Subject: 32-bit irregularity

I have run into a problem that so far seems to be related with 32 Bit Quick
Draw. In Color Quick Draw, a change in the graphic device's depth using the
control panel CDEF monitor will result in update events generated for each
window with the update region being the entire window. However after
installing 32 Bit QuickDraw, this is no longer the case. Instead the update
region consists of only newly exposed regions. As a result, windows with
non-system color palettes will not be updated correctly. Currently, I don't
have any documentation on 32 Bit QuickDraw, so I don't know if I have to do
any thing special to be compatible with 32 Bit QuickDraw.

If any one has any solution or suggestion to this problem please send mail
directly to the following Bitnet address. Thank you.

Subject: 8 character limit to passwords in Appleshare

I'm using PacerShare on a VAX, and Apple's AppleShare software on my MAC's.
Some of my users have passwords on the VAX of more than 8 characters; when they
try to log on to the VAX from a Mac to mount an AppleShare volume, they can't.
As soon as they type the ninth character, the AppleShare driver bounces them
out. I talked to someone in Apple, who said that wasn't likely to change soon.
Does anyone know how I can patch the driver so that I can use longer passwords?

Subject: Alien Monitors for the Mac

Hi All!

Excuse me for my ignorance if this is a stupid question -

Can anybody spare a few words to tell me something about monitors? I
have been feeling quite confusing that the Mac monitors in the market
are generally very expensive. By a change I stopped by a local store
that deals peripherals for the IBM world and the merchandises are
relatively less expensive. I liked a high resolution flat-screen
monitor - 14 inch diameter, light weighted, slim design with quite
attractive coating color. The cost was under $160. I was told that the
resolution was that of comparable with the Mac monitors. However, the
salesman was not prepared to answer my question because he never touched
a Mac ( :=)).

Question: If I go ahead and purchase a board such as "Multiscreen",
which is inexpensive and supports variety of monitors, will I be able to
use such an attractive flat-screen monitor?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Subject: Disk Cataloging Software

Use FILELIST by Erny Tontlinger. You can get it from the BMUG bulletin board.
It is very easy to use and quick, providing most of the info you need when
cataloging volumes/files.

FILELIST 1.2 lists filename, size, type, creator, date-created, date-modified,
volume, and path, and the list can be sorted by any one of these variables.

You can save the list in FILELIST or text (space- or tab-separated fields)
formats. In the text format you can then process the list with other
applications such as word processers or database tools.

It'll run through your diskettes as fast as you can insert them into
the drive (does hard disks also).

Drawbacks? One that can be bothersome, but not insurmountable, is that you
can't catalog two or more volumes by the same name in the same list (so,
change the volume name, or catalog that volume to a separate list).

FILELIST is found on BMUG's bb as:
FILELIST1.2 20352 Freeware file and disk lister (02-24-89)

The source code can be found on CompuServe in the file FILIS.SIT in LIB 4
of the MACDEV forum, according to the author. I think it is written in Think C.

They're FREE. (How about someone posting these files to INFO-MAC???)

started having problems with it while downloading files from our local bbs.
Everytime the file would finish I would get a bomb. Everytime, even when I

Was your telecommunications program White Knight 11.02. There exists a
compatibility problem with that and DE II v 2.03. Either WK 11.04 or
DE II v2.04 will solve the problem. The problem turned out to be one
where WK was interpreting a system call one way, and DE had trapped it
and interpreted another.

I have also noted a compatibility problem with SUM II recover routines
while DE is on and under Multifinder. That problem has been reported to
Alsoft who are tracking it. The problem disappears if you do not run
Multifinder.

OFFICE MEMO Disk Express II Date: 1/19/90
DiskExpress II seems to be getting some bad publicity lately, apparently
concerning v2.03. I received my copy direct from AlSoft as an update, and the
revision they sent to me was v2.01, with which I have had no trouble in fairly
complicated environments.
   I operate v2.01 on a '020-accelerated SE and a vanilla Mac-II, both under
system 6.0.2, and with a fist-full of other INITs. The SE is part of a MIDI
music system and has a hard-disk formatted with 6 SCSI partitions. The II has
two hard-disks and is used for program development.
I have only experienced two problems with DiskExpress II. (1)At
installation-time the cdev crashed when I tried to use it without having
rebooted to load the INIT. (2)In the context of a fist-full of INITs on my
Mac-II, I had to load SoundMaster after DiskExpress, but the problem has
something to do with the total configuration, because DiskExpress and
SoundMaster alone are load-sequence independent.
For the last few weeks DiskExpress has run error free and is doing a good job
of optimizations. I can hear the background optimization going on even while
my SE is playing several synthesizers. My music notation application does not
affect it. Being interrupted by SUM's Shield INIT doesn't seem to bother it.
My word processor, page layout, graphics and MPW tools do not affect it. My
track-map is clean and unfragmented, and its ability to prioritize files on the
basis of usage is causing my launchings to noticably speed up for my frequently
used files.

Subject: Hard disk interleave again

After the recent discussion on Info-Mac concerning interleave
factors for hard disks, I was surprised to discover that HDSetup
wanted to format the Apple internal 80 meg drive on my new IIci with
an interleave factor of 2. It seemed to be the consensus that a Mac
II should be able to handle an interleave of 1 for most ordinary
drives, so I was surprised that a IIci couldn't (or at least that
HDSetup thought it couldn't). I let it do what it wanted, but I
wonder if an interleave of 2 is really right for that combination.
Does anyone have any further information on this?

I own a SE/30. There are two problems. The first is that there is only
one hole in the case to stick disks into.

Secondly, there is only 1 drive connector on the motherboard. The SE had
two connectors.

Hello, all.

Does anyone have/have any information about large scale output devices for
Macs? We're looking at setting up the Theatre folks here with computers,
but they will need something that can print out stage designs on a single
sheet (no taping LW pages together, or anything like that). Max size is
something in the neighborhood of 2x3 feet. The only thing I can think of

And another thing...any advise about large screen B/W monitors for SE/30's?

Opps! In my previous posting, I belive I may have overstated the
capabilities of CAP on a UNIX box. I thought that CAP put out
AppleTalk packets directly; in fact, it puts out AppleTalk-in-IP
packets. This is an important difference, because it means you still
need a GatorBox (or some other router) to translate the
AppleTalk-in-IP packets to AppleTalk for the Macs. Disconnecting
the GatorBox makes the CAP printer inaccessible. Therefore, the cost
of the two options is really about the same...

A Mac/compatible that finally has a reasonable price/performance ratio.
Is this our salvation from Apple's monopolistic pricing policy? ...nah...
These performance figures display the Amiga as a good alternative to the
low-end Mac. The problem is, is Apple at all interested in the low-end
Mac market? Likewise, how interested are we? (who is out there that is
still on a Mac+ would buy another Mac+ today? Be honest).

How soon/can the Amax be upgraded to be a Mac II-series competitor?
This is probably what it will take to get Apple's prices competitive.
It's *insulting* that a VGA 80386 costs less than a SE/20.

Why is Apple's repoire worse than EXXON's? (how goes the 90 day warranty?)
When was the last time info-mac heard anything from an Apple *spokesman*?
Does Apple have a customer relations and/or service Email address? Why not?

file ftp-ed from the sumes-aim info-mac archive was not recognized as
a control panel device after decoding and un-stuffing. It also didn't
work. Several people replied that they had no problem. Some
suggested a possible conflict with some other init. Someone also
suggested I be sure I was using the latest version of GateKeeper. I
was assured that the version on the Rice U shadow archive checked out.
I obtained a copy from there -- same result. Michael Richardson
re-stuffed and BinHexed his working copy which he mailed to me. Same
result.

Today I discovered the problem. I had not configured GateKeeper for
StuffIt. I hid GateKeeper, Gatekeeper log, and Gatekeeper Aid in a
folder, restarted, fired up StuffIt, decoded, unstuffed, quit. Presto
-- SuperClock! displayed its icon. Get Info recognized it as a cdev.
Moved it to the system folder, restarted. Problem solved. Next step
is to get Gatekeeper back out and configure it so that StuffIt can
create the resource fork.

Thanks to all who helped.
