We want to network them together and have a common database. The options seem to be Fourth Dimension and Double Helix on one side and an SQL, like Oracle, on the other. The downside to Oracel is that we need to have a mini or main frame as server, I think. I am sure I am not the first person to have to deal with this problem. What I would like to ask for the following advice: if you had 20 Macs and could spend up to $1000 per what would you do for a database program, networking stuff and server (of course the server is extra). Thanks. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Dec 89 08:53 CDT From: PKRAMER@crcvms.unl.edu Subject: A CGM file translator? Are there any applications for the Mac that can convert or translate a CGM file into a PICT or TIFF file? A CGM file is a Computer Graphics Metafile. They are usually produced by graphics packages running on mainframes. For example, DI-3000 and NCAR graphics can produce them. I would like to be able to take a CGM file that I have produced on a mainframe and move it into an application like MacDraw II. These same mainframe packages can produce postscript files but I am not aware of a package that can translate a postscript file into a DRAW or PICT file. In any case, I would appreciate any comments or suggestions on this topic. I've already placed autoCruise into my neighbor's mac as a joke, and I thought the autoWrap init, in conjunction with autoCruise would be slightly better. Currently the only scheme is for me to drag certain folders off onto the backup volume with the Finder. If you have ever had to do this with 5000 files, you know why it is a pain! I have looked into commercial software to do this, and all that I have found or heard of falls short in one respect or another. Let me describe the features we are looking for, and hopefully someone out there can give us a hand. We would like to do incremental backup of a partial set of the file server. We do not want to backup applications, and we only want to backup files in certain folders. Obviously it needs to be compatible with the network (EtherTalk) and it would be really nice if it could run on the same machine as the server and work on a timer in the background. If anyone has any info I would appreciate what mail you could send my way. If there is sufficient response I will post a summery. Thanks in advance for everything. It adds no new features, but corrects several bugs as excerpted from the documentation. Change from 2.0B8 to 2.0B9 This is a bug-fix upgrade and no new feature. The following known problems have been fixed. 1) In the Configure Dialog, RPermanentS and RSearch All OffspringS button behave strangely. 2) Sometimes, ROpen FileS after the file selection from the menu just selects the file, and does not open. 3) Sometimes in some applications, CR is inserted after a file is opened by ROpen FileS. 4) When the Boomerang popup menu overlaps with the applications dialog item, the dialog cannot be accessed, or something strange (disk eject etc) happens. 5) In some applications, e.g., VirusRx, the dialog does not work. 6) Occatioanl corruption of Prefs files. 7) Bug in the RPurge Folder (File) at StartupS option in the Preference Dialog. Each sound is a short digitized piece from a popular Christmas song from the 30's, 40's or 50's. The 13 sound resources are not named meaningfully, however, so you have to figure out what is being sung and what song it came from (and who is singing it). A 'Dont read me file' is included which list the sounds and where they came from. These sounds can be listened to using most sound editing programs. To make them available as your System Beep, you may have to use ResEdit to paste them in your system file. I recommend using the BeepShuffle INIT along with these sounds. This INIT randomly selects one beep each time, so you won't get tired of these sounds so quickly. NOTE: I accidentally put an apostrophe ['] and exclamation marks in the Dont Read Me file name, so some systems may choke on this. If you transfer the Stuff-It file and unstuff on the Mac, everything should go smoothly. Keith instone@andy.bgsu.edu "...and to all a good night." PS If you want New Year's Eve sounds, use MacPuke! I have been a very satisfied user of Suitcase II and, lately, of FastBack II. When Fifth Generation offered me DiskLock I was happy to acquire such a seemingly nice security package. I installed Disklock on the 80 Mb hard disk in my Mac IIcx. Everything was fine until I tried to print a Word document on the HP DeskWriter. The appropriate dialog boxes appeared and then the screen froze up and I had to reboot. I could only print after I removed DiskLock and disabled the DiskLock init. This "hanging" of the computer and not being able to print happened not only with Word 4.0 but with several other applications, all of which printed fine once DiskLock was disabled. (It is not a question of low memory - I have 8 Mb of RAM). I informed Fifth Generation of this incompatibility on November 10, 1989. I have yet to hear back from them. I wonder if any one else has had this experience. I also would like to know why Fifth Generation takes so long in replying. I found out long ago that Postscript files are not true ASCII files, since they use 8-bit character representation. The eighth bit is set whenever a character is generated using the "option" key. If you transfer Mac Postscript files to another machine using a file transfer which doesn't include all 8 bits, you will find that the "option" characters are translated into their "un-option" counterparts. I learned how to deal with this problem by using the right file transfer protocol. However, I now have a new problem. We have a LaserWriter IINT connected to a Sun which refuses to print the option characters. Somewhere along the line, the 8th bit is being chopped. Now, I know that the 8th bit really does exist in the Postscript files which reside on the Sun, since I can ftp them to another machine where they print fine. So the question is, where am I losing the 8th bit? Could it be in the "lpr" command? Does it require an option? Or could the problem be in some DIP switch on the LaserWriter? These machines are not under my personal control, so I can't do much experimenting with them; also, I don't know anything about Unix. I'm only hoping that someone has had experience dealing with this problem and can set me straight. Even any ideas for experiments would be helpful. Here is a summary of what I was told, and found out for myself: 1. SIMMs are cheap now, and getting cheaper. I paid $79/meg to the Chip Merchant, in San Diego. Most responders suggested going through the ads in the back of MacWeek, calling all the 800 numbers listed for SIMMs, and going for the cheapest one. Sounds good to me. The people on the phone at Chip Merchant weren't at all helpful, but after a bunch of discussion I found out that the price is lower if you send them a check than if you use a purchase order. 2. Instructions: I found two very helpful sets: TN176, available from the archives (with beautiful MacDraw illustrations in the Stuffit file - really nice!), and MacWorld, May 1988 pp. 144-151. Nice illustrations there, too; guess where they got them?? 3. Tools: Torx screwdrivers are often available at auto parts stores. The size is T-15. Case spreaders aren't necessary if you're careful; use a large screwdriver and gently twist it in the slot between the front and the back, in several places. I just finished doing a Plus and an SE today, and they both worked fine the first time. I borrowed an anti-static mat and wrist-strap from our college computer fixer, but one responder suggest rubbing down the area with "Bounce" fabric-softener sheets. Around here (MD) doing it in the summer would probably suffice...
