Subject: AppleTalk boards

I need help! I have a client who, with the intention
of adding Macintoshes, put Appletalk boards in two
IBM XT's, connecting them to a QMS PS-810 postscript
printer.

He has the AppleTalk boards that ship with Appleshare PC
desk accessory. (I'm sorry I don't know what version of
the da.)

He wants to know why it's taking so long to print. The
QMS has 2MB of memory. Another interesting problem is
that he gets the message that the printer is being
initialized each time he sends a print job. I would
understand this if he had Macs attached...but I am
at a loss on this one. It's the second or third
such complaint I've had about the XT in this configuration.
My guess is just that the XT is slow, but that probably
isn't the whole story...

Thanks
Judy Frawley

Here's a stack that maintains a bibliography and allows you to import
and export the data from/to text files for extraction from/inclusion in
your wordprocessed papers, or to other 'reference' stacks, etc.. While
there are lots of these types of stacks around we have found this one by
far the best, and it's in daily use by many of the Mac users in my
Department. It was written by an ex-PhD student of mine, Dr Jane Miller,
who is now at Carleton University, Canada (jane_miller@carleton.ca). The
stack comes with an excellent, though space consuming, help stack that
explains everything. It's shareware so if you like it please support Jane.

NAME OF DEMO:
Diamond, The Compactor for Macintosh

TYPE OF FILE/APPLICATION:
Utility

WHAT THE DEMO/APPLICATION DOES:
Diamond, Version 4.6, The Compactor for Macintosh(, developed by SOFT
Technologies of France, is being published in the United States by Sextant
Corporation of Sarasota, Florida.

Diamond is an extremely efficient packing/unpacking utility which has enjoyed
great success in Europe. The product is much more efficient than any similar
Macintosh utility.

The product is much easier to use than its competition, and does not require
complex decisions about whose algorithm to use. Diamond uses a pull-down
preference menu with a few check boxes. Compaction is offered at 3 levels,
depending on how much compaction versus speed of compaction is required. Users
may also choose not to compact, which is a very fast way to back up large
files, with automatic prompting for additional diskettes. Restoration is fast
and easy.

Compaction can reduce the original file to as little as 20% of the original,
although 30% is the norm. Competitive products compact to about 50%. The time
of compaction for the most dense level is about the same as other products.

Unpacking is super fast - 800K in about a minute on a Mac SE, and only seconds
on a Mac IIci. Overall, Diamond is 5-10 times faster at unpacking. Unlike
others, Diamond can pack hierarchical folders, with perfect restoration of
everything, including color of a folder, or scroll bar position. Diamond can
retain the Finder information, putting folders back exactly where they came
from. This works for different disk drives as well. Packed file(s) or
folder(s) which were located in the upper right corner of the desktop will
unpack in the same place, even on other Mac desktops.

Diamond permits cancelling during either pack/unpack operations without
problem, and without leftover icons. Password protection is provided, if
desired. Diamond includes the option to include unpacking code with a packed
file. This is not needed for use internally, but in commercial applications ,
permits others unpack without having to have the program. Diamond occupies 30K
of disk space, including 9K of online Help.

I have a original Mac (which I upgrated !), but shortly after the purchase
I had to get another disk drive, and I got a Super 5 400K. I no longer use
it much today, however I would like to keep it as back-up. This 400 K

four years. I 've used a cleaning kit without success. Can somebody refer
me to a respectable shop specifying the name and address where this small
maintenance work could be done ? By the way, the manufacturing cie is no

Subject: Files, VREFNUMS, and headaches!

To fill in curious netsters: I have been working on an application where
I create a data file and store information in it in the form of resources.
I was using: FSDELETE, CREATE, CREATERESFILE, followed by OPENRESFILE.
The problem: CREATERESFILE uses only a filename instead of filename and
VREFNUM, If I tried to create a file in a different directory, I would
get two files (one from CREATE and one from CREATERESFILE).
The solution: simply use SETVOL to VREFNUM before CREATERESFILE.
...of course the solution is easier than the problem.

Thanx to all netsters for using your bandwidth, and especial thanx to all
those mac gurus who told me of Inside Mac IV (I just got it, yea!!) and

Key Lights - The Keyboard Light Sequencer

Key Lights is a CDEV which makes the Num Lock, Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock
lights on an Apple Extended Keyboard sequence in a back and fourth motion.
The Control Panel interface allows you to set the speed and mode of
sequencing, as well as turn the sequencing on and off without having to
restart. Key Lights requires only 3.5 K of RAM and works correctly under
Single and MultiFinder on any Macintosh which supports the Extended ADB
Keyboard.

The program is HappiWare. If you like it, smile! And please send a picture

Subject: Mac Portable / System Rest

Hiya!

Does anyone know the story behind System Rest on the Mac Portable? The
'Owner's Guide' says that this "feature" slows the usual 16 MHz clock
speed down to around 1 MHz when "you have had no interaction with
the computer for 15 seconds." [p 15] It seems clear that one can
disable this "feature" from software: the Guide explains how to toggle
the System Rest function on and off from the Control Panel. Any ideas on
how to do this from your own code? The discription makes me wonder whether
the system is checking the event queue in order to determine a state of
"no interaction"... Does this mean that I can get around it by posting my
own events periodically? Lastly, how in the heck did they do this in the
first place?? Do they use two clocks or what?

Situation Normal, I'm Confused...

since it really consists of only one A trap call, I can't see
why it won't work on another machine configuration.

Hello. I wonder if you could help me with a problem I am having with MPW

tried to create the Sample application using the Assembler, as described
in the MPW 3.0 reference manual as my first illustration and found that
errors occur. The result I get is as follows:

I'm afraid I can't figure out what the problem is. All the files seem

                              Eric L. Peters

New HyperTalk Dictionary was created with James H. Moore's 'Create a Text
DA' utility application. The idea was inspired by George Coyne's HyperTalk
Dictionary DA, and like his DA, the information for New HyperTalk Dictionary
was obtained from the 'HyperTalk Index' stack by George John and BBR
Unlimited. My thanks to these individuals for their inspiration as well as
for compiling and distributing the necessary information.

This DA adds an additional (and I think important) function to the HyperTalk
Dictionary DA: the ability to copy the sample text from the DA and paste it
into the HyperCard stack that you are working on. Otherwise, it is exactly
the same as the HyperTalk Dictionary DA.

New HyperTalk Dictionary may be distributed freely except as part of any
commerical product. The number in the parentheses with each entry is a
reference to the appropriate page number describing the command in "The
Complete HyperCard Handbook" by Danny Goodman.

Subject: Request for Non-Dismountable AUFS Volumes

We mount a public volume on all the Macs in our department from a SUN
Fileserver running CAP (Columbia aufs fileserver). Some users throw this
volume in the trash, dismounting it and requiring future users to either
remount or reboot to get it back.

Is there any way to make a CAP aufs volume non-dismountable? I would
like the volume to behave like the startup disk or like a disk that has an
open application. The system refuses to dismount such volumes. Just having
an open application on the public volume is not sufficient because our problem
users would quickly discover how to close it.

Scroll Limit is an INIT/cdev that allows you to select global
threshold and repeat delays for scroll bars. If your scroll
bars seem "too fast," Scroll Limit will let you regulate their
speed. While it's most useful on faster machines (especially
those running at speeds greater than 16 MHz), Scroll Limit will
work on any Mac with System 4.1 or greater. It's freeware.

Version 1.2 is a maintenance release which fixes a cosmetic

with Color QuickDraw.)

Subject: Sound Manager Package

Here is the latest version of the Sound Manager Package.
This incorporation of utilities provides almost all you need to
manipulate sound files and therefore eliminates the following files
>From the info-mac archives:
	** sound-manager-package-13.hqx
	** sound-mover-15.hqx
	** soundcap-snd-converter.hqx
	** sound-leech-08.part*.hqx

Included in this archive is: SoundMover 1.52r, IBeep2 and StartupSndInit.

1. SoundMover 1.52r, live Apple's Font/DA Mover, shows you what sounds are
installed in your system and will let you create "little suitcases", like
those used by Suitcase II or (Font/DA)/Master Juggler.

It will open and allow conversion between the following formats:
-snd1 (originally used for the Sound Control Panel device),
-snd2 (used in Hypercard although proper conversion will be provided from
    type 1 to 2),
-FSSD or data type sounds (SoundEdit,SoundCap,SoundWave),
-ASND (World Builder Library sounds) and
    -SMSD (Crystal Quest Sounds).

Simple editing is provided as well as information on sound type, online
help, a sample waveform, bytes used, compression rate and volume is adjustable.

2. IBeep2 was originally created to allow non Macintosh Class II machines
(Plus and SE) to have sound since the Sound Control Panel utility was intended
for the MacII. It is a simple "Sound" cdev for users of system 4.1 or below
and it does add new options: sounds for eject, shutdown and restart. It is
therefore compatible with system 6.0 and higher. Sounds can be installed
via SoundMover.

3. StartupSndInit is a startup document that will play an installed sound
upon starting up and booting of the Macintosh. Sounds can be installed via
SoundMover.

** the Sound->snd program has been eliminated since it's function is now
performed through SoundMover.

Subject: System problem

I am having an unusual problem with startup of a Mac. It is a MacSE with
a Bering 40MB removable disk and 2 floppies. Using System 6.0.3 when it
is booted using multi-finder, everything goes normal until the windows
are drawn for the folders that are open. After the window outlines are
drawn but before the window contents are filled in I get a SysBeep.
Afterwards things seem to almost work, but creating postscript files
sometimes causes MacDrawII to hang, terminate or crash.

I have another system disk (floppy) that boots correctly - no SysBeep,
but it never mounts the Bering disk. I have to run DiskFirstAid to
get the disk mounted.

I have replaced all the system files on the Bering with those on the
floppy, and there is no change in behavior.

I would appreciate any ideas what is causing the SysBeep. Thanks,

Subject: ToolBox PixelMap Problem

	Here is the Problem :
I am using MPW Version 3.0, MPW Pascal 2.0. I am trying to
copy a pixel map from a window to a pixelmap Handle.
I use CopyPixMap, then allocate memory for the Pixel Map Base Address.
Then I try to Use CopyBits in the Line :

	PixMap1 := theWindow^.PortPixMap^^;
	PixMap2 := MyPixMapHandle^^;

	CopyBits(PixMap1,PixMap2,theWindow^.PortPixMap^^.Bounds,
		theRect,SrcCopy,NIL);

When Compiling I Get :

# CopyBits(PixMap1,PixMap2,theWindow^.PortPixMap^^.Bounds,
# ?
### Pascal - Error 144 Type Conflict of Operands
# ?
### Error 144 Type Conflict of Operands

I have tried to typecast the Pixmaps to BitMaps but that does not compile
either. I have no where else to turn. Thanks for any help

Subject: Word 4.0 Problems

Hi, I am using Word 4.0 to do a Resume. I set up Word with 2 column tables
. On the second column of the table, when I get to the right edge of the column
while typing, my text disappears into the right margin, after a few more chara
cters, the word will wrap onto the next line. I can't find out how to get all t
he words I typed up to show up on the screen. The words are still there, they j
ust won't show up or print on the screen or my imagewriter.

Please send responses directly to me. I need an answer ASAP.
