Subject: "Buttons" in scrolling fields

Dan,
Right now (within the constraints of HC 1.2.x) the best way I know of to do
what you want is to write a handler in the field that will select the word that
the user clicked on, and then jump to a card by that name or whatever. I have
developed several stacks that use this technique, and it works quite well, as
long as clicking on all identical words should cause identical actions. (i.e.
clicking on one instance of "cat" should not cause something different to
happen than clicking on any other instance of "cat". This problem can be
overcome with some additional programming, and I'd be glad to tell you how if
you need to do that.)

Here's a script that will do this handling when the user clicks on ANY locked
field. Put this script in your background.

on mouseUp
get the clickloc -- do this first to avoid problems with mouse movers
set the cursor to watch -- always a good idea to prevent extra clicks, etc.
if not (the name of the target contains "field") then pass mouseUp
set the locktext of the target to false -- so we can select the text
click at it -- the original clickloc
click at it -- a double click which will select the word
get the selection -- the word the user clicked on
set the locktext of the target to true -- relock the field
go cd it -- or handle the word however you want (for instance "find word it"
if the result is not empty then -- no such card
Answer "Sorry, no more info on " & quote & it & quote & "."
  end if
end mouseUp

You can add lots of sophistication to this basic handler, like creating a list
of "valid" words and checking the selection against these.
( "if it is in GoodList then ...")
etc.

Let me know if I can be of furthur help.

Subject: Apple Macintosh Video Card utility

A quick question to anyone who has used this utility (it's a monitor CDEV
extension used to obtain interlaced, RS170-compatible video output signals from
a Mac II video card). I've installed 32-Bit Quickdraw, the Monitors 4.0 Control
Panel and the General file. When the "Options" button is selected in the
Monitors cdev of the Control Panel, two radio buttons and a check box are
supposed to be displayed, one of which is the "Interlaced" button. Neither of
the buttons are appearing, though, for me. Obviously I've done something wrong.
Any help in resolving this problem would be appreciated.

Thanks

Subject: AppleShare File Server and GateKeeper Aid together?

Hey folks.

I just tossed a copy of GateKeeper Aid on my AppleShare 2.0 file server. Now,
when the machine starts up (It's an SE/30, if that helps), after the file
server program gets going, I get a box saying that "GateKeeper Aid has
encountered FCB expansion." and an OK box. Anybody got any idea exactly what
the heck this means? Does it mean that Gatekeeper Aid isn't doing anything, or
what? I'm not even sure what manual I can look in for this one.

Subject: AppleShare via EtherNet?????

Hello all,

I am sure all of you have seen a lot of messages regarding AppleShare via
Ethernet. My question goes beyond that basic question.

We have a SE/30 with 2 MB RAM and an internal 40MB HD and an external 66MB
HD as our file server. We have approximately 3 Mac Plus's and 7 Mac SE's
without HD's, 2 Mac SE's with 20MB HD's, 2 Mac II's with 40MB HD's and 5
Mac IIcx's with 40MB HD's. These machines serve both our office and lab
users, and they basically use these machines for wordprocessing and
spreadsheet work {no database!!}. We also have 4 ImageWriter II's
{AppleTalk chips installed} and 1 LaserWriter IINT also hooked up via Local
Talk {basically Faralon Phonet Connectors stretching over four seperate
rooms [1 room is the lab, across the hall] using a Passive Star network
tapology}.

What I would like to do is to hook up all the Mac's {except for the Mac
Plus's, since they can't support one} together with EtherTalk {placing
Ethernet boards in those machines} and run AppleShare on the Ethernet. My
problem is that our ImageWriter II's and LaserWriter IINT cannot be hooked
up to the Ethernet directly to be used as printers. I have heard you can
have a Kenetics FastPath {spelling??} hooked up to this type of network in
order to use the LaserWriter {and perhaps the ImageWriter II's}.

I would like to know if anyone has solved this problem {hooking up
LaserWriter/ImageWriter II's to a EtherTalk network} and how they might
have solved this. Any information as soon as possible would be
appreciated, since I am writting a proposal for upgrade fairly quickly.
Please send all information {as detailed as possible would be good} to
<shahryar@sutro.sfsu.edu>. I will summarize if I can to Info-Mac at a
later time.

Thank you for any and all help,

Dear fellow Info-Mac'ers:

I have had the product SUM II for the Macintosh for the past year and have
found it to be one the most useful utility products out for the Macintosh.
Unfortunately the one thing that SUM II cannot do very easily is to recover
data from corrupted files {example: A person Mac suddenly reboots by
itself and all the data in the file he was working on [in this case
Microsoft Word] is lost [Microsoft Word opens up a new document when the
corrupted file is launched]}. I have heard that there is a program called
CanOpener for the Mac which will fix such files.

My question is if anyone out there has used it and whether it really does
work as I have heard it does. Please send all information to
<shahryar@sutro.sfsu.edu>. I will try to summarize the information I get
to Info-Mac later.

I've figured out how to use the BitFTP server to ftp files to my local

they are here. Specifically:

1) How should I receive the files from my "reader"?
2) Can I kermit the things over to my Mac like I do with other binary

3) Once on the Mac, how can I "unshar" them (I don't have UNIX on

Has anyone had experience with Tokentalk products? I have on loan from
our local Apple reps MACLAN, which allows networked Macs to access MSDOS
file servers. They also generously supplied Appletalk for the PC (ver. 2)
and H3 Systems' SE token ring card. I've tried a variety of MSDOS
machines for use as file servers (XT, AT, PS/2) and a variety of IBM token
ring cards (adapters I & II, /A, and 4/16). I can successfully mount the
MSDOS file server on my SE desktop, but when I try to copy files to the
MSDOS machine, both it and the SE lock up. For the PC, it's a fatal error,
most times the SE will recover after the PC has been turned off. I should
also add I'm only using the Lan Support Package token ring drivers or
Tokreui.com, as I understand Appletalk is allergic to NETBIOS.

Has anyone seen or heard of a Tokentalk TCP/IP product?

Why won't Apple directly support accessing MSDOS file servers? AFTP for
the Apple Token ring card allows file transfers from MSDOS file servers.
Why not throw the gate wide open? It would sell lots of Macs om my campus.

Hi net'ers,

I am looking for an application similar to DOCMaker that can create self-reading
documentation files. In particular, I am looking for an application named
"Document Reader", by Andrew Welch.

DOCMaker is a nice package, but if the only thing in it is a page-length
picture, then DOCMaker will not allow you to scroll down, thus preventing you
>From seeing the whole picture. Also, it does not offer an easy way to format
or move pictures, and I don't like to be limited to one font or install
fonts in the DOCapplication using Font/DA Mover (what are "standard system"
fonts for!).

If you know where I can find Document Reader, or other programs that do what
I require, I would appreciate if you would let me know.

Thank you,

Subject: MacPaint Empty file Problems...

Hi y'all,

Hey. I just finished a rather (said with English accent) frustrating session
with my SE/30, 5Mb, 40MB. I had a MacPaint file (or at least, that is what its
type and creator claimed). When ever I double clicked it I got a MacPaint
window with garbage in it, and the message: "Not enough memory for snapshot".
After clicking "OK",... Hang! Nothing worked (ok, the mouse would).
After much probing, I found that the root of the problem was the data fork of
the mac-paint file was empty! So I tried creating a new file, doing no
drawing, and saving the file. The file was 5K!

Two notes: If I am not doing something else stupid, I don't think this is
very good behavior on the part of MacPaint. It should never crash my computer
-- especially when doing something like reading an empty file! What would
happen in a down-loaded file from a network was corrupted!? Second -- why
have a 5K file for an empty drawing!?

I was using MacPaint II. Grrr!

Subject: Mac Plus Clock Chip

Can a clock chip be replaced without replacing the entiire
Motherboard of a Mac Plus? My plus has been behaving strangely
over the last month. It began to lose time and date information.
I replaced the battery and it worked fine for a day or so. Now
upon aproximately 50% of the time boot up, it loses time and date
information, other times it will lose only other settings stored
in Pram such as mouse speed or Ram Cache but nothing else.

I have zapped the Pram by holding down <option-shift-command>
when calling up the Control Panel. I have reinstalled System
6.0.5 on my machine twice and still the problem persists. The
Machine was a 128K Mac purchsesed in 1985 that has subsequently
been upgraded to a Plus with 2.5 MB of RAM. I put a fresh battery
in it 3 weeks ago. It does exhibit power supply troubles such as
a an expanding contracting screen image when it is warm out
(above 80 degrees). I do have AppleCare but absent a complete
failure of the power supply or an exhibition of the expanding
contracting screen problem, my dealer, (currently the Ohio State
University) will not replace the power supply.

Has anyone else run across this trouble? The source of the
trouble could either be (a) the clock chip, (b) the battery I
purchased, (c) the failing power supply. Has anyone experienced
similar difficulties and come up with a solution?

Call the local CDC sales reps and ask for a demo of Desktop/VE for the
MAC. We have some hardware limitations on the CDCNET front end box that
we will have to attend to before we can run it. (around $300 US I think)

Desktop/VE gives you the remote Cyber on the Mac's screen, point and click,
drag to copy (up-, down-load or remote dup) etc. Also the interface for
any Mail system (and probably most applications) can be set up with scripts

I have the foolowing problem when printing the Postscript files
generated on Mac (by pressing Control F after clicking OK in printdialog and postprocessing this file to print on nonApple PS printers) on a
QMS800 PS printer. The characters in the file are made up by superimosing
one or more charcters together (it is like defining ` on e to get accented
e in European Languages) and they print fine on nonPS printers such as
Imagewriter and HP Deskwriter. But the Mac driver for PS appear to introduce
"microspaces" between individual characters, with the result the superimostions
get "unglued". If there is a way to turn off this "microspacing" then the
document should print alright. Is there anyway to do this, for example, by
placing certain postscript commands in the document itself? I have tried
all the pssible settings in the Laserwriter page setup and preferences
dialog hoping to fix this problem, but without succcess. Please let me
share your expertise if you have some knowledge of how we can turn off
this "inter-character microspacing" so that the superimpsed chars will

not found one in the area of physics, or physical science. Are
there any available? Is anyone developing one currently?

I have been authorized to begin developing some interactive
courseware for physics at Calvin. It will be an interdisciplinary
project between the education and physics departments. The target
audience for this development is the entry-level physics courses
(1st year college, 12th grade A.P). The Macintosh is the platform
of choice because of the authoring software available. Programs
like SuperCard 1.5 for color and stand-alone programs, Studio/1
for animation, MacRecorder for digital sound sampling, and others.

Development:
     - Is there anyone out there who has undertaken such a task
in a similar discipline (Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics)
who could offer some wise words?

     - Would anyone be interested in contributing to such a stack?
Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
on both the physics instruction, and educational methods
side of development. Joint authorship would also be
welcomed. The project will run from July 6th until January
       1991.

Software:
     - Has anyone had experience (success or failure) with
       SuperCard, Studio 1, and/or MacRecorder?

     - Has anyone, not tied to non-disclosure, seen HyperCard 2.0?
Will it support compilation, color, or multiple screens?
[Note to Apple - I would be willing to help beta test new
versions of HyperCard or ResEdit available before 1991]

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Possible hazardof re-inking HP cartridges

I have been told by a fellow netter that some ink manufacturers incorporate
cyanide into their ink.I presume that this is done to inhibit microbial
growth so as to improve the shelf life of the product. Given that the
DeskWrite cartridge mechanism works essentially as an atomizer, the
possibility exists thatthe cyanide concentration in a small enclosed

be most cautious when selecting the type of waterproof ink for re-inking
these cartridges. I strongly recommend that you call the ink manufacturer
to find out if they use cyanidein their ink preparation. If not, you
should t least ventilate the room in which the printing is done.

Actually, while it is true that is not worth the copyright holder's
time and money to persue infringement suits, it is definitely against
the law. ***FURTHER: both UP and API have logged on and/or sent
e-mail to many of the mac boards I frequent informing the sys-ops that
they must remove *ALL* electronic images from their copyrighted
strips or they would persue legal action against the boards and the sysops.
sigh. so much for my calvin and hobbes collection.

Subject: Simple Beep and Harpsichord snd's confused...

A strange thing:
Originally, I had Apple's standard snd's; Simple Beep, Monkey,
Clink-Clank, and Boing. And they made the sound their name said they
do. For a while I have been using several other cute PD sounds, either
installed in my system, or using Suitcase. Recently I noticed that
Simple Beep now makes the noise belonging to HyperCard's Harpsichord.

This problem had been somewhat erratic before, now it seems stuck that
way. Various combinations of renumbering snd's and renaming them and
installing and de-installing them doesn't change it... Also, I just
recently upgraded to 6.0.5...

Not that Simple Beep is all that wonderful, but it souldn't sound like
Harpsichord....

Has anyone else noticed this happen? What cause, etc.....

Subject: Software Compatibility of 030 Upgraded Mac+ and SE

There was a recent query about running IIci, etc software on accelerated
Mac + and SE computers. I can provide a partial answer. Software which does
not really require the newer ROMS will run fine. GOOD software checks for
the presence of 020/881 or 030/882, NOT the flavor of ROMS installed. So,
if color quickdraw is not absolutely needed, then programs should run. An
example of a program that runs fine on my 030/881 upgraded Mac+ is
Mathematica. (They got it right since I was a beta tester for them :)).

A counter example is Vellum, a cad program. It won't run on the accelerated
Mac+.

I believe that in this niche of the market we will have to rely on the vendors
of the boards (Total Systems, Novy, Radius, etc.) to eventually provide patches
to the ROMS. For example, these vendors MUST insure that the boards will run
System 7, or they will quickly be out of business.

Subject: Third Party Accelerators and System 7.0 Compatibility

I (like most everybody else) am looking to put an accelerator
into my SE. I also have questions like most everybody else but have not
seen this one brought up yet.

Will there be any problems with System 7.0 and third party
accelerators? Most accelerators (if not all?) require a ROM swap with
the original motherboard of the machine. My concern is that there might
exist processor specific code in the ROM's on the larger 020 and 030
machines that is used to control the MMU and the fancier features of
the advanced architectures. If so, then if System 7.0 relies on these
features exclusively through ROM routines then my 030 accelerator would
be no better than a super fast 68000 as far as 7.0 is concerned.

Is this really a problem? Might Apple provide patches with
an installer script to put the necessary routines in the system file
if this kind of situation were detected? Would the third parties
come out with patches?

Please reply directly (I don't have time to read info-mac
regularly) and I'll summarize later.
