Or more specifically what else do I need? Or will it not really possible with this setup? (i.e. Do I have the wrong film recorder?) If it has, please just direct me to when and where it has been answered. My question is fairly simple: I'm contemplating writing an INIT, but I can not find *any* documentation about how to write an INIT that will start up, and then do periodic things in the background. The sample code I've seen shows how to write an INIT that will start up, do it's work, and then die, (and thus allow the system to continue), but I've seen nothing about becomming a permanent resident during that Mac session. I took a class last year in which we used Authorware Professional (I think the difference is that video and movie-type animation are supported) to create educational software for local high schools. I was able to write a program in Authorware to convert between Mayan, Egyptian, Roman, and Arabic number systems without _too_ much trouble. With the help of some scanned-in David Macauley drawings, we created a tutorial that got some interest beyond the class for which we designed it. Not much, I admit, but some.... :-) I can't compare it to Hypercard--I've never programmed in it and infrequently used it. Some other things we did in the tutorial: Allowed the student to build the Roman number XXIV by dragging down the numerals, and gave substantial feedback at each stage Allowed the student to rearrange the Egyptian numbers on the screen to point out that it was the same number, no matter what order Quizzed the student on numbers in the various systems, and gave them feedback corresponding to how close they were: For example, if they answered 26 when asked what XXIV was, we could point out that that was close and explain what the problem with the answer was. >I have the Authorware Academic package and am impressed. The >documentation is the best I have ever seen. You would think that >a PhD in Education wrote it (I understand that 3 did). The only problem is, it gets repetitive when it explains how to do things in two different locations. I don't think I had any questions I couldn't figure out from the documentation eventually, except when it came time to bundle it. It wasn't quite clear that part of the program had to be bundled with the RunCOA module if you didn't have a copy handy. (If the program hadn't had so many graphics in it, we might have kept it smaller than 800K :-) >In contrast to Hypercard, it is easy to see were you are as you write >the program ("write" and "program" are loosely used). You draw a map showing the flow of control. This was hard for me to deal with, at first. To construct what I wanted to be an IF-THEN-ELSE statement, I had to nest decision icons about 9 deep. > >Authorware can do a lot and many >capabilities mean more things to learn. While the manuals are >great for teaching how to do it, you need time to put it all >together. I'm still working at it but could probably learn most >in a week of concentrated effort (who has a week to spare B-) ) Ditto :-) This was a very interesting course, btw--the professor almost never lectured. Instead we had lots of guest speakers--Ted Sizer, of the Coalition for Essential Schools, and several people involved with software development. We also had a field trip to the MIT Media Lab, to hear about the LEGO-LOGO project. Interesting stuff.... --------------------- "But oh! When I try to access certain cards, I get an alert with "Can't read card or background id 31724 at location 5112" followed by HyperCard exiting. Any ideas as to the cause or remedy? The two particular cards I notice this behavior on are both near the bottom of the stack and both have a scrolling text field that is fuller than any other cards in the stack (the stack is used to keep track of referees of journal articles). This behavior happens when I try to either "find" a char string on one of these cards or when I try to sort the stack. Reply to me or to the digest, I read both often. Craig R. When marking a message/group/subject as unread, getting error "Expected end of line after 'end if'." 2. When quiting the stack getting error "Can't understand arguments of 'CautionAlert'." Since HyperCard 2.0 does not give me scripting privileges, I can't even take a look at the script to see what is wrong. Has any one else had these problems, and has found a fix? The point I'm getting at here is that some software won't work with IIsi at thispoint in time. I could not get Excel 2.2 and PixelPaint pro to work. From the rumors, I hear that Microsoft is working on Excel 3.0. I hope it's available soon since I'd like to see how much faster the program would work with a FPU chip installed. Excel 3.0 is supposed to fix this problem as well as add a lot of features available in Wingz and in Full Impact. I guess Mr. Gates is feeling some heat ? Also how about sticking to the Mac guidelines this time, so when a new Mac comes out ( like the SE/40 or the Tower Mac ) then your program will still work. BTW Excel 3.0 should be out when system 7.0 comes around. For now Microsoft will probably issue a maintenance release like 2.2c ? or 2.3 ? Anyways, if I have to follow Mac guidelines , why can't the big guys do the same ? I am keeping some of the statistics for a hockey team, which include shots taken, goals, assists, etc. for each player and for the team as well as some graphic information - where on the ice was each shot taken from. For numerical data, I use Excel which works just fine. To track information about where each shot is taken from, I am using Canvas 2.1. I have created a base layer that has a representation of the hockey rink. For each game, I add a layer to the document containing the location of each shot (a little 'x'). By printing one or more layers, I can show the shot locations >From one or more games. My question is - how can I do statistics, e.g. what % of shots came from the left? or from behind the blue line? Has the shot distribution changed during the season? during the course of a game? etc. One way I can see to do this is to divide the rink into a series of zones and then place the shot count for each zone (for each game) into Excel. This would mean counting all the little x's for each zone for each game and then entering the results into Excel. It strikes me that there must be a better way to do this. Any suggestions? I'm glad to see this discussion re- opened. Right now, I'm doing some casual research into how people use grammar checkers and would like to ask the network users for their help. At Bemidji State University, we occasionally teach students how to use a grammar and style checker as a way of helping them gain more control over their sentence level writing problems. Sometimes it's helpful, sometimes not. There's also a lot of academic-level speculation in articles on how to use grammar checkers and how *not* to use them, and on why they are Good Things, and why the are not Good Things. But there's nothing like finding out how people who actually use the programs really *do* use them and what they see as the virtues and drawbacks of the beasts. What I'm asking is this: To help us teach the use of grammar checkers in college-level writing courses, and to help us teach soon-to-be-teachers how to deal with grammar checkers, I would appreciate your True Stories on using (and abusing?) the programs. I'm asking how you *really* use the things: What kind of writing or situations you use them for; how you use them (do you take the advice or not); if you find them helpful or a hinderance or something else entirely; if you find them friendly or not-so-friendly; what's frustrating about them and what makes it worth putting up with through the frustration, and so on. If you would, please take a few minutes to tell me how you use a grammar checker in your day-to-day work. A list of questions follows; you can use this to jog your mind, but please don't confine yourself to the questions, and don't feel you have to deal with every one of them. Post your notes to be directly so not to jam the net; I'll summarize responses and post them. Send to MMORGAN@BGSUOPIE.BITNET. That is a Bowling Green State University address; I'm not currently at Bemidji State (and believe me, if you've been there, you would think twice about it :-)) NB: Spelling and grammar *does not count*! Questions to consider: What program do you usually use? (eg MacProof, Sensible Grammar, etc) For what kind of writing do you use it? Professional stuff? Term papers? Letters to Mom? and so on. Did you have any training in using the program, or did you pick it up from the manual? (You *did* read the manual, didn't you?) What frustrations/problems/difficulties do you find in using it? This could be both interface problems and checker-problems. What successes have you had with it? Where do you think it really helps? What have you learned from using it that you might not have if you never touched it? What are its limits, as you see it? What *can't* it do for you? Any particularly obnoxious interface problems in the checker you use? Any particularly wonderful interface features in the checker you use? Are their any particular features in the checkers you've used that you find particularly useful? What advice would you give to other who are beginning to use them? What do you *really* want to see in a grammar checker? Any thing else to add? Thanks for the help, people. At the moment they are still being shipped with System 6.0.6 to the UK. This is not too mush of a problem for me since I was able to download 6.0.7 from Apple.com. So far I am quite impressed with my Classic. Its almost the same as an SE with regards speed. The front of the machine has been redesigned so that the speaker ports and vents are now at the sides of the machine and underneath the shelf at the front (Similar to a plus). The 40M internal hard disk is exceptionally quietSo quiet that I thought it had broken at first. It make the disk on a IIcx soundlike a road drill. My only critism in respect of the HD is that there is now access light. This makes it difficult sometimes to tell if a program has crashedor whatever. Other people have mentioned that Macintalk was now an Obsolete piece of code nowthat Apple has introduced the System 7 sound manager into 6.0.6 and 6.0.7. This doesn't seem to be the case since I have managed to get macintalk to work fine under both 6.0.6 and 6.0.7.\ There have been a few programs which have refused to work under 6.0.7 though. One of these is SoundEdit. When I try to run this I get an UNIMPLEMENTED TRAP ERR.I also have some INITs which now case problems where non (6.0.5) existed before on an SE that I also have. These include MacWrite refusing to run when SuperClock is loaded. Other INITs such as SoundMaster 1.5 seem to run without any problems at all under the new sound Manager. The other worry for new owners may be the use of Hypercard and its various versions Untill last week I was unaware that HC 1.2.2 wouldn't run under 6.0.5 which is strange since I have been using it for about two months without any problems! I have also been using HC 1.2.2. with sys 6.0.7 for a week now without any trouble. Maybe you have to be doing something really sophisticated like using XCMDs before problems arise. Roll on HC 2.0. ( Should be getting my free copy any day now) The only other critism I have with the Classic Is that memory upgrade require an add-on board since the RAM that comes with the machine is soldered into the board!
