Subject: "printer manager help"

Greetings net-people.

I am currently taking a course in which I get to pick a software project
to design and implement. I have decided to do something which would
involve re-writing the printing manager and printer driver. In a nut shell,
I am looking for information about various aspects of both which would be
important to the project. One of the over-all goals is to have a
PICT file on disk produced as a result of selecting Print. I understand
that catching the information after it has been mangled by the manager
is too late, because by that time the information has been changed into
a bitmap.

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies, you will get honorable mention!

Subject: 3270 Emulation for the Mac

Brown's tn3270 for the Macintosh is available by using anonymous FTP
to brownvm.brown.edu, and from LISTSERV@BROWNVM over BITNET. Using
anonymous FTP, retrieve the file tn3d16.sithqx, or the three files
tn3d16.1sithqx3 through tn3d16.3sithqx3. Over BITNET, send LISTSERV
the three commands:
     get tn3d16.1sithqx3
     get tn3d16.2sithqx3
     get tn3d16.3sithqx3
These files must be combined, then unBinHexed, and unStuffed. The
resulting set of files includes both the NCSA and MacTCP versions of
tn3270.

Anybody knows about field biologists who store their data on
vegetation, birds.... in a well-structured manner in a database ?
Friends from (Dutch) governmental organisations report an enormous

In my last posting (regarding problems transferring BinHex over Kermit),
I made two mistakes regarding the way IRMA translates the left-bracket
character:

1) The left-bracket is mistranslated as a _close_-single quote, not an
open single quote as I said earlier.

2) The key that produces this character is option-} (_not_ option-').

Sorry for any confusion that may have caused!

Subject: DeskWriter and LocalTalk ?

Hi All,

Recently, I've noted references in various Trade Ads for new
"LocalTalk-compatible" HP DeskWriters. I also saw a reference in the Digest
a month or so ago about an updated (Version 2) DeskWriter driver.

Can anyone shed any light on whether the two references are
equivalent; i.e. would the new driver make an original non-networkable
DeskWriter networkable (after all, the original DW is equipped with an
RS-422A, as opposed to RS-232 interface). Failing that, would a ROM change
to the DW do the trick?

It would seem strange if HP hadn't thought ahead to LocalTalk
operation when they originally reworked the DeskJet for the Mac market.

Cheers,

We just had a demo of the new Tek Phaser postscript colour printer - very
impressive, as easy to use as a B&W Laserwriter, and can print from Mac

themselves because the Mac system (Laserwriter-6 and 32-bit quickdraw)
automatically convert the output to PS.

The printer can be connected by EtherNet and RS232 to our Vax network, and can
accept files simultaneously with those coming in on AppleTalk. Great. But most
of our Vax applications, and the Vax system, don't create colour postscript

Subject: SCSI woes

Apple, in its wisdom, requires new SCSI terminators for the IIfx.
Okay, I can live with that, especially since Apple sent one with the
   computer.
To connect an external hard drive (which I want to do only occasionally)
to the IIfx I must disconnect the internal SCSI terminator.
Okay, I can live with that, in spite of the fact that the manual gives
no indication of how to do this. (Cutting Edge 45Meg) The tech
support at Ehman which makes the drive gave me clear instructions on
   how to disconnect the terminator.
All that is left is to attach an external SCSI terminator of the new type
that Apple, in its wisdom, specifies.
I cannot live with this last one! Both SCSI connectors on my drive
are 25 pin, just like the ones on the back of the Mac. All SCSI
connectors are (evidently) 50 pin! I have checked with my local
dealer and with MacConnection. They don't have them. I have checked
with Cutting Edge and they don't have them! (There in is a story in
itself. My Cutting Edge drive comes with an Ehman manual. I can live
with that. Ehman packages the drive for Cutting Edge and provides
tech support. I call Ehman (there's a handy 800 number in there adverts)
about the problem and to complain and they politely tell me that I am
barking up the wrong tree. Call Cutting Edge instead. (In fact, I did
not realize that they were separate companies. How separate are they?))

So what's a fellow to do? Does anyone know of a source of the {NEW
SCSI connect that fits a 25 pin connector? Any other solutions?

So... next time you buy a drive, consider the size of the connectors and
how easy/hard it is to remove the internal terminator (if there is one).

Subject: Stella

        Hello all,

I am building some HyperCard stacks with a professor that require
some simulations. I have chosen Stella and Stella Stack software to do
the task, but find the included manuals to be inadequate. Does anyone
know of any books or information that I can acccess?

Any comments or help would be much appreciated.

Subject: Sys 6.0.5 vs. MacWrite 4.6

Any known problems between the old MacWrite 4.6 and System 6.0.5
(perhaps reminiscent of the problems with early WingZ)? We're trying
to isolate some parameter-file trashing elsewhere, and know that the
WingZ problem could cause memory to get messed up and trash what got
rewritten out to disk as parameter files were read in and updated back
out...

Please don't ask why we're still using 4.6 (-: .

Subject: Tech notes

There are many things that you would think are true that aren't. You
would think, for example, that apple.com has available the latest tech note
stack. You would think that they also could provide a complete set of the
latest tech notes in MacWrite format. Neither is exactly true.
They do have a stack, but I have an even more recent one, april '90
or version 3.3. Also, they have the august '90 updater but no other
updaters (I'm talking macwrite here) for the year 1990! Thus you can get
an earlier set of notes from them, but you can't fully update it as you won't
have most of 1990's changes.
Is there someone out there who has either the august 1990 stack or
all of the notes up to either June 1990 or August 1990 and would be willing
to send them to me? I know it would be a large file, but all you have to do
is dump them into a folder and stuff the folder, binhex, lick stamp, and
use the correct email address :). Many thanks to anyone who can help, and
if I do get the notes this way, other ppl who wish them can get copies form
me (for a while anyway as I would eventually have to delete the file from my
account).

Subject: Thanks, and another question...

Thanks to all the people who responded about my HyperCard question.
I should have expected that it won't work with monitors set to more
than two colors. How annoying...

My other question is for a friend. He wants to know if there is a
version of Laserwriter 6.0 that defaults to black/white, not color
printing. He has a textronix laser and an NTX, and he keeps forgetting
to push the black/white button when he prints to the NTX (and that gives
him an ID=01 error). Anyone know how to set the default in the print box?

All help appreciated! I like getting 17 mail messages in one day!

Hello,

A while ago I was given a list of ftp sites containing macintosh
software. One of the biggest 'treasure-troves' I found was at
uiuc.edu, under /mac/MUG. Apparantly this directory was a repository
for all files accumulated by the Champaign-Urbana Macintosh Users
Group. Unfortunately, as you may have guessed by my usage of the past
tense, all the files appear to have been last updated in about May of
1989. Does anyone know if they moved to another spot, or any info
this mystery?

Respond to me via E-mail <PET101@UKCC.UKY.EDU>, and I'll report back
to the list.

Thanks,
Jamer

Subject: Unexplained system crashes

In InfomacV8#152, someone mentioned strange bombs when using SigmaEdit,
altho not always. I had exactly the same troubles with any version
over the early 1.1 version. Any version above that one seemed to cause
me problems. I re-installed the 1.1 version, remembering never to open the
"about" screen, and the problems go away.

This has been on a Plus with 1, 2.5 and 4 megs, and various levels of
the system.
