Subject: [*] "spconfig_reset 1.1"

This program resets the serial port configuration byte in the Parameter
RAM. Some programs (including the MIDI Manager) can leave this byte set
incorrectly, which causes the serial drivers to report a hardware problem.
The current PRAM Zapper in the control panel does NOT reset this byte.

This program is in the public domain. No rights are reserved.
This is version 1.1. New features from 1.0: shows an alert
 describing what has been fixed.
The name "spconfig_reset" is somewhat obscure. Perhaps a better name
should be chosen. (like serial-port-fix or something)
Probably should be filed under COMM or UTIL

Subject: BIBLIOGRAPHIES FOR HISTORIANS

I am a historian who is converting to a Mac SE/30 HD40 CPU after many happy
years with a Kaypro II on which I used a filing program called Superfile that
now contains nearly 2000 bibliographical entries that can be sorted and
combined with keywords. Can anyone suggest a program for my new Mac that will
allow me to do something similar? I expect to have to convert the files by
hand or individually, but I haven't a clue as to whether such a program
exists. To the extent that I understand it, I am not so much interested in a
program like ENDNOTE, which allows one to automatically place bibliographical
references in a text, but in a program that allows me to print out all books
and articles having to do with, say, women's history or religious history,
etc.

Re Gann Matsuda's note that he has heard of problems with Apple's IIci
cache card (vol. 157): MacWeek reports that Apple says that a bad batch
of parts was used in mass production of the cards and currently there's
a hold on shipping them. But a lot of bad cards were shipped before the
problem surfaced.

Meanwhile, Technology Works has come out with a card for $299, and UR Micro
has reduced the cost of its card to $259. The Daystar card can be got mail
order for about $300. Prices could go even lower if Apple tries to recapture
market share once it's got its problems sorted out.

If that's a busy public IIci, the desktop file may have grown beyond

Subject: Fast Formatter Comment & Advice Sought on AUX Comms

In Digest 155 Gann Matsuda reckoned that Fast Formatter 3.0 wouldn't
handle 1.44 Mb discs. I downloaded this program from Sumex and have
used it repeatedly to format batches of 1.44 discs - no problems.

I've got my hands on an AUX 2 system here for a while and I'm very
impressed. Although not all current Mac applications are 32 bit clean,
they still seem to run fine in the Multifinder shell under AUX and most
seem to run faster. Cutting and pasting between applications and e.g. the
Unix command shell works OK. I haven't got the manuals and I'm scratching
my head hard to remember my Unix, but everything seems to be there with
the added advantage of a Mac help facility (commando) which gives you
a dialog box type window for unix commands so that you can click and
select the options you want. My main interest at the moment is on the
communications side and I'd appreciate comments/advice from those of
you with experience on the following:

  i) An AUX system seems to route between ethernet and localtalk OK
(for printing anyway). How could I use this to share files on
say a localtalk network running TOPS with nfs machines on the
ethernet - is a Sun with the TOPS/nfs gateway stuff needed now,
do I have nfs in AUX and if so can I use it on the localtalk side.
AUX seems to do what 'Internet Router' and 'Liaison' do and may
even come close to a 'Fastpath', 'Gatorbox' or 'Multigate' but
the specifics are unclear to me !

ii) There seems to be a lot of ethernet cards out there - not all
are phase II appletalk and few have the AUX drivers. Has anyone
looked at them and worked out how important these 2 factors are.

iii) Finally I'd appreciate comments on the X-windows option for AUX.
Is it stable, can I really have a command shell window, X-windows,
and ordinary Mac application windows all on the screen at the same
time and cut and paste between them !

Many thanks in anticipation and I'll summarise back to the net if I get
some answers.

Subject: HC2.0 goes to Claris

Reading CIS tonight, I learned that Apple has sold HyperCard 2.0 to
Claris. A "run-time" package of HC2.0 will continue to be bundled with
every new Mac, and Claris will sell and support a "developers" version
of HC2.0. Evidently the official press release indicated that until the
start of the new year, all distribution agreements that Apple had formed
with BBSs, usergroups etc. would be honoured, although whether this
would be for a "run-time" vs. "development" version wasn't clear.
Shipping will start in November, and there will be an upgrade option
offered by Claris. Prices not announced, but expect a price increase.

Subject: How do I add mathematical characters to a menu ?

I'm writing a statistics application; I'd like to have fancy mathematica
l
characters in my menus. The most straightforward way is, I think, to write
a custom MDEF, that allows to use different fonts. I would rather not do
this, because
        1) I'd like to keep things simple if I can
        2) I'm not sure wether MacApp, that I use, would like it. (version 2.0b9
)

So I thought to modify the Chicago font in order to add the few characters
I need, and add this modified font to my application's resource fork. This
way the modified font gets loaded instead of the system one, and my menus
look OK.

The question is: is this a safe thing to do? Will it break my application
on new machines or new system software ? Can you suggest a better way?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Right now we're using VersaTerm PRO, which emulates a tek

I've got a professor here who wants to connect an existing LaserJet Series

They tell me that a Grappler LX will do this. Anyone know for sure? And does

Oh. The connecting wire between that Mac and the printer will be about 50

I have recd to following tip from the states and thought it worth passing
 around:-
 ==============

Here's a LaserWriter 6.0.x tip you may want to pass on. Paul Cozza (author of
SAM anti-virus utilities) came up with a patch to the LaserWriter color driver
to set B/W as the default rather than color. This speeds up most printing and I
can personally attest for the reliability with both 6.0, 6.0.1 & 6.0.2.

Using Fedit (or any other sector editor), search the LaserWriter system file
for the hexadecimal string (Don't enter the spaces. I only put them there to
 ease readability):

     377C 0017 0004 7801
     377C 0018 0004 7801

This will change the radio button default to B&W.

Feel free to distribute this patch around the UK. It really is a nice tip.

 Regards,
 Eric

I am looking for is a custom or patched LaserWriter
Plus printer driver, or a custom chooser program.
Our Apple LaserWriter is only supposed to be used

only people with the proper password to "choose"

configure it to where you can choose other printers

Subject: PC-MAC interconnects: Diskette & Laser printer

Hello Netland!

I need some advice. I need connectivity between a Wells-American A*Star (286
with a Netbios, 2 5.25" (360KB & 1.2MB) diskette drives, a bus mouse, and 2
comm ports in use) and a Mac II or IIx (video card, 2 page monitor of some
as yet undetermined type). The issues are:

    A.	Sharing data (probably EXCEL, WORD, and Powerpoint). By the
way, I also need to add a 3.5" diskette drive to my AT (which
	already has a 5.25" 360KB and a 5.25" 1.2MB drive).

    B.	Sharing a laser printer. Use are:
PC:	Printing of labels, listings (landscape)
MAC:	Printing of slides, documents, graphics, charts

My questions are:

    1.	For Issue A: From my understanding, a Mac (with some help?)
can read a IBM formatted 3.5" diskette. What
do I need to do to get that diskette drive into
my AT? Assuming that I buy some sort of external
cabinet for the drive, can I operate all 3 drives?
Will I need a new BIOS (given that this BIOS already
			knows about 3.5 720 & 1.44 diskettes)?

    2.	For Issue B: What kind of laser printer would be capable of
serving both worlds? What kind of interface
would it need? Cards in each machine? Is there
a need for some type of A/B switch?

    3.	For BOTH:	Am I better off with a LAN? Shared printer buffer
device? What is involved in installing those?

I would be grateful for any and all help you can provide. As you can see,
it's quite a diverse problem.

Thanks,

George

Subject: Postscript Help File

Hi, does anyone out there have the 'Postscript.help' file from
Cricket Draw. I just downloaded a DA called PSHelp (operates like the
Inside Mac DA) and learned that it needs the other file to work. If
anyone could upload it to the archives I would very much appreciate it.

                                Thanks, Brad (the son)

BiPlane 1.01 is in the info-mac archive (and the shadow archive --
MACSERVE@PUCC). That's where I got my copy. I liked it, so I sent the
$40 shareware fee to Alan Porter and he sent me a helpful manual and
a copy of version 1.03 (with some handy new features).

If you're like me and you want a spreadsheet primarily for an occasional
table (to cut & paste into a word processor perhaps) and haven't a
need for macros and graphics, then BiPlane is one heck of a deal for the
(very few compared to the alternatives) $$$.

Subject: Two Questions for Programmers

  Hi,

I'm currently writing my first game for the Mac and I ran into
  two problems.

  1) I know how to change cursors (GetCursor, etc.) but how can I make the
cursor change automatically when it passes over items on the screen?
What I want to do is similar to the arrow changing to the I_Beam
     over filenames in the Finder.

  2) I open a large picture and want to implement scrolling. I already
implemented the "thumb" scroll successfully, I already know how to
handle the change of origin, the change of clip region, etc. What
I can't do is the arrow and page scroll because TrackControl
passes control to a ProcPtr variable pointing to my procedure.
How do I link my Pascal routine to a ProcPtr variable?

Hope my inquiries are clear to everyone. Thank you for any help
  you can give me.

  Dennis

I have the same problem (starting with 11.04). I would appreciate a posting
to the net, or a copy by email.

I suspect that many of us need these updates. Perhaps Scott Watson would
authorize posting of a complete set.
