Subject: 8 bit character in Mac generated PostScript files

Though LaserWriter driver v. 6.0 does not seem to produce any 8 bit
characters, converting all the option-codes of a document correctly,
there is one place where it does not do so. If you have a document
TITLE with an option-character in it, then the LaserWriter driver does
NOT convert this into ASCII format. And the title reoccur in the
header of the PostScript file generated by the driver.

Mayhem may ensue...

Summary: Do not use non-ASCII characters in titles of documents which
will be printed to disk and then transmitted.

Here is a simple banner program that works with Adobe Type Manager. It doesn't
seem to like to print in Best quality on the Imagewriter and it doesn't print
in color, but what do you want for small shareware fee? Otherwise it prints
great banners of unlimited length with up to three lines in font sizes of 120,
240, & 480 point. It does all the styles and can center the text. It even
prints in the background under Multifinder on an Imagewriter! All in all it
is what a banner program should be and it's all made possible by ATM. Check
it out.

Here is version 1.0 of my ColorPix FKEY. This is the improved version that I
mentioned when I posted the initial version. This version checks for color

in HEX or decimal, and has a button to allow you to get keep getting pixels
without having to re-invoke it.

Please feel free to use this FKEY in academic and research institutions.

Subject: Inside Mac DA

I recently reposted the Inside Mac DA, but somehow managed to include an old
version of the DA itself (1.1 instead of the proper 1.2), so here is a repost
to fix that.

Included is the most recent Inside Mac DA (version 1.2), the most
comprehensive manual (including some additions and corrections I have made)
and its index, a miniature manual for floppy users, and all the tools
necessary to modify the manuals and index yourself. There is even
documentation.

It's pretty simple to use, just toss the files Manual and MMIndex into your
System Folder and use your favorite technique to install the DA. You will be
in business. If you want to use the small manual, rename it to Manual, use
the enclosed index program to build a new MMIndex and toss these in your
System Folder. Modifications to the manuals are handled accordingly. The
Manuals are straight TEXT files.

Share and enjoy...

MacSat is a satellite tracking program. It can store data for up to 200
satellites and 100 stations. Data for the stations and satellites are
contained in a file called 'MacSat Data'. Default data are contained in a
file called 'MacSat Defaults'. Both files must reside in the same directory
as MacSat. Some knowledge of satellite orbits is desired to make good use of
this program. Updates appear every two weeks on compuserve Astroforum in DL3.

Subject: Non-.hqx GIF files. Can Mac's Read them?

Looking around the anonymous FTP logins, I found lots of GIF
files in various archives. However, they're not in .hqx format
so that I can't transfer them to my Mac. I FTP on my school's
VAX, and would like to have these GIF files. Is there anyway
that I can convert them to Mac GIF files? Or is there another
FTP site that has a bunch of GIF files that are already .hqx-ed
	(like sumex-aim)?

You should be able to use them without much trouble. GIF is a binary
format, and you'll need to transfer these files to your Mac carefully
so that you don't mung the binary structure.

Here's an approach which should work:

1) FTP the files to your Vax. Be sure to chant the magic command "binary"
before saying "get" or "mget". This will ensure that the files are
transferred exactly, byte-for-byte. If you don't say "binary", then
FTP may perform carriage-return/newline translation... the results
   would be bad.

2) Transfer the files down to your Mac... once again, in binary. You
can do this with FTP, or with XMODEM, or with ZMODEM, or with
KERMIT. No matter which protocol you use, you should specify a
binary transfer (see the manual page for the downloader you use),
and TURN OFF MACBINARY DECODING at the Mac end! You want to end up
with a simple binary data file.

3) Fire up a file-management utility such as ResEdit, DiskTop, FEdit,
MacSnoop, or something along those lines. Change the type of each file
you've downloaded from whatever it was (TEXT, or zBIN, or something)
to 'GIF ' (I think that's correct... check an existing Mac GIF file).

You should now be able to open and display these files from within Giffer
or a similar GIFreader.

Folks:
The enclosed .hqx file is for Espen Aarseth's PARADIGMA text-filtering

10 days, from what I can tell on the Humanist e-list, and will be useful
for folks interested in doing mass-conversions of ascii or hex strings
in text files. I'm just forwarding Espen's mailing, since I'd not found
the program in the Info-Mac archives (despite ardent searching....:-).
Thanks for posting it as soon as may be!

Paradigma contains the paradigm "Net", which can be used to
purge text files (such as mailing lists) of linefeeds and
unneccessary returns.

The help screen doesn't work on a Mac II

Also, use the "Add" function before quitting, if you want to
keep a useful paradigm, because the program won't ask you to
do so.

Subject: printing non-rectangular clipregions on LaserWriter

Hi again-
I asked a question a few weeks ago about how to print quickDraw pictures
that contain non-rectangular clipRegions on a LaserWriter. In the application
we are developing, we go to great lengths to allow the user to work with
objects that are less than one degree apart around a circle. All the
quickDraw "arc" routines (frameArc, etc.) can only accept integer arguements
which limits drawing with these routines to 1 degree increments. We do this
and call it low resolution mode. Our high resolution mode uses clipRegions
that are shaped like pieces of pie and actually draws whole circles (but only
the part in the clipRegion is visible) to place pieces of the circle on the
screen.
The problem is that Apple chose not to support non-rectangular clipRegions
in its laserWriter drivers. Printing in high resolution works fine on an
ImageWriter or an HP Paintjet, but fails miserabley on the LaserWriter. Do
any of you out there in Macland know of a workaround? It would be most
appreciated since we are stuck and Apple has not answered our question on the
developer technical support.
Lacking such a workaround (the "right" solution), we need to cope with the
existing situation. One way would be to generate our own postScript code, but
that is far beyond the scope of the project (unless it is very simple - is
it?). Another way is to notify the user about the situation. This could be
done by checking to see if the drawing has clipRegions AND is in high
resolution mode AND is printing on a postscript LaserWriter (can this be
done). If so, a dialog box would be displayed explaining the situation and
providing options to (1) print in low resolution mode (default), (2) try high
resolution mode, and (3) cancel. This is the best we have so far come up
with.
Some questions come to mind: What happens with system 7? Will this dialog
become obsolete "real soon now"? Is there a better way to handle the problem?
Is this the right user interface?
Any comments, suggestions, workarounds, etc. would be tremendously
appreciated. BTW the code is in MPW Pascal using MacApp 2.0b9. Thanks in
advance for any help you send our way. Hope everyone has an enjoyable holiday
season.

Subject: Saving Objects in Think's Pascal 2.0

In object-oriented systems, if often necessary to preserve the state of an
object across multiple uses, this is known as persistence. Persistence is
achieved in a number of ways, sometimes with an object-oriented database,
sometimes with a simple file. Instance is a Pascal unit for persevering the
state of an object in a Think's Pascal 2.0 program. The file used is a
standard resource file that is stored in a folder within the current system
folder. The default folder name is Preference and the default file name is
the application name with a suffix of " Pref". The stored state should be
retrieved during the initialization procedure of the type and written back
during the "Free" procedure. A sample initialization procedure follows. Each
stored instance has a version number that is set by the application when
it is written out and returned when it is written. This may be used to control
changing structure within the type.

This has been tested with Think's Pascal and understands the object format used
by that compiler. It may be adapted to work with other compilers with small (?)
effort. This is FREE.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SYMANTEC'S SAM* PROTECTS AGAINST NEW MACINTOSH VIRUSES

CUPERTINO, CA -- December 7, 1989 -- Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ:
SYMC) today announced an update for its Symantec AntiVirus for Macintosh
(SAM) software package. SAM Version 1.3 recognizes, protects against
and eliminates the Macintosh viruses, WDEF and Jude.

"In addition to protecting against the WDEF virus, SAM Version 1.3
incorporates the features of SAM Version 1.2 as announced on Friday,
December 1," said Tom Byers, executive vice president. "Due to our
quick turnaround with SAM Version 1.3, our shipments of SAM Version 1.2
scheduled for this week will not be shipped. To provide our customers
with the most current protection available, all shipments will be
replaced with SAM Version 1.3."

The WDEF virus, which was discovered in Belgium, infects the Macintosh
Desktop file in a manner which is unlike any other Macintosh virus. The
WDEF virus copies itself from disk to disk via the Desktop file. While
this activity does not normally cause problems, the WDEF virus could
potentially cause disk crashes. Unlike other Macintosh viruses, users
do not have to run an application for the WDEF virus to spread.

SAM Version 1.3 will prevent against any virus using the same techniques
as WDEF to attempt to unpatch viral protection.

The Jude virus is a clone of the common nVIR B virus. The name was
changed from nVIR to Jude, but otherwise the two viruses are identical.

SAM Version 1.3 will be available December 13, 1989. Subscribers to
Symantec's Update Subscription Service for SAM will automatically
receive SAM Version 1.3 free of charge. Customers who purchase SAM
Version 1.1 after November 30, 1989 and return their registration card
and dated sales receipt to Symantec will also receive Version 1.3 free
of charge.

All registered SAM users will receive a Version 1.3 update announcement
>From Symantec. Customers who purchased SAM Version 1.1 prior to
November 30, 1989 can also order the update for $15.00 (plus shipping
and sales tax) through Symantec's Customer Service department
(800-441-7234 outside CA; 800-626-8847 inside CA).

Symantec is a leading software company which provides award-winning
application and system software products for IBM PC and Apple Macintosh
computer users. Founded in 1982, Symantec is a public company traded on
the NASDAQ National Market System (SYMC). The company is based in

Subject: Word 4.0 Glossaries

I use the Formula Glossary in MS Word 4.0 quite freqently and it is rather
a pain to keep accessing the Formula Glossary every time I get into Word.
I have searched the manual and cannot locate how to attatch the Formula
Glossary so that when I boot Word it will access the Formula Glossary instead
of the Standard Glossary. Any help will be appreciated. Seasons Greetings!

Greg
