Subject: "Focus Line" in Sony monitors

The people who informed you about the tiny dim line in your monitor
were both right and wrong. They were right in saying that all sony
monitors have it. (look at the ones in the dealer showroom). I think
they were wrong in calling it a "focus line." My understanding is
that the line on the screen is a shadow thrown by a tiny wire used to
hold an internal CRT part in place. All of Apple's Hires RGB
Monitors show this behavior. If you really don't like it, you have to
buy a different monitor.

The following was posted to our local Macintosh list some time ago:

*****
To reach a CompuServe subscriber account of the form
    7xxxx,yyy
swap the `,' for `.' and add @compuserve.com:
    7xxxx.yyy@compuserve.com
This is necessary for RFC compliance. To reach employees of
CompuServe, they have somewhat more typical usernames inside the
csi.compuserve.com subdomain.

CompuServe subscribers can reach people Out Here from CompuServe's
mailers via the specification:
    >internet:user@host.domain
The use of ">stuff:" is CompuServe's general gateway-access syntax; it
does not appear in anything on the Internet side of the gateway, but
rather RFC-compliant headers are generated.

Internet nameservers for compuserve.com are alive and responding, and
pathalias data for a (fictitious) host "compuserve" has been published
since last fall. Internet mailers must support MX records in order to
reach CompuServe. The MX host is saqqara.cis.ohio-state.edu, a.k.a.
osu-cis. I understand that there is some magic that must be performed
on BITNET VM hosts in order to get there due to lack of MX support;
details from other BITNETters, not me.

    [That's 7xxxx.yyy%compuserve.com@saqqara.cis.ohio-state.edu - Ed.]

Saqqara speaks with CompuServe approximately half-hourly, though this
will probably change as load is observed.

There are NO charges accrued to ANYBODY on either side of the gateway
for its use. CompuServe subscribers are charged their usual hourly
rates, but there is no gateway-specific surcharge.

And a whois lookup from nic.ddn.mil gives one:

As far as I know, GEnie can't be reached from Bitnet. However,
Compu$erve can be reached by sending the mail to userid@compuserve.com,
with the , replaced by a . in the userid. For example, I can be reached

MCI mail can be reached similarly, although I don't recall whether
it's userid@mci.com or userid@mcimail.com.

Subject: Disinfectant 1.3

Disinfectant 1.3 Announcement
=============================

November 29, 1989

Disinfectant 1.3 is a new release of the free Macintosh virus
detection and repair utility.

Version 1.3 recognizes the new "Jude" virus recently discovered
at several universities in Switzerland. "Jude" is yet another
simple clone of the nVIR B virus. The name was changed from "nVIR"
to "Jude," but otherwise the two viruses are identical.

Version 1.3 also deals with an important conflict between the
Scores virus and Apple's system software 6.0.4 release. When
Scores infects a 6.0.4 System file, it damages it in such a way
that it cannot be repaired properly. When Disinfectant repairs
such a System file, it deletes all traces of the virus, but the System
file is still damaged and should not be used. Version 1.3 has a
special check for this situation and issues an error message informing
the user of the problem. (Symantec's SAM Virus Clinic 1.10 and HJC's
Virex 2.12 have the same problem as Disinfectant 1.2 - they leave
the System file damaged, and they do not issue any warning or error
messages).

People who have experienced Scores infections on 6.0.4 systems should
be aware of this problem. They should replace their System file by
a clean copy from an original Apple release disk, and then reinstall
their fonts and desk accessories.

Version 1.3 also fixes incompatibilites between Disinfectant and
the Flex screen saver and the DaynaFile product.

We recommend that all users upgrade to the new version 1.3.

Internet users can obtain Disinfectant 1.3 via anonymous FTP from site
acns.nwu.edu (129.105.49.1). It will also be available soon from most
good user groups, bulletin boards, CompuServe, Genie, and other
commercial online services, and Internet archive sites.

The clone problem is serious. We are working on a new version of
Disinfectant (version 2.0) which will automatically detect and
repair simple clones like the many nVIR B clones that have
appeared (Hpat, AIDS, MEV#, nFLU, and Jude). The new version
should even be able to handle cases of multiple virus infections
involving mixtures of clones and known viruses. In the future we
will not have to release a new version for each new clone.

We have tested several other virus fighting tools against the new
Jude virus, with the following interesting results:

Apple's Virus Rx 1.5 and Jeff Shulman's Virus Detective 3.1 both
properly detect the virus, but they are not able to repair infected
files. (Virus Rx and Virus Detective are detection-only tools, and
they both have excellent clone detection capabilities. They do not
attempt to repair infected files).

CE Software's Vaccine 1.0.1 properly blocks attempts by Jude to infect
a clean system. The system bombs or hangs when the attack is
attempted, and the system is not infected.

Chris Johnson's GateKeeper 1.1.1 partially blocks attempts by Jude
to infect a clean system. The system file is partially infected,
but not contagious.

Symantec's SAM Virus Clinic 1.10 does not properly detect or repair
infected files.

Symantec's SAM Intercept 1.10 detects attempts by Jude to infect a
clean system in standard, advanced, and custom protection modes, but
not in basic protection mode. The auto-floppy scan option does
not detect infected files.

HJC's Virex 2.12 does not properly detect or repair infected
application files. It issues a warning message for infected system
files, and partially repairs them. The resulting repaired system
file is partially infected, but not contagious.

HJC's Virex INIT 1.12 properly detects attempts by Jude to infect
a clean system. The auto-floppy scan option properly detects
infected files.

I installed the appleshare workstation files with ethertalk on the system
on the hard disk on the Mac IIx. However, because our system administration

else that I need to do/tell appleshare to make it work correctly.

I don't know if it's a bug or not, but I can't seem to access the
color libraries from FreeHand 2.02 (nor from 1.0 for that matter) on my
SE/30. When I go to the Colors... command from the Color menu and click
on the Library button, nothing happens. It's supposed to give me a dialog
box to find the color libraries, but nothing happens.

I'm running 6.0.3 and 5 megs. I thought it might be some INITs that I have,
but I ran after booting from an original floppy system that came with the
machine. I know it's not the 68030 because it works fine on a IIcx. Is it
possible that it won't let me access them because I don't have a color monitor?
One other thing, when I ran it off my hard disk after booting off of the
floppy, it switched to my system. (I could tell because the background pattern
changed on the desktop.) Anybody experience the same problem? If someone has
an SE/30 and FreeHand, could they try selecting the Library button and tell
me the results? Thanks.

Large hard disks:

I bought a Rodime 140-Plus just about a year ago. I don't know the technical
specs on it; at the time it was the cheapest/megabyte, and I wanted lots
of megs (I had just my internal 20SC at the time).  It's relatively quiet;
there's a slight ticking noise when it accesses the disk. Its fan is much
quieter than the SE's; I can't hear it with the SE going (and with the stereo
turned up to 11 :-). It formats to ~138,900K

A year ago the Rodime 140-Plus went for $1200. You can probably get it much
cheaper now.

Subject: Mac+ to modem cable results

I spent a few hours today updating and cleaning up that Mac serial connection
document. I have a Mac-knowlegable MIT EE reading through it for lies, and
will post here when we are happy with it (we'll let our friendly neighborhood
moderator decide whether to post it in its entirety or put it up at aim with
a pointer here).

I've taken yet another look at the cable matthew posted, and I can only
interpret needing that additional jumper in terms of a known problem with
old terminal programs not doing the right things to bring up HSKo/DTR on
post 128/512 hardware. PLEASE disconnect HSKo (pin 1 at the mini-DIN) if
you are going to drive DTR/HSKi with DSR.

The known problem is discussed in the document, but in order to explain why
the additional jumper could make it work one needs to assume that an old
terminal program on the Mac plus has HSKo down (unasserted) and the modem
needs to see DTR asserted and that DSR wins when fighting with HSKo. This
is not a good permanent solution.

Subject: Molecular Modeling Summary

Greetings--
A while ago, in info-mac terms, I inquired about
molecular modeling for the Mac. Boy did I open a can of worms. Okay
I only got 16 replies, but they were good ones. Here's a summary:

These packages can run from free demo-ware to over $1000, and I mean
well over $1000 in one case. See if you can guess. I won't price
specific programs, because Info-mac should be non-commercial; I
included this pricing as a guide to the unknowing and unwary.
These are in roughly alphabetical order---

Alchemy, Tripos Associates, St. Louis MO
Was mentioned by three respondees. Can save as PICT file.
Those expressing opinoin liked it, though a little "unmaclike."

Ball and Stick, Norbert Mueller, K360171@AEARN.BITNET
Several people mentioned this one, including the author.
There is a demo in the info-mac archives at MACSERVE@PUCC or
LISTSERV@RICE. Try get info-mac/demo/ball-and-stick-part1.hqx and
info-mac/demo/ball-and-stick-part2.hqx. There are versions for the
512KE up to the SE and another version for 68020/030 machines i.e.
Mac II's. The program supports multifinder, color, A/UX. Send a note
to Norbert Mueller at the above bitnet adress for a more informative
summary of features. Nine respondents mentioned Ball and Stick.

Chem 3D/ ChemDraw, Cambridge Scientific Computing
ChemDraw is "industry standard" so I'm told. Chem 3D is a 3D
extension of Chemdraw. It reads Chemdraw files. Someone mentioned
that a demo version was available, but I'm not sure. For more info try

Cache Worksystem, Tektronix, inc.
For the MacIIx of IIcx: You get an accelerator, trackball, 16
in color monitor, 3d stereo graphics card, graphics software,
molecular editor software, assembly test and installation. This turns
your Mac into a stereo molecular modeler. See Nature, vol 341, 5 Oct
1989, p 468 for a product review and more info.

MacMimic, Anders Sundin, Author
I got a note about this from the author. It is apparently in
beta and will be ready in early 1990. It is for a MacII with 256
color monitor. Displays in stick or ball and stick format. Rotation
in real time on smaller molecules. Other features. For more info

PC Model Serena Software, Bloomington,IN aka Kevin Gilbert
This is a version of PC model for the MAcintosh. I didn't get
a whoe lot of info about it, but it sounds like a decent program.
Contact Serena Software for info. Someone mentioned that Serena
software is located at Indiana U in Bloomington.

NITRO, Tripos Associates, St louis MO
Uses Mac as a front end for Nitro running on VAX/UNIX system.
Probably more powerful running on the big system. Contact Tripos for
more info.

MolDraw.
Mentioned by someone, but little was said. Apparently a port
>From MS?DOS.

Finally, I got a note from Tom Ngo, who wrote his own program, and
would like info on marketability and features wanted. Tom, I hope you
see this, to get an idea. To contact him:

that someone suspects 6.04 of causing problems and has solved them by
switching back to 6.03. Now I'm really confused. Has anybody got any
authoritative information about which system is the best at present?

I'm looking for something that will produce W-2s, 1099s, etc.

I assume that such a beast could be anything from a template for
a commercially available spreadsheet to a standalone PD program.

I would look into the programs available from Softview. I have been a
satisfied user of MacInTax for several years. It lets you fill out
taxes by entering only the input information. Anything that is computed
it does. When you are done, you can print out the results on an
ImageWriter or laser printer (I use the one from GCC Technologies). You
can either send a blank tax form through the printer and have the
program print just the numbers (not recommended), or have the program
print the entire form (the best way). The output from MacInTax has been
approved for submission to the IRS. MacInTax comes with 79 forms,
schedules, worksheets, and statements. SoftView also offers separate
programs for state returns (8 differents states), a professional
version of MaxInTax, and a program for electronically filing your tax
return (I believe the IRS restricts this to option to tax preparers).
SoftView can be reached at 800-622-6829.

    Any and all info appreciated.

Subject: Teflon mouse feet for Mac+ mouse

A couple of years ago, I bought a set of four small Teflon "feet" for
my Mac+ mouse. I believe the product was called MouseEase, and it was
manufactured by a company in California called Tacklind Design. Recently
I tried to order another set of these, and Tackind informed me that they
were no longer making Macintosh products. My question is, does anyone
out there know where I can get these mouse feet? Thanx in advance...

Subject: VideoTape Control Toolkit

I recently received the new APDAlog. One item caught my fancy, it's the
VidClip Video Tape Control Toolkit for HyperCard by Video Production
Controls (what a mouthful!). Does anyone have experience/specifics on
said item? In particular, will it work as a software-only single-frame
controller to allow recording of frame-at-a-time animation? Which VCR
models does it support?
Thanx in advanx.
