Subject: [*] Heaptool.1.2

This is a System Heap Management CDEV/INIT. It's shareware, and
I am *not* the author.

I mentioned it on comp.sys.mac... and received a flood of requests
for it. No problem, until the bounces outnumbered the successful
mailings.

The INIT is configured by the CDEV to set the minimum amount of
free System Heap at the conclusion of the INIT sequence of the
startup, i.e. just before Finder/MF starts.

Unlike Heapfixer, no changes are made to the boot blocks. Also
the amount of System Heap will dynamically change with the number
of INITs loaded and no manual tuning is required as you change your
INITs.

IBMKlone is a shareware postscript font designed to display the IBM
PC font on the Macintosh. The character encoding is the same as on
the IBM PC and so the Keys assigned to various characters may be
different than you normally use to access the characters in a
Macintosh font. To find a particular character, simply use your
KeyCaps da. If a file is imported from the IBM, the characters will
display correctly without modification.

A/UX 2.0 will not really run from CD-ROM. You could delete most of
the binaries and run them from CD-ROM, I suppose, but it would be
quite a chore figuring out which ones you need to boot far enough
to mount the CD-ROM. In general you're far better off buying a
cheap 80-150M hard drive for A/UX. CD-ROMs are very bad at seeking,
which is a common operation when running programs.

You could, I suspect, run X from CD-ROM, but again the performance
penalty is probably too high.

> So, I have two questions :

>1) how much of X Window is there with the standard A/Ux 2.0 distribution ?
> Is there a X Window server ?

With A/UX 2.0, no. There is no included X windows support. In A/UX
2.0.1 (first or second quarter 1991) MacX (the MacOS-style X window
server) will be included. The upgrade to 2.0.1 is supposed to be
nominal or free.

>2) what is the optional X Window for A/Ux ? Only libraries (which can be
> obtained from MIT), or the whol X Window with client/server, binaries...?

The whole X windows system (clients, server, libraries, includes, man
pages, etc) is available for A/UX from MIT. I have added significant
enhancements (shared library support) in a version I'm distributing
>From wuarchive.wustl.edu (where I maintain an ftp archive of all sort
of A/UX goodies, including Gnu tools and X). Binaries are available,
as well as (buggy) patches to X (buggy in that they're quite a hassle
to use; they're the same patches I used, but I've spent tons of time
pounding on the X code :-)).

Subject: Desparately Seeking Indonesian Water Temple Stack?

Greetings,

Some year(s) ago I attended a presentation (at a Macademia or EduCom) on a
project that began as an attempt to improve the distribution of water for rice
field irrigation and ended up discovering that the water priests did as good a
job as any engineer or scientist could. The people who did the study ended up
creating a hypercard stack (I think) that was a simulation of the situation.

If this rings any bells in your mind, I'd appreciate any leads. I'm trying to
find out more about this project and the people involved. This is for some work
I am doing in technology transfer.

Subject: DOS 4/Windows 3 to LaserWriter via LocalTalk

Greetings all,

I have a faculty member who has a 386 clone machine running DOS 4.0 and Windows
3.0. The rest of the department uses Macintoshes. He would like to be able to
print to the department LaserWriter from Windows via the LocalTalk network.

I have installed the LocalTalk PC card and software. The print test in LW.EXE
runs fine and we have sent PostScript documents from DOS via LW.EXE and they
have printed fine. We have NOT installed the AppleShare PC stuff and would
prefer not to. He has no desire or need to use the AppleShare servers.

The problem is that we cannot get printing from Windows to work at all. We've
tried everything logical and some illogical things (we've gone through every
port setting in the control panel for printing and none of them work). I don't
think we have a hardware conflict anywhere because the setup works from DOS, so
it must be a "Windows thing".

I received a couple of tips on AppleLink, but they were from folks using DOS
3.3, and they didn't seem to work. They were not very detailed, so maybe I just
bungled the implementation.

At any rate... HELP! I need to make this work. Thanks for any suggestions.
Either email or here is fine, I read through this forum at least twice a week.

Subject: How to interface a Sony color video projector with a Mac

Hello everyone,

I need to connect a Sony color video projector to a Mac for use in classes
and demonstrations. The projector works somewhat with the Mac with some
special cabling, etc., but the projected image always has several stray
horizontal lines in it. It seems that this is related to a difference in
scan rates between the two devices. I need a board or a "black box" that
would convert standard 8 bit color video from a Mac to a composite color
signal or NTSC color signal. The video projector is a Sony High Resolution
900 model VTH600Q.

I am interested in anyone's experience with this type of setup or an inter-
face that would do the conversion. I would also be interested in other ways
of projecting a good quality, true color image from the Mac. I am aware of
the color LCD panels for an overhead projector, but they are in the $5000
range, which is to pricey for us. I already have access to the Sony projector,
so I would like to use that if at all possible. Any other low cost (<$1500)
solutions?

Thanks for your help.

Subject: Macintosh SMTP servers

Greetings all,

Does anyone know of any SMTP servers that will run on Macs? I currently am
testing two freeware programs: MacPost, from Lund University in Sweden; and
MailStop from the University of Minnesota.

MacPost is quite nice, but has a couple of problems. It doesn't like to run on
a machine set up for AppleTalk Phase Two, it uses a proprietary method for
communications between the client and the host, local mail still has to go
through the "well connected SMTP server", and the interface is clunky in a
couple of places. It is, however, nice enough that I am currently using it for
my "real" network mail. It allows aliasing and forwarding, which makes it very
nice for handling local redistribution of Internet mailing lists. The client is
pretty bare bones, though, and doesn't allow a lot of the features that the POP
clients provide (groups, signature files, nicknames, real names attached to the
Internet ID, etc.). The best feature about MacPost is the support team at Lund
is really responsive to suggestions and questions.

MailStop seems to work well too, except for a couple of problems of its own. It
uses POP2, which is ok, but I'd really rather have a POP3 server in hopes of
using the EUDORA software from the University of Illinois as a client. It is
nice in that mail local to the Macintosh network does not have to go through the
"well connected SMTP server". The big problem with MailStop is that for some
reason that we have not been able to determine, it will not talk to the SMTP on
our IBM4381 machine. It will talk to our UNIX boxes, but will not accept a
connection from the CMS machine. The CMS machine and the UNIX boxes (and
everywhere else for that matter) talk to one another. It also does not seem to
provide any means of aliasing or forwarding

So, any ideas on either of the above? Is anyone using either of these systems
for SMTP mail distribution on a Macintosh network? Thanks for any information
and suggestions.

Greetings all,

I have just received what looks to be a neat new shareware product for the
Macintosh called "The News". This is a Mac front-end to the UNIX UseNet NetNews
system. I have it partially working to our local NNTP server, but the posting
part does not seem to work. I need to find out if this is a problem with the
local UNIX machine (which is a hackinsteinian nightmare) or the NetNews client
program. This is a slick looking product, and I may be trying to arrange a site
license with the author if I can verify that it all works correctly.

So, what I need is some sort of "public" NNTP host, or at least one that can be
set to allow me to access it briefly, that will allow both reading and posting
of messages from the client. If it still breaks, then I know something is wrong
with the way I've set up the client. If it works, then it's our UNIX box that
has the problem.

Does anyone know of a site that is set up this way, or are there any of you out
there administering a machine running NNTP to which I could connect briefly to
check this out. The IP address for my Macintosh (from which I'll be testing
this) is 132.178.6.4 and the nameserver recognizes it as "brucespc.idbsu.edu".

Thanks for any help.

Greg Wimpey flames (properly so, in my opinion) about the demo of the Diamond
compression utility that stopped working after some period of time but never
warned us that it would. Greg, there is a simple fix. Set your clock back to
the days when you did the compression (check the dates on the compressed file)
and Diamond will run again. Its date check seems to be pretty simplistic.
Whatever happened to Diamond anyway? As I recall, it did a pretty decent job of

Subject: Upgrading Laserwriter IINTx

Hi,

I have a user that has a Laserwriter IINTx. The printer has 2 mb and
they purchased a 4 mb upgrade kit from Apple. After installing the
additional memory, it shows that the printer has 3 mb. Can anyone
help us out by explaining how memory upgrades on the Laserwriter II's
work?

Thanks,
Kathy DuBose

I can personally vouch for the fact that the INIT which Disinfectant
installs works. A colleague used his son's SE over the weekend. When
he came to the office and put his disks in his new SE/30, Disinfectant
"automagically" detected both WDEF and nVIR (I think it said nVIR b?) -
not both on the same disk, but he had both.

Disinfectant removed both (had to run the application to get rid of
nVir; you also can get rid of WDEF by holding down command-option when you
insert the disk and answering Yes to the "Do you want to rebuild the
desktop" question).

The latest version (2.4 dated 12/3/90) was posted to the info-mac archive
on 12/4. I got my copy from LISTERV@RICE yesterday.

Subject: Voice-mail for Mac?

Greetings all,

Is there a voice-mail system for the Macintosh that will run in the background
under MultiFinder. It would probably be cheaper to just buy a PC clone and use
one of the existing PC based systems, but I am biased... *heh*.

Subject: WHODUNNIT: The Solution

Several days ago I posted a problem with a computer refusing to recognize
any floppy that was inserted into the drive.

Thanks to all who sent me help; I had people suggest that:

I was using a 1.44 meg HD disk...
I should have the floppies realigned...
I should repair the disk with Disk First Aid...
I should repair the disk with a commercial program (SUMII)...
I should clean the disk drives...
I should rebuild the desktop...

Unfortunately, none of these suggestions helped, except for rebuilding the
desktop. While it wouldn't help the floppy disk (for long), had I thought
of rebuilding the *hard disk*, my problems might have been solved.

Why? Well, an old version of Disinfectant was used to check for viruses.

This particular version missed the WDEF (or was it MDEF) virus that was
residing in the finder of the hard drive.

Therefore, whenever I would insert an unlocked floppy, it would insist that
I reinitialize the disk or have it repaired. Yet when the floppy was
locked, the computer read the disk with no problem.

So there is a happy ending to this story; all our data was still intact.
Unfortunately, the company whose computers we were using to do layout were
on a TOPS network, and the WDEF virus had apparently spread to every
workstation in the building.

Once again, thanks to all who sent me assistance.
