In August, I requested information from the list on experiences
with notebook computers and "data buckets" and their use with the
macintosh. Well, finally, I have edited the responses I received
and am submitting this information for anyone who is interested.
I makes for a long posting, so you might want to archive it as
a short "report". Each response is reproduced as received (with
opinions of the author in place).

In light of this information, I bought a Tandy WP-2 portable

Here is the Sound Mover Package written by Riccardo Ettore. This
is a Font/DA Mover type application for playing/editing various
types of sounds. In additon to the standard 'snd ' resources
Sound Mover recognizes the following:
The file types known to Sound Mover are:
- Crystal Quest* Sounds (QSSN fdType, SMSD resourceType)
- World Builder* (DEAD fdType, ASND resourceType)
- Dark Castle* data (dc2d fdType, SOUN resourceType)
- Beyond Dark Castle* data (DCFL fdType, SOUN resourceType)
- QuarterStaff* (OZY2 fdType, 'wave' resourceType)
- Gauntlet* (GANT fdType, GSND resourceType)
- HyperCard Stacks (STAK fdType, 'snd ' resourceType)
- Jam Session/Studio Session instrument files (DEWF fdType, sound
in data fork).
- SoundCap/SoundWave/SoundEdit files (FSSD fdType, sound in data
fork).
Sound Mover can convert any of these types into a 'snd ' resource
and can take a 'snd ' resource and create a data file. Also
included in the package are StartupSndInit 1.4, an init that
plays sounds at startup; SndControl 1.0.4, a cdev that allows you
to attach sounds to various actions (like Sound Master) but
System 6.04 or later is required; IBeep2 2.31 is a cdev that
allows the sytem beep to be modified on Mac Pluses and SE using
System 4.1 or later.

This package is shareware at $ 20.00 and includes a comprehensive
manual.

Do you know of any intelligent, knowledge-based, and/or expert system
applications on the Macintosh? These can be commercial, internal or research
(company or university). I'm not interested in tools per se (though I am
interested in whether you used Lisp, Prolog, C or an ES shell), but more in
which applications have been or are being built on Macs with the tools. We
know of some (e.g., those shown at Apple's AAAI 90 open house), but we'd like
to know of more. Why? To get a sense of where the field is going, make
connections between similar efforts, point to success stories, etc. Also, I'm
considering editing a special issue of an AI journal on Mac applications, and
would like to generate more possible topics/projects/authors.

I have a friend in Australia who is looking for a HyperCard stack,
which could be used as "a front end to a test generating system in
mathematics and statistics". Basically, the idea is to set up a
data base of questions, along with answers (and solutions), that
can be tapped by academic staff to generate paper based take away

Does anyone know of an existing Shareware or commercial stack to do

Last summer I bought a MagicView 19" (1024 x 768) from MacProducts for my
SE/30. At the time, the $999 price was by far the best on the market (now
the same monitor costs $899, I think). The first one which arrived had a
crack in the case, but was otherwise fully functional. Nevertheless, I
figured that for $999 I shouldn't have a cracked monitor, so I called
MacProducts to ask for an exchange. No problem. I sent the cracked case
monitor back and about 2 and 1/2 weeks later, recieved a new one. I find
the brightness and focus fine for extended work and I'm very happy with the
screen. The only problem I've noticed is that when the monitor is first
turned on, the picture isn't exactly centered. After about two minutes of
warming up, everything is fine. Overall, I'm happy with the screen and I'd
buy it again from MacProducts.

Subject: Generating PostScript Files

I'm having trouble getting Postscript files to print on our LaserWriter llNT.
The files in question are being generated by a Mac SE/30. I need to create post
script files rather than printing out from within the application because the o
wner of the original document wants to print out to a LaserWriter from a VAX.

I've tried various methods of creating PS files - Command-F, Command-K, Option-
F and Option-K. I've also tried printing to disk using 'MyPageSetup' and modify
the output files using AddLPrep. Each time I tried downloading the r
esulting files to the LaserWriter (using FontDownLoader v.3.30) I repeatedly
got error messages about unknown commands.

The original document is a Word 4.0 document. Though I have since tried produci
ng PS files from MacWrite documents and the same thing happens.

Can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong. I'm using v. 6.0.2 of LaserWrit
er Prep and the LaserWriter printer driver.

Thanks in advance for any suggestion you might have.

Subject: Hard Drive Blues

I have owned my Macintosh SE/30 for approximately a year now. During my
second term last year, my FDHD went bad (as other people are reporting), and
the entire thing was replaced under AppleCare (phew!). Now, in my first
term this year, my hard drive is making a very strange noise, which I will
now attempt to describe:

For a normally quiet hard drive (40Mb), it will begin to make a strange
noise like the head on the drive is rubbing against something on every
revolution. The drive light, however, does not appear and I assume therefore
that this has nothing to do with actual read/write capabilities. The sound
can be removed by performing some action which requires disk recognition
(sometimes this means closing a window, other times I have to open the
control panel or a DA like Locate/Find File).

Worse yet, I am not able to duplicate the sound under just "any" conditions:
the sound comes and goes and seems to have no apparent cosistency or
continuity.

I took the drive in over the summer to see if it could be found, but the
people at the AppleCare place said they couldn't hear anything. In the endm,
all they did was replace an out-of-date ROM chip in the drive. This has
not made the problem go away, and it seems to be getting slowly worse.

Help PLEASE!!

Subject: HD Loading & DeskJet...

Hi friends,

I posted a question on why the HD doesn't load after the power-on of the MAC.
I have got a couple of msg reporting the same problem, unfortunately, there
were no msg provide a local solution to solve the problem. Somebody suggested
that I check with the dealer to find the Quantum-provided serial numbers and
see if this unit belongs to the BAD group for free fix. Well, I tried. The
local dealer refuse to say anything that was not sold by them or not came with
the Mac (which means the Apple version of Quantum HDs). So I called the mail
order company in California (MacDirect) and their tech person did not provide
any information on the free fix batch either.

One other friend suggested that some Quantum drives have lub problems (the
disk was too sticky to spin). However, this also requires sending the HD to
the dealer or to Quantum. (Sorry for the friend who said that he has been
using a SuperMac HD that has the same problem, all those suggestions are for
Quantum drives).

Well, my solution: The salesperson told me that they didn't have Quantum
in stock to replace one for me, but they did have the same size Fujitsu drives.
"They are slightly slower than the Quantum, but not very much," the guy went,
"the Quantum has a seek time of 19ms and the Fujitsu has a seek time of 20ms."
Because I needed the drive very badly for my project, I accepted the replacement
t. Result: the Fujitsu 45 has an average seek time of 26ms. For the urgent
demand of my project, I sacrificed 10 Mb of data, 20 Mb of software (I had to
reinstall them), and got a MUCH slower drive --- not happily ever thereafter.

--------
I have another question here: I saw an ad on the paper that the HP DeskJet for
the DOS machines are below $500. How come that the Mac version are still over
$800? I searched the Infomac Help topics but did not find anything about this
, although a friend of mine said that there has been discussions on the net.
Can anybody give me an direction to find the info? Thanks.

Jack.

Subject: Laser Printer formatting w/o LaserPrinter in chooser

Hello,

We at Haverford College have restricted access to our laser printers (on
an AppleShare network with AppleShare print spooler) by removing the Laser
Printer printer driver from the choosers of all but a few machines. This
means that users can only print to the laser printer from a few machines -
the rest of the machines can access an ImageWriter.
We've run into a problem - users frequently format their papers (esp.
resumes) on these machines with imagewriter print drivers, then go over to
the printer macs to use the laser printer, and discover that their formatting
has all gone out the window.
Does anybody know of a way to allow users to format their papers for the
laser printer without actually being able to PRINT to the laser printer?
We've tried putting the LaserWriter SC (we have NT/NTX's) in the chooser,
but that does not have the same specifications as the NT/NTX, so we still have
problems. We have thought about taking the Macs attached to LaserPrinters off
of the network, but that would entail buying lots of extra software to stick on
the printer mac so that users could laser print from all of our software (and
not just the stuff for which we have site licenses).
We've tried hooking the laser printer to the printer mac via the SCSI
port (no go) and the RS-232 port (no go either).

Any and all suggestions are welcome, and if there's enough interest, I'll
summarize to the Net.

Thanks....

One way to do this without specialized spooler software is to modify
the LaserWriter file with ResEdit. Of course, you should use the usual
precautions whenever you use a dangerous utility like ResEdit.

Open the LaserWriter file from Resedit, and open DITL -8191. Then
change the editable text item that contains the number of copies to
make to a static text item (it already contains a 1, the default number
of copies).

Your users will no longer be able to specify multiple copies on a
single print job.

Subject: Mathematica, Contour plot and DECstation.

Hello InfoMac,

I have one answer for Tom, and two questions for all of you.

(1) Although I'm not an experienced Mathematica user I think I know the
answer to tom's problem with Mathematica (InfoMac issue 169). When you
want to plot points with Mathematica the command is ListPlot.
- ListPlot[{y1, y2, ...}] plots a list of values, the x coordinates for
each point are taken to be 1, 2, ...
- ListPlot[{{x1, y1}, {x2, y2}, ...}] plots a list of values with
specified x and y coordinates. The Plot[] command generates a plot of
one or more functions. (See Mathematica: A System for Doing Mathematics
by Computer, by Stephen Wolfram, Addison-Wesley Publishing Company Inc.,
1989. An excellent book!)

(2) Does anyone known a good program to create contour-plots from a grid
on a Macintosh SE? There is only something in info-mac for a Mac II, and
a very old program that corrupts the input files.

(3) Does anyone known if it is possible to mount DECstation disks on a
Macintosh with FDHD drive, just the same way as I can do with MS/DOS
disks? Apple's file exchange utility doesn't recognize the disk format.
(With DECstation disks I mean, 3.5" disks formatted on a Digital
DECstation 2100. It is possible to format to 720K and 1.44M, but none of
these are MS/DOS format).

Subject: Russian Fonts Wanted

Several years ago, someone posted a Russian Font (actually Cyrilic). At
the time, I used it for some letters, but then discarded it. I now need
a Russian font again, but do not see one on sumex or wuarchive
(Stalingrad uses Russian-like symbols to make Roman letters). Is there a
publically accessable Russian font? Are there any good Russian fonts
that I can purchase?

Subject: Sound Manager Crashes

Concerning the mysterious crashes from NCSA Telnet & Hypercard:

The real culprit is the Sound Manager. System 6.0.6 which is to be released
today with the new machines, should fix this problem.

The bug is that applications in the background who make noise at the same time
as applications in the foreground cause a crash. Hypercard 1.2.5 is
constantly playing silence, so it is making noise (albeit quietly). When
Telnet beeps, things go into the weeds. Theoretically, 6.0.5 included a fix
for this, but all it did was turn the volume off for the guys in the
background. It was still a hack and there were ways around it.

Running Hypercard 2.0 seems to work with 6.0.5 but I'm betting on 6.0.6 to fix
this nasty bug. Maybe I'll use Finder Sounds again then.

Hi netters,
A while back someone posted a small DA (or was it a util?) that
allowed black&white recording to a home VCR from a MAC II with the addition of
a special cable which was described in the Readme file. It was called
something like MAC-II-VIDEO or MAC-II-VCR, but I can't seem to locate it
lately. Does anyone still have it (if it has been purged from the archives)
or recall the right name for it? As usual I didn't need it then, but
I need it now. Thanks! John Daspit, Univ. of Colorado. DASPIT@COLOLASP

Subject: Virtual Memory?

I noticed a product from Connectix called Virtual 2.0 advertised in the October
issue of Macuser (p.270). According to the ad, the hard disk can be used with
system 6.x to give additional RAM without installing SIMMs.
Does anyone have any experience with this product? It offers 14 megs of RAM
at less than the cost of 4 megs.

Subject: Zterm Downloding from VAX

   Hello All,
I have a problem with downloading from the VAX (6800-10) that the
University uses to my Macintosh SE With Zterm 0.85. I am not sure if the way
I am downloading is causing the problem or not.
If I download a small file (approx 3 blocks) the Zterm Downloads fine,
however when I move to a higher sized file, the Zterm gives me Several Data CRC
Errors which shut down the downloading process before it really even begins!
    I am on, I beleive a VAX 6800 - 10 (1 CPU),connected at 2400 baud, and the
Protocol on the VAX's side is "SZ 3.03 5-09-89 for VMS by Chuck Forsberg,
OwenTechnology Inc." and my Progtam is the Zterm 0.85 available. (FTP from
Sumex-aim)
Any Ideas? Ideas would be very appreciated. (Maybe need a upgrade on the
VAX's protocol prog?) Oh yes, and the Program Uploads the files to the VAX just
fine. The only problem is in downloading.

                                     Many thanks ahead of time,
