Carter" <DUSCARTE@idbsu.idbsu.edu> Subject: AppleShare Server and Network Bridge Greetings, We have recently been gifted with an SE/30 with 4M/80M to use as a file server in our lab. What I want to do is run AppleShare File Service, AppleShare Print Service, and run the AppleTalk Internet Router to connect our LocalTalk network here in the lab to the Ethernet running through the building (and out to the Internet). We have 3-Com EtherLink cards in other machines and are looking into getting an SE/30 model. Questions: Does anyone know for sure if this will work? Does anyone know for sure that this will not work? Does anyone have any comments or thoughts they'd like to pass on to me? Would anyone like a mint? Thanks for any information. If responders would mail information to me directly, I will summarize it for the net as well as give a progress report when/if we get this working (we have not yet ordered the software pending results here, but the lab is already LocalTalked and I have Ethernet to this machine (IIcx)). ------------------------------ Date: 9 Jan 90 16:50 EST From: WMLBTAM%UCCCVM1.BITNET@forsythe.stanford.edu Subject: Can Kermit support scripting? Date: 9 January 1990, 16:37:18 EST >From: WMLBTAM at UCCCVM1 To: INFO-MAC at SUMEX-AIM.STANFORD.EDU Subj: Can Kermit support scripting? The latest version of Kermit for the Mac we can find is v.9(40), which won't support scripting. We have an application "Grateful Med" for both the pc and the Mac (two versions!) which communicates with an application on the host at the National Library of Medicine, to provide a front-end to the MEDLINE bibliographic data base. Unfortunately, Grateful Med has HAYES commands hard coded into the telecommunications module. We have a digital PBX which doesn't know Hayes AT commands from Rosanne Barr. A software engineer at NLM suggested trying to connect through the digital phone switch through Kermit, and then use a script to launch Grateful Med, which, finding the line already set up, would go ahead and do its thing with its host. Unfortunately(again!) the latest Kermits we have are Mac .9(40) and pc 2.28, neither of which support scripting--so we can't even do it under SoftPC with the pc version! Anybody out there have/have a pointer to later versions of Kermit for Mac (preferable) or pc (still be happy) which DO support scripting, a la Procomm (pc), Red Ryder, etc.? Thanks for any help... HDSC Setup chooses the interleave based on the machine it is running on, but it can't compensate for speedup cards and such. IWith the right speedup card, both a Plus and an SE can support 1:1 interleave, but unless you force HDSC Setup to use 1:1 you'll never get it. That may be why it showed 1:1 every time you tried it. I don't know whether LaCie's SilverLining will show you the interleave of a drive it didn't format, but I do know that you can buy it by itself. It comes bundled with LaCie hard disks but they sell it separately, as they do for their other software. I used to own a copy, but I sold it because it only works with SCSI hard disks, which aren't what I have. The drive that claimed it should run at 6:1 on a Plus and 3:1 on an SE was probably a very large and very fast drive. Apple's 3/2/1:1 suggestions work for most drives, but it's possible for a drive to be big enough and fast enough that even more interleave is needed. If you must make this choice, you are MUCH better off with an interleave that's too higgh than with one that's too low. -James Austin Fancy Signature: What fancy signature? I'm new! You put the init in your system folder, and MacPaint or StartupScreen-format images in a folder called "Screens" (also in the System Folder), and Backdrop will pick one at random at each startup. If you put in just one, you'll always get that one. ============ "Adam J. Overton" <FXAJO%ALASKA.BITNET@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU> writes-- You info-mac'd a message about a desktop PICT picture. Since I have a Mac II with a fair number of DAs, (five Meg of RAM helps) I didn't bother. Anyway, he seemed pretty happy with it, so good luck! ============= <PJORGENS%COLGATEU.BITNET@CORNELLC.cit.cornell.edu> (Peter Jorgensen) writes-- There is an INIT in the archives called DeskPicture.HQX that does what you want, I believe. You might also check out DeskPict-Package.hqx. The correct name for the first file is DESKPICT.HQX. ============= Thanks to everyone who responded. As it turns out, Backdrop is the only one that I have found that works for the Mac Plus. I have some troubles with running Photo Shop (it exits due to limited memory) and I have had some compatability problems with Superclock!. Otherwise, it is a decent init and I would probably recommend it. I wonder how big and heavy it is... i have been quite happy with my old tandy model 200, which has a footprint of about 8.5x11 inches and weighs a couple of pounds. about all i miss is a disk drive, as it only has 72k of memory. i think the tandy is the MAXimum size and weight a full-function laptop should be (are you listening Apple?). otherwise, why bother? i use the tandy for typing and for data collection in the field. it's an easy matter to transfer data via a basic program on the tandy through Versaterm-Pro onto the mac. i transfer text by just sending the file through the text editor on the tandy into Versaterm-Pro. this can be done, of course, in either direction. i'm sure many other terminal emulators can do the same. for big files and to save data forever, the tandy has a cassette port that is easy to use. While i'm on the subject, does anyone know if one can replace the memory chips in a tandy 200 with more capacious chips? currently the maximum of 72k is allocated to 3 banks of 24k which are in turn made up of 3*8k RAM that may be of the type HM6264LFP-12, HM6264LFP-15, HM6264LP-10, HM6264LP-12, HM6264LP- 15, or some combination. my documentation is not specific, and hey, i'm a geologist, what do you expect? if one could up the memory to a meg or more, it would be an even more useful machine. What you are doing wrong is expecting the program to work the way the documentation says it does... B-) Set Fields actually DOES work exactly as it should; it's Browse that doesn't. When you issue the Set Fields command, it does indeed set the visible fields as you want them set. Unfortunately, the Browse command in the menu (and also, I believe, double-clicking on the alias in the View window) does NOT do a Browse! It does a Browse Last, which displays the file the way it was LAST displayed, regardless of WHAT changes you made to the setup since then! If you open the Command window and leave it at the bottom of your screen, you can see the raw text equivalent of the commands you give using the Mac interface. This will show you exactly what I mean about Browse and Browse Last. The only workaround I can remember right now is to Browse by typing Browse into the Command window and not using any of the Mac shortcuts. I didn't find this on my own; tech support explained it to me. They knew exactly what was happening halfway through my description; I think they get a lot of calls aboutt this. However, they protest that this is in fact the way things SHOULD work, though they admit they changed it after all the docs were already printed. Despite this, I really liked FoxBase, though I wish they had given the programmers the week off while they proofread the docs. There is one other very similar "gotcha" which you may run into later. I tried the Mac II Diagnostic Sound and then installed JCremote. As I installed JCremote into my system folder SAM 1.3 warned me about attempts to modify the system file, however, this is not uncommon with a CDEV or RDEV. After installing it, I opened the chooser and selected JCremote. The system froze. When I rebooted the computer the computer started to launch, but the crashed. There was no bomb or any message, just a blank screen. After rebooting with a floppy and checking with Disinfectant 1.5, the system file was noted as having a damaged resource fork. This meant I had to install a new one. I am not sure which of the two mentioned files are the culprit.
