I have ever seen a printer driver just for this purpose one year ago,
but I didn't care that driver at that time, Can some one tell me what is its

I downloaded CTerm from the info-mac archives to my IIci. On
execution the application says the "communications toolbox" (available
>From APDA) is required. OOps!

It's not clear from reading the text supplied with the program what it
does that MacKermit (free) doesn't do. Perhaps, it will support color
ANSI? As far as I know, to get the color support supplied with Yale's
YTerm emulation, the terminal has to identify as "IBMPC" (which may not
be a problem as that emulation works with TinCan, but no color). The
notes don't mention any file transfer protocol at all :-(

Subject: Does anyone know SoftPC for 68000?

Hello, people!

I have to write a couple of (non-time-critical) programs for MS-DOS. Neither
do I own such a machine, nor do I want to buy one and I don't like the idea
of borrowing one and occupying space on my desk.

So for me the solution seems to buy a SoftPC, which, rumors are going, is
now available for machines with just a 68000 CPU, and run it on my wacky
MacPlus.

Before I start the job of ordering one in the States, is there anybody out
there who uses this program and can tell me about his/her experience. I
would especially appriciate comments on speed, practicability, memory-usage,
multi-finder, general perfomance and - in particular - all that on a
MacPlus.

Since I do not have regular access to the net, I would be thankful for
mail directly to me. If I achieve anything of public interest, I might
write some short digest and post it.

Please, don't leave me alone having to work with MS-DOS :-(

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Finder problem and LaserMax

I want to thank those people who responded to my finder problem.
The problem causing the message 'Could not allocate a working directory'
was caused by a corrupted B-tree index (whatever that is!). This was pointed
out to me by the technical folks at LaserMaster (LaserMax for us Mac folk)
in an attempt to get their printer working.

To correct this problem I had to back everything off the hard drive,
reformat it, and load everything back. It's interesting, but after putting
everything back on my disk utilization was only 55Meg as opposed to 85Meg.
It seems the B-tree index handles more than just where things are placed.

Also, in case anyone is interested. I'm in the process of testing a
LaserMax (supposedly 1000dpi) printer. The results at this time are
disappointing. The kerning of text seems to be off. Text appearing within
a drawn box remains within the box when printed on a IINT but can extend
beyond it when printed on the LaserMax. Justified text does not always
remain so, TIFF images (in pageMaker anyway) are truncated when placed
in the area from .25" to .5" from the page edge, and there are other problems.
I've been told that the new driver will correct these problems and I'm
supposed to receive it today or tomorrow. If anyone is interested I'll keep you
 informed.

   As Always,

There are some similar features in the Mac II family machines, though not
in all of them.
For the IIci and the IIfx,set the clock to the official announcement date
of the respective machine and reboot, holding down
cmd-opt-c-i, resp. cmd-opt-f-x
You'll get a nice picture of the people that worked on the machine (in color

Our school district is running MacJanet labs, and there are certain files
that should be locked permanently. Some brilliant kids, however, have
figured out the 'get info' boxes and unlocked these files.

Is there any way - with ResEdit perhaps - to diplay the 'get info' box
outside of the screen boundaries so that this could be accomplished?
It'll take them much longer to figure out a way around this fix.

By the way, we're running 512KE's, Plus's and Classics only.

Take a look at altWindef in the archive (does EXACTLY the same thing
you describe). You may also want to look at ZoomBar, WindowShade, and
WindowList. Zoombar, altWindef, and WindowShade all have similar
purposes, tend to be redundant and can confuse the heck out of one
another. WidowList turns window titles into pull down menus letting
you 'pop' whichever window you need to the front (helps you find what
you want within the clutter).

My own preference is ZoomBar and WindowList. I find WindowList especially
handy on the 9 inch (Mac SE/30, SE, etc.) screen.

As delivered, you have to launch Apple FileExchange (AFE) before you
can 'pop a MeSsy DOS disk into the Mac.' File Exchange will translate
ASCII files with little hassle, but it's annoyong how long it takes to
launch. Other file types (Lotus WRK, word processor, dBase, etc.) will
need some translating. Some applications (Word, Excel and to some extent
MacWrite II) can manage many of these without further ado (after
being "imported" by AFE's "default" <8-bit> translation). There are
a couple of (fairly expensive - on the order of $99 to $150) "translators"
for many other combinations.

If you want to read IBM disks directly from a Mac application, there are
a couple of cdev's for that purpose. I haven't experience with DOS Mount,
but I own PC Access and it's a wonder. With PC Access you can just
"take an IBM disk and pop it in the 'ol Mac." PC Access is available from
MacConnection for $82. I've had some instances of "peculiarities" while
writing TO MeSsy DOS disks from Mac Applications. Since I haven't noted
the same oddities with other applications, the problem may be with the way
the application writes (the app progrmmer never expected to write directly
to an MS-DOS disk). For example if I add linefeeds to a text file with
Vantage and save to a MeSsy DOS disk, the file gets corrupted (at the top?).
If I simply save the file to the Mac's hard disk and then drag it to the
MeSsy DOS disk (let Finder do the copy) the translation works fine. However,
it's not altogether evident that PC Access is blameless.

I also own the DataVis Translators. They work, sort of. Some things
get translated, some things not. For example, from MacWrite II to Word
Perfect - fonts, tabs, centering, underline, and bold face translate, but
page headers and footers don't. Peculiar things also may happen to
margins. If a Word Perfect file uses graphics, they ARE imported to
MacWrite II, but they won't transfer the other way. DataVis provides
literally hundreds of possible translations (most of which you'll never
use) but many of them are superficial (they ARE promising updates,
however).

One cute feature of translators and PC Access. If the Word Perfect files
on the MeSsy DOS disk are msdname.WP (your choice of what follows the '.'),
then I can click on the document and MacWrite II automagically launches and
translates WordPerfect to MacWrite II (slick :-).

>I seen advertisements for Laplink III and MacLink. It seems that both
>come with a cable and software. Are these better than the above

>would be greatly appreciated.

I have a colleague who's enamoured of cabling computers together, but
I don't allow MeSsy DOS machines across the threshold to my office :-)
In truth, I find it hard to believe that fooling with cables and special
applications tieing up two computers can be as convenient or as fast
as simply tossing a 3.5 inch disk in the Mac's drive.

One caveat (*REAL* IBM computers -- as distinct from the Mac and most
clones) will format 3.5 inch DD disks as 1.4 Mbytes (HD). The Mac won't
read a disk with a format inconsistent with the designation (neither will
Zeniths and most of the clones I've seen). That phenomenon has puzzled
the heck out of my colleagues who have IBM's in the office and clones at
home. I caught on right away and am used to it. Don't let your friends
razz you that "I thought you said your Mac would read MeSsy DOS disks!"
the answer is it will if they are formatted properly :-)

I am using SoftPC EGA/AT option. I can routinely get to our Novell
resources, but there is a catch. You must be running the MacVAP on
Novell. You then use the chooser to mount the DOS server as an AppleShare
server. You can then tell SoftPC to access that "drive" as a DOS drive.
All of the software then runs. I think the problem of direct access to
Novell (via ARCNet, for example) is that the IPX software from Novell
does not recognize the Appletalk port.

with printing PostScript files. The problems are due to our using
LaserWriter/LaserPrep 6.0.1 to better support our QMS ColorScript
100, while most people use LaserWriter/LaserPrep 5.2 on their
systems. Also some people include LaserPrep with their files and
others do not.

Since it is impossible to educate and update all of our potential
customers, I think the only solution is to be able to reinitialize
the printer with either version of LaserPrep. I can do this in
anawkward way by changing the LaserWriter/LaserPrep files on one Mac
and printing a blank document. However, this is inconvenient, too
complicated for our attendants (especially since the System Folder
is hidden), and wastes a page (expensive on a ColorScript printer).

What I need are two files that I can fire at a printer with SendPS -
one that reinitializes the printer with LaserPrep 5.2 and another
for LaserPrep 6.0.1. I can generate LaserPrep text files using the
Command-K trick, but these files do not reinitialize the printer. I
guess they can be edited to include code to clear the printer's
memory and then make themsleves resident, but I'd really like to
avoid wracking my brain trying to figure that out. Surely someone
already has the solution in hand. If you have a solution, myself
(and many others I'm sure) would greatly appreciate getting it.
Thanks.

To add to your list, I would stay away from Crickey Graph, and I recomend that
you consider Igor -- which is what I use.

Subject: SCSI Graph...

Does anyone on the net have any experience with the SCSI Graph box? This is a
physical interface for an Apple 13" RGB monitor that hangs off the SCSI bus
instead of the NuBus. It is useful for things like the Mac Portable or an
SE/30 that already has a card in the PDS. Any comments about the performance
of this box? How many bits of color does it support?

Subject: SIMM price dropping

Robert McMahon wrote in to ask about when prices on 4M SIMMs might be in the
$200 US range. Ask and ye shall receive. In the last couple of MacWeek mags
that I've received, several mail-order places have advertised 4M SIMMs in
the range of $200. 1M SIMMs are < $40. At prices like these, there's just
NO excuse not to grab some memory!

Subject: SyQuest report

 Erik,

I found your SyQuest drive summary (May 1990) very useful, and I am
now considering purchasing a syquest for home.

Could you send me (via e-mail to Internet or CompuServe) the responses
from your survey if you still have them?

I have set up a Wingz spreadsheet for tracking the prices, and the
average price of a syquest now appears to be about $535 including cartridge
 ($760 with 3 extra cartridges).

 Thanks in advance...

Subject: what do I do with a RasterOps 19" monitor?

I have a chance to pick up a RasterOps 19" color monitor cheap (C$2700)
but without a video card. From what I understand, my choices are
1) If it's a 60Hz monitor, I can use a RasterOps 108 or 108+ board.
2) If it's a 75Hz monitor, I need a RasterOps 708+ or 8L board.
The only currently manufactured board is the 8L, which lists for US$1995.
Questions:
1) Do I have the above facts straight?
2) Is this a good monitor? Is this a good deal on this monitor?
3) Where can I get any of the above boards CHEAP? Anybody know prices?

I think my email address is userxf7b@cc.sfu.ca -- but if anyone has one of
the above boards they'd like to sell me, please call (604) 421-2571.
Thanx in advance for your help, everybody . . . alex
