The Atasi of today is not the Atasi of yesteryear. Today's bought
yesterday's name, patents and licenses. People I trust like their new
drives very much; don't have any MTBFs, but they're still for sale!

I didn't know they were into >120M drives yet. Love to know more about
'em.

Me, I have a growing admiration for the Conner 100 and 200M drives, but
the jury's still deliberating.

Hello, just a tip for Boomerang and MasterJuggler users. I've been
using Boomerang 2.0B8, MasterJuggler 1.16, System 6.0.3, SE/30,
MultiFinder on. My system would lock up when trying to add certain
files to the MasterJuggler Application List. I found that if I turned
Boomerang off using Control Panel, the problem went away. Selecting
various options on Boomerang like changing its name to zBoomerang as
suggested in the Help info did not work. If any one has come across
this problem and solved it in a different way, I'd be happy to hear
about it.

I received my copy of DE v2.03 and crashed around with it for awhile. I
started having problems with it while downloading files from our local bbs.
Everytime the file would finish I would get a bomb. Everytime, even when I
turned it off. I have since removed it from my folder and still use DE

then let it fail so bad. Maybe next time.

Disk-claimer: I have no connections to Alsoft and have no vested interest
in promoting their products, other than to inform the Macintosh community
about what I think is an interesting and useful product. My opinions in this
note do not reflect those of my employers, the College of Wooster, etc.

I received the upgrade to DiskExpress II and have been using it for about
a week now. I have tested it on two Mac SEs, the one I use at work, which
has a slower Miniscribe drive, and the one I use at home, which has a fast
Quantum 80. Both these machines have 2.5 MBytes of RAM and run System
6.0.4. I haven't tested it on any other machi
So far I have found DiskExpress II to be very good, very clean, and very
compatible (I am running about 12 INITs including Timbuktu, Microsoft Mail,
AppleShare, Virex INIT, Responder, Public Folder, AutoIdle, INIT Picker,
and PacerLink AT Driver. Once a day, Disk Express II will begin to
defragment my hard disk in the background. If I move the mouse or begin
tying the process is instantly suspended. I haven't had any problems with
normal activities being slowed down. On the SE with the older, slower drive,
the defragmentation takes a bit longer; on the fast machine, deframenting
a half-dozen files takes only about ten or fifteen minutes of background time.
I haven't had any problems with it crashing, or with files being corrupted.
I think it only moves one file at a time, keeps a "Rescue" file in your
system folder for rebuilding the file should the machine go down during the
optimization. I have been very careful about backing up my hard disk more
often than usual since I installed DiskExpress II, but so far I haven't seen
any problems. The Mac the Knife rumors column may have had reports from
Beta testers who experienced crashes with pre-release version, or there may
be compatibility problems which I'm not aware of, but I would tentatively
say that Disk Express II works well.

> displaywrite3 documents to something reasonable in Word.
> Can anyone give me suggestions! (Please hurry!)

In DW3, you could save the file to Ascii, but there is a better
way. You can transfer more formatting codes by doing the
following:

1. From inside DW3, select J Document Utilities, F Convert
     Document.

2. Under the Convert Document Menu, we need to enter under A
the Document Name we wish to convert. Select A, then enter
the FULL name (including extension) of the DW3 file to
     convert to WP. Example: TEST.TXT

3. Now select B and enter a similar name for the converted
document, but one that ends in ".RFT". Example: TEST.RFT

4. The type of conversion should be 1: Text to Revisable-Form
Text. This should be the default. If not, select C and
     enter a 1.

5. We are now finished with this menu, so press ENTER. If the
first conversion is successful, a message should appear
saying that the document was converted.

6. Press Z to Return to Task Selection, and Z again to Return
     to Dos.

7. What the above has accomplished is to create a copy of the
original DW3 document in a new format, namely what IBM calls
Revisable-Form-Text, or DCA format. The DCA-RFT conversion
file that comes with Word on the Mac can directly convert
this format to a Word file.

8. Now use the Apple File Exchange Program to move the file
from a MSDOS disk to an Apple Disk, using the above
     mentioned conversion file.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Help with StuffIt (SOS)

Martin wonders why the .SIT files he receives from the archives and downloads
to his Mac will not unStuff.

It sounds to me like the files are being corrupted somewhere enroute to his
Mac.

StuffIT files are BINARY and not as easy to transfer across the net, nor to
download to a Mac, as files containing only lower ASCII (like .HQX files).

There are at least two times when the files are getting corrupted.

One is when the file comes off the net and into Martin's account. Depending on
the system he's using (VMS, CMS, UNIX) he may have to specify a binary
parameter to properly receive a binary file. (Check with your system manager or
some such guru to find out the proper method of handling binary files.)

The other is in downloading the file to his Mac. Again, depending on the host,
and the software used to download, a binary option might be needed. (If you're
using Kermit then you must specify binary when downloading the file.)

It would help to know both the type of host system you're using and what
program you run on your Mac to transfer files from the host.

Yes, HyperCard can be run multi-launch off a network. Using
AppleShare, first install HyperCard and ensure that the users don't have
the Make Changes privs. Then, run ResEdit, select the HyperCard application,
and make sure the "Shared" bit is checked. (In earlier versions of ResEdit,
check the "Cached" bit and not the "Shared" bit.)

HyperCard will then run multi-launch. It will be a little slower,
of course, as it will be running from a file server and not a local hard
drive, but the actual speed differential will depend on you network. Also,
users won't be able to make any changes to the stacks (unless you put them
in different folders than the application.)

Subject: Print Report Command

If anyone out there can help me with this, esp. David Willcox if you read
this, I need help with HyperCard.

At this resent moment, I created a "database" in order to store mailing
labels. This great since the person who uses the stack does not know too
much about the Mac at the present moment. But what I've run into is that
I cannot figure out how to make HyperCard print just certain labels or
specific labels that I need.

In that Print Report XCMD, David, the only thing I couldn't do was print
labels. If there is a way to do that with Print Report XCMD, please let
me know. If not, does anyone have a suggestion?

Also, does anyone really know what HyperCard 2.0 is really going to have
included in it?

Thanks for any help.

Can anyone direct me to a reference describing the RTF interchange text
format? It's syntax seems very similar to TeX.

Thanks, Mark

Subject: Summary of disk archive software replies

I asked about programs for cataloging disks. I am running out of room
on my hard disk, and cannot affort to buy a larger one right now. I
received over a dozen replies which are summarized below. I have a
"starred" section (*) for each package suggested, in no particular
order. "Lettered" paragraphs (A, B, etc.) come from different replies.
I have done major editing to save space and corrected obvious errors.

* Retrospect - Dantz Development Corp

(A) I've found that one of the most amazing packages for both archiving
and backup is Retrospect. It is designed in such a way that if you
only need the simpler features, the exotic ones do not confuse or get
in the way. I would love to convince someone else of the wonders of
Retrospect
...Yup, it's expensive.

(B) I suggest you take a good look at the Retrospect archiving software.

(C) Our program, Retrospect, will do much of what you mentioned
regarding archiving. Retrospect can copy or move data onto a set of
numbered floppies, leaving a catalog on your hard disk which lets you
see what is out there and retrieve with ease. You tell it what files
you want back, and it tells you what floppies to insert.

* FILELIST - BMUG bulletin board

It's fast, simple, free, creates a "database" of records, one record
per file. It will sort the records by filename, diskette, date
created, filetype/creator, and other parameters. It records all the
directory path information for each file as well. The author also
posted the source code for FILELIST on CompuServe; it's written in
Think C. It is found as FILELIS.SIT in LIB4 of the MACDEV forum.

* Disk Librarian - Info-Mac archives

You feed disks to it. It reads each one and builds a catalog of all of
your disks. You can print lists by disk or by file name. My major
complaint is that it doesn't have any facility (beyond scrolling
through a window) to search the catalog for a string.

* Disk Quick (commercial version of Disk Librarian)

(A) I used Disk Quick to catalog my disks. I does a reasonably good
job. I can't remember if it prints labels though.

(B) Disk Quick by Ideaform. They also sell the MacLabeller Plus
package, a great disk labelling package. Ideaform, Inc 1(515)472-7256/
PO Box 1540, 612 West Kirkwood/ Fairfield, IA 52556.

* Disk Box

The HyperCard stack DiskBox is nice in that it organizes disks into
boxes, so once you find the card for the disk, you know where it is.
Handy for those of us with lots of floppies in lots of boxes. It won't
automatically read a disk for you.

* HyperLabels

HyperLabels has templates for a lot of fancy graphics on labels that
you can print. It also will read the catalog of a disk and put the
content into the HyperCard card for the disk. Flashy, but I find its
method of keeping a directory of disks to be, um, inconvenient. It
will print labels.

* Since none of the above do what I want, I'm writing my own HyperCard
stack that combines the disk reading facilities of HyperLabels with the
disk box organization of DiskBox. I'm 90% done, which means that it
will probably be another couple of months.

* Mac Disk Catalogger II (MDC II)

Now out of print. It was probably the best for what you had in mind,
as it also had a DA that could search the database. New Canaan
Microcode (MDC II) 1(203)966-6969/ 136 Beech Rd./ New Canaan, CT 06840

* Check out a program named "CatMac" from Phenix Specialties, Inc.
(2981 Corvin Dr. Santa Clara CA 95051) It can do more and less than
you want. There is even a new and improved version comming "soon."

* d'Librarian - Demo in info-mac archives.

* Disk Ranger - a commercial package (inexpensive) from MainStay that
seems to be what you want.

* My Disk Labeller - I've also heard good things about a package from
Williams & Macias called "My Disk Labeller", but have not actually seen
this one in action.

Subject: unpitting archives at uxa.cso.uiuc.edu

I am new to the network, and would appreciate some advice on how to
download and unpack some of the archives at the above site. Yes, I
have seen (and downloaded) the file unpit.appl, both as a binary and
as an ascii file, and have fiddled about with the type and creator fields
using MacTools, but have still not come up with anything that works. I have
tried the following programs: Stuffit 1.5.1, BinHex 4.0, and PackIt III v1.3.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Please reply to:

Yes, you can use NETPRINT, redirect your PS output to a LaserWriter.

BUT: you're going to have problems here. The big installation I know
like this shows that TOPS plus NETPRINT installed barely leaves room for
VP to load its documents with Professional Extension and QEMM-386 making
all the room they can. And the print connection gets hosed for no
discernable reasom.

Now, their IINTX's hard-disk was corrupted, too, but they fixed that;
the print problems have merely fallen to a dull scream.
