We have recently upgraded our Macs (SE and II) to 2.5 and 8 MB, we have now 1.5

Subject: Amiga Mac Emulator reviewed

At general request: Some hands-on remarks on A-Max :-)

First of all I own a Mac Plus and an Amiga 500 so I think that I am in a
good position to evaluate A-Max.

The mac emulator uses the Mac Plus 128k ROMs but only emulates a Mac 512Ke
and I haven't been able to get a system working higher than System 4,
(System 5 and System 6 -I even tried System 6.0.3 just won't boot)
and System 4 is no longer supported by Apple. However Finder 6.0 seems to
work fine in conjunction with System 4.

There is no standard Hard Disk support (I know there are interfaces that
will solve this problem but at extra cost) so you better have more than
1 meg RAM. You can initialize a RAM disk by pressing F1 and copy all
system files into it. This speeds up the system considerably. The RAM
disk is permanent, ever after A-Max reboot. The RAM disk is not HFS,
however this is no problem.

The Mac's PRAM is not supported (Permanent RAM, contains information
about the system like mouse speed,...) however, the Amiga clock is supported.
A1000 owners still have to set the clock manually.

Graphics are considerably faster than a standard Mac Plus or SE. This
is especially noticable in action games. Unlike the Mac Plus, mousemovement
does not slow down while inserting a disk (Nice patch :-)). Effective
CPU speed is approx. 10% slower due to clockspeed. Both effects probable
even out in average use.

Remark: Somebody said MacWrite works twice as fast on A-Max but
he probably used a RAM disk or a large Cache memory. MacWrite
keeps temporary files in the system folder.

Mac Sound is not supported except for a dull beep.

I've put my Mac besides my Amiga and connected them using a nullmodem.
Transferring at 19200 baud using Macbinary to RAM disk works fast, without
any trouble. Transferring via ntermediate disk formats is too
clumsy and complicated for my taste. Atari emulators do drive things
much better.

Screen: You can choose between interlace 640 x 512 or non-interlace
with screenscrolling. Both solutions are unsatisfactory because
interlace is very bad for displaying a Macscreen due to its
very fine lines and screenscrolling is a bit weird. (Note: ECS de
mode and A2024 are also supported)

        - ECS mode
        - A2024
        - Interlaced - 640 x 512
                       - 512 x 342
        - Non Interlaced (640 x 512 or 512 x 342)
                  - Paged
                  - Fast scrolling
                  - Smooth scrolling

Memory: Mac software has problems using non continuously allocated
memory so on a 1Mb Amiga you can only run a 512Kb Mac. Fast
RAM is still useable as RAM disk. These days, 512Kb is not
enough for the better Mac programs.

Finder: Heavily patched.
Formatting: naming a disk happens after formatting instead
                    of before.
Disk To Disk copy: Replaced by filecopy.
        Command-Option-key combinations don't work. (E.g. CMD-OPT-E)
Restart crashes (this is mentioned in the documentation)
        MultiFinder works fine.

SoftWare: HyperCard is supposed to work but I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO
GET IT GOING YET. Tested on a 1Mb and a 2.5Mb system.
Too bad because HyperCard is a very important program
on a Mac today. MS Word, WordPerfect and other popular
          software seem to run fine.

Programming: There is no substitute for the RESET or INTERRUPT
buttons. This makes programming very difficult if
not impossible (MacsBug = Forget It)

General conclusion: A-Max is very good for a first release however
there are still bugs to be corrected and improvements to be made.
I guess A-Max will be used by people who have a Mac at work and
an Amiga at home or by the interested hobbyist. Interlace is
and continuous to be a very big obstacle to use A-Max for longer
periods of time and professional use.

Is there a way in HyperCard to mount an AppleShare volume transparently
without having any user intervention (via the Chooser or anything else)?

What I want to do is when a user to clicks on a button, for HyperCard to
mount an AppleShare volume (as Guest), and then go to a stack on that
volume.

Is this do-able?

First: Congratulations! You will enjoy it, I'm sure. Do expect a
"getting-used-to" period. Things work differently and not always as one
might be used to. Here is a suggested "hot" but not overly high-end
system. After that, I'll show a low-end and a high-end system. I'll
show suggested retail prices. Normal "street prices" are generally up
to 40% off the retail, with higher educational discounts counting for
even more.

 M5660 Mac IIcx . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $4669.00
 M0404 Apple Macintosh Portrait Display . . . . . . $1099.00
 M0119 Macintosh II Portrait Display Video Card . . $ 599.00
 M0115 Apple Extended Keyboard . . . . . . . . . . $ 229.00
 ----------------------------------------------------- --------
          Total Apple hardware . . . . . . . . . . . . $6596.00

          4 MB RAM from 3rd party vendor . . . . . . . $ 360.00
          80 MB Disk from 3rd party vendor . . . . . . $ 650.00
 ----------------------------------------------------- --------
          Total Mac IIcx . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $7606.00

          possible "street price" . . . . . . . . . . $5300.00

You didn't mention software but I'll stick my neck out and make a few
suggestions. You should know that most of the major publishers offer
academic versions which are identical to retail versions with the
exception of some of the extra support documentation at GREATLY reduced
prices. Pursue these. I know all the Microsoft and Claris products are
available from student bookstores at academic prices. Not to start any
wars, but some favorites are:

  word processing . . . . . . . . . . Microsoft Word
  spreadsheet . . . . . . . . . . . . Microsoft Excel
  telecommunications . . . . . . . . Software Ventures: MicroPhone II
  drawing . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Claris: MacDraw II
  color paint . . . . . . . . . . . . Electronic Arts: Studio/8
desktop publishing (easiest) . . . Aldous: PageMaker
desktop publishing (best features) Quark: XPress
  disk recovery . . . . . . . . . . . Symantic: S.U.M.
  disk backup . . . . . . . . . . . . Microseeds: Redux or SuperMac: DiskFit
  virus detection (free) . . . . . . John Norstad: Disinfectant
  virus prevention (free) . . . . . . Chris Johnson: Gatekeeper

There are, I'm sure, people who will dispute this, but Word Perfect for
the Mac is a dog. It's slow and, to me, has a clumsy user interface.
Maybe it's because I'm used to Word (which has its own unique interpre-
tations of the Mac user interface). If WordPerfect made it easier to
keep files compatible between Mac and PC versions (it can be done, it's
just clumsy) it would be worth more, just for that.

Now, the low-end Mac:

 M5880 Macintosh Plus . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $1799.00
          Third party external 40MB hard disk . . . . . $ 525.00
 ------------------------------------------------------- --------
          Total low-end Mac . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $2324.00

Disadvantages: slow, small screen, unreliable power supply, very
   unergonomic keyboard.

A low, high-end Mac:

same as the suggested system above except:

 M0400 Apple High-Resolution Monochrome Monitor . . . $ 399.00
minus cost of portrait display . . .-1099.00
 M0504 Mac II 1-bit video card . . . . . . . . . . . $ 199.00
          minus cost of portrait card . . . .- 599.00
          40 MB Hard Disk . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $ 475.00
          minus cost of 80 MB drive . . . . .- 650.00
 ------------------------------------------------------- --------
          Total low-end Mac II . . . . . . . . . . . . . $6331.00

Disadvantages: smaller screen (same as PC), smaller drive.

The high-end Mac:

same as the suggested system above except:

 M0402 Apple Two-Page Monochrome Monitor . . . . . . $2149.00
minus cost of portrait display -1099.00
 M0260 Mac II Two-Page Monochrome Video Card . . . . same cost
          additional 4 MB RAM . . . . . . . . . . . . . $ 360.00
 ------------------------------------------------------- --------
          Total high-end Mac . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $9016.00

Advantages: bigger display, more memory to run more programs under
   MultiFinder.

A color system using Apple's M0401 color monitor and M0324 display card
is about $50 less than the Portrait Display combo: smaller screen, but
color. Higher end systems with faster CPUs, 32-bit color, larger hard
drives are not consistent with your intended uses.

There! A lot of words!

Subject: ImageWriter, ATM, & Word 4.0

Many people have been asking about the patch for Microsoft Word to
enable fractional widths for printing to the ImageWriter when using
ATM. The following patch will enable fractional widths. Use at your
own risk, as always.

(Originally from Compu$erve)

Here's the patch to make MS Word 4.0 use Fractional Widths on an Imagewriter:

* Use FEDIT to open the resource fork of MS Word, or use ResEdit to open the
resource PCOD 0.

* Search for the string 0C6C 0001 370C 6722 302E 0014 4EAC. This string occurs
at about EFDA hex in PCOD 0.

* Change the 6722 to a 4E71.

What does this do? Changing the 6722 (BEQ.S *+22) to 4E71 (NOP) eliminates the
branch in the MS Word code that skips the Fractional Width feature if the
device is an Imagewriter.

Now, choose Commands from the Edit menu, and use the dialog to add the
Fractional Widths command to the File menu. Then check off Fractional Widths.
Ta-Da.

I don't work for Microsoft, and this patch is for your private use at your own
risk.

Accckkkkk!!!!

The "current" version is 1.0b8 and THAT's 4 months old. Frederic
is working on a "release" version but is somewhat less than enthusiastic
now that Apple has decided they don't want his code. The newer version
works with the release version of ResEdit 1.2, 32-bit QuickDraw, and
System 6.0.3 or greater. It is much more robust than earlier versions
though some of the editor still cause fairly catastrophic crashes.

In this newer version he has broken out all the common color editing
code into CPAK resources, with individual pickers and editors using
very little code. It supports cicn, icl4, icl8, crsc, and probably
something else I've left out. the icl8 format is what will probably
be used by System 7.0 to show color icons in the finder. They are much
smaller than cicn's because they use the system pallet and they use
the ICN#'s b&w icon and mask.

I hesitate to upload 1.0b8 because of the (probably) imminant release
of ver 1.0. I'll talk with Frederic and see how he's doing. He should
be back in France now after yatttus (yet another trip to the U. S.).

Subject: ScreenSnap 2.2 Screen Capture utility update

Knowledge Source, Inc. announces the release of a new version of
ScreenSnap(TM) 2.2, our screen capture utility.

ScreenSnap 2.2 is a shareware application that lets you take a snapshot of
any rectangular portion of the Macintosh screen and save it in a window for
later use. Once created, the snapshot can be inverted, moved, saved as a
PICT file, copied to the Clipboard (and pasted into applications such as
HyperCard(R), MacDraw(R), or WriteNow(R)), printed, or just left hanging
around on-screen for reference. Because ScreenSnap uses PICT format for
its files, it can read the output of most drawing programs, and be used as
a PICT file viewer. ScreenSnap handles color, multiple monitors (including
snapping across monitors), and multiple screensnaps.

ScreenSnap is useful in many situations. For example:
 - When reading electronic mail, an important message can be snapped for
   later reference.
 - When running a program, important results can be snapped and printed
   instantly.
 - When programming, screen output can be snapped and saved for later
reference, for user interface mock-up, or for pasting into a document.

The previous version of ScreenSnap was called Snap 2.1. (We changed the
name for distinctiveness.). New functionality in ScreenSnap 2.2 includes:

 - an expanded, scrolling Help screen, with an added button to print it,
 - the ability to set the default screensnap size,
 - a "splash" screen that automatically closes when the program
initialization is completed, so the user does not need to dismiss it,
 - improved memory management (safer and more efficient),
 - speed improvements, and
 - response to the 'help' key on the extended keyboard.

It's also cheaper. We're asking for $11 shareware fee, versus the $17
we asked for Snap 2.1. Registered owners should have received the
version 2.2 plus a rebate by now.

or something like that. This returns me to the Finder, but *without* the
menu bar (I was using a stack which had hidden the menu bar).

Even restarting HyperCard did not help me to get the menu bar back, the
only escape was to hit the reset button.

Subject: SYSTEM FOLDER PROTECTION

WE HAVE AN OPEN ACCESS STUDENT MACINTOSH LAB ON OUR CAMPUS. WE HAVE
BEEN RUNNING WITHOUT A NETWORK AND THE MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS ARE A
HEADACHE. STUDENTS LIKE TO PLAY AND INDIVIDUALIZE THE MACHINE.
THEY ARE NO DIFFERENT THEN ANY OTHER MAC USER. NEXT SEMESTER, WE
ARE GOING TO NETWORK THE LAB.

WE WOULD LIKE TO ALLEVIATE AS MUCH SYSTEM MAINTENANCE AS
POSSIBLE. AS THE SYSTEM FOLDER MUST BE ON EACH MACHINE, WE
ARE LOOKIN FOR WAYS TO PREVENT STUDENTS FROM TRASHING FILES,
ADDING THEIR OWN FILES TO THE SYSTEM, CHANGING CONTROL PANEL
CONFIGURATION, AND OPENING THE SYSTEM FOLDER. WHEN PROGRAM
DEFAULTS ARE SET (LIKE SUPERPAINT), WE WOULD LIKE TO PREVENT
CHANGES TO THE DEFAULTS. IN A NUTSHELL, WE WOULD LIKE TO
PREVENT ANY CHANGES TO THE SYSTEM.

WE HAVE BEEN USING MACTOOLS TO CHANGE FILE ATTRIBUTES
BUT THAT IS A STOPGAP SOLUTION AT BEST. REMOVING THE CONTROL
PANEL FROM THE DA'S WORKS BUT MAKES IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR US.

IN SHORT, DOES ANYBODY KNOW OF ANY SOFTWARE SOLUTION FOR
LOCKING THE SYSTEM FOLDER (PASSWORD?) THAT WOULD ALLOW THE
SYSTEM TO FUNCTION PROPERLY, BOOT FROM THE HARD DRIVE, AND
DENY UNAUTHORIZED USERS ANY SORT OF ACCESS.

I WILL SUMMARIZE RESPONSES FOR THE NET.

  THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Subject: TN3270 (FTP *from* the Mac)

Folks,

Someone mentioned recently that BYU distributes a version of TN3270 that
has been patched to allow the Mac to initiate FTP transfers. I immediately
tried to FTP same from BYU, I did a grep of /etc/hosts looking for BYU, found
three and checked them out. None seemed to have what I was looking for. Could
someone give me more specific instructions as to *how* BYU distributes this?
(If I do get it via FTP, what host? [Directory?])

Subject: Troubles with Easy Envelopes+ 1.4c & DeskWriter

Easy Envelopes+ 1.4c does not seem to work with the DeskWriter, at
least if you do not have ATM. Here are my symptoms:

    * With version 1.3c, I used to get a system error every time I
clicked "OK" in the Print dialog box.

    * Now, with version 1.4c, whenever I click "OK" in the Print
dialog box, EE+ has displayed its "now printing envelope" box,
then quit without printing anything. This happens with and
without "High quality printer fonts" and "font substitution"
      clicked.

I am told that EE+ runs fine with ATM. If so, shouldn't it run
equally well with plain old bitmapped fonts?

P.S. Norm Gall, thanks for sending me EE+ 1.4c!

Subject: Typesetting conversions - HELP!

Greeting,

We have many text files which contain the text of a book with formatting codes
>From a Penta typesetting system. We are interested in converting these files
to either: MSWord 4.0, MSWord 3.0 or RTF format. Due to the large number of
files which need conversion we can't simply use search and replace to change
the codes. We are considering writing a program to do the conversion, but want
to make sure we would not be reinventing the wheel.

Do you know of an existing program (commercial or otherwise) that exists for
this purpose?

Please respond directly and I will summarize to the Net.

Thanks in advance,
