk, allowing you to read and write directly from Apple // ProDOS formatted 3.5" diskettes. ][ in a Mac's handling of the 80 column screen is very clumsy. It works. Its not too expensive. Call the publisher for more specifics. There was one other Apple II Emulator available in the past, It was a more interesting emulation, but the 128k Mac roms broke it, and the publisher never upgraded the product. Therefore it only runs on the Mac 128 and 512. Not too useful and I doubt you would be able to find it. Other important details are: I'm using a IIcx I'm using colour QD, displaying a dialog with a colour PICT, and a coloured edit text box When it does crash, it displays the dialog quite happily, but bombs when I hit a key (ie enter some text into the edit box) Any ideas?? - Sam - JANET: DeaneS@qgb.bristol.ac.uk ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Nov 89 22:26:07 GMT From: Andrew <AJM19%phoenix.cambridge.ac.uk@nsfnet-relay.ac.uk> Subject: Keyboard Layout Dear Netters, A friend was asking me how he could turn the keyboard into the German version... I want them to work together and make it posible to have grafics shared. Reason 1: attached to the MS-DOS machine there is photoequipment Reason 2: attached to the Mac's is a high quality laser With some networking and some software we should be able to share. I am not aware of any commercial software. Everybody has something to say about standard text formats. Here is my opinion: Why is everybody in favor of some wordprocessor nobody else likes? People work with the thing they like best. As long as we continue behaving like this why should the software builders bother about standards? Why should we? I've tried it on a Mac+ with a SCSI disk, on an SE-FDHD (brand new) with an internal hard drive, and on an SE/30 also with an internal hard drive to no avail. All I get is strange messages such as "Memory is running low", "Printing Error -108", sometimes bombs ID=02 or 00, and I even got this: "Sorry, I've run out of memory; I need 858993480 bytes more"!!! Do I need virtual memory to use it ? :-) All the Macs have at least 2.5 megs (some have 5), and the ones with 2.5 are all running single Finder. What's funny about this is the fact that it works very well on a Mac II, under MultiFinder (in a 1 Meg partition). I've tried System 6.0.2 and 6.0.3 with the same results. I also tried to increase the heap space (128K above normal). I'm running version 1.01f of Textures, and System 6.0.2 on the Mac II (which works) and the Mac+ (which doesn't work); all Mac SEs (that don't run) are running 6.0.3. I get these error messages right after it shows the dialog telling me:abo "Looking for LaserWriter Laser II Profs". I then hear a lot of bells,ag then the laserwriter dialog box gets filled with junk and then the funnydialog messages. I don't know if it can make a difference, but the laser printer is a LaserWriter IINT. The output will be 8.5" x 11" sheets. The page layout should be completely flexible as to number of staffs and size. The following excerpt from the documentation explains what it is: WhereSIT is an application which functions similarly to a file finder (for example Find File, by David Goldsmith, distributed with the Apple System disks). It searches for a StuffIt archive in the specified directory and scans it for a search key name. It lists all files within an archive which it finds that contain the key word in their names, and allows you to view different information about the file. You can also move the file to the desktop for further manipulation. When this is done, the file can be returned to itUs original directory by the FinderUs Put Away command.
