PC-KIMMO:a two-level processor for morphological analysis

PC-KIMMO is a new implementation for microcomputers of a program
designed to generate (produce) and recognize (parse) words. It is based
on Kimmo Koskenniemi's two-level model of word structure in which a word
is represented as a correspondence between its lexical (underlying) form
and its surface form. PC-KIMMO is language-independant. For each
language description the user prepares two input files: (1) a set of
rules that govern phonological/orthographic alternations and (2) a
lexicon that lists all words (and/or morphemes) in their lexical form
and specifies constraints on their order. The rules and lexicon are
implemented computationally using finite state machines.

TeachTextMaker version 1.1

Creating TeachText readme files containing Pictures in the past was something
most people didn't like to do. Moreover many people didn't even know how to do
it. It was a complex task, juggling resources, using ResEdit. So there weren't
too many TeachText files with Pictures about. And yet, TeachText is an ideal
instrument for readme documents and online-manuals of all kinds: it launches
quickly, uses little memory and above all: everybody's got it.

So I decided to write an application to create TeachText files as easily as it
is to create a MacWrite document, using cut&paste-like commands. The result was:
TeachText Maker (TTM).

This is version 1.1:

* printing is now included.
* you can now directly import pictures from
draw/paint programs, the complex picture pre-processing is now done by TTM.
* delete pict: the carriage returns after the insertion point will be deleted.
*'fast typing' option is now included.
* basic search/replace facilities are provided.
* suggested memory size (multifinder) is filled out.
* several bugs were fixed.

Maze is an entertaining screensaver for use with Berkeley System's After Dark
software. After blanking the screen, it constructs mazes, "growing" them in
random directions. It solves each maze by exhaustively searching possible
paths. Every maze is different, and each maze is drawn at a different
resolution so that different pixels get used.

If you have any comments or suggestions, or if you have anything special
you would like a screensaver to do, please let me know! Hope you like it.

This is version 1.1c. This file should replace after-dark-roaming-lines.hqx

Here's the COLOR update for a screensaver I posted a couple weeks ago. You have
to be running in 4-bit or higher to see the color. In addition I've added a
few more checkboxes in the control panel, maybe useful, maybe not.

Roaming Lines is the speediest screen saver I've seen - it's fast enough so it
looks smooth on an SE. Up to five independent lines bounce around the screen
followed by moire shadows of adjustable size. The lines can be made long or
short, and can bounce a lot or a little. Also, you can have the screen
saver start by quickly dissolving the screen it in blocks.

Please send ideas for improvements and your ideas for better screen savers, and
I'll try my best to implement them. Until then, enjoy!

Subject: [*] Wingz MountTools

MountTools is a "tool" for Informix Wingz. A Wingz tool is a file which
contains external commands for the Wingz spreadsheet. MountTools contains
three external commands:

o Mount - mounts an AppleShare server disk, bypassing the Chooser
o Unmount - unmounts a disk, similar to dragging the disk to the trash
o Shutdown - shuts down and turns off your Macintosh

These Wingz external commands are in fact quite unusual. You see, MountTools
contains "inside itself" (in its resource fork) two Hypercard external
commands (XCMDs), "Mount" and "Unmount", and an FKEY (function key) called
"Shutdown". The external commands for Wingz don't really do anything, but
call their HyperCard and FKEY counterparts to do the real work.

[ These HyperCard external commands were mailed to me by a kind person on the
network. The orginal author of these commands is Peter Desnoyers. ]

I used the HyperCard command "Mount", because I found out that mounting an
AppleShare server disk is not a trivial thing to do, and the HyperCard command
already worked. Once I had written a shell to call XCMDs, I decided to use
the other HyperCard command, "Unmount", as well. The "Shutdown" FKEY is there
for more technical reasons (Wingz will crash if you try to shut down the
Macintosh directly from a tool).

Besides MountTools, I am also posting the MountTools source code (written in
MPW C v3.1), which demonstrates how to call HyperCard external commands
yourself. This is useful for writers of external commands for programs such
as Wingz, 4th Dimension, and others, since there are so many HyperCard XCMDs
out there to make use of! It may also help programmers who wish to call
XCMDs from their own standalone applications.

Subject: Appletalk Printing from Windows 3.0

With a pc appletalk card, the software configures itself as lptx where
x can be 1,2, or 3. Typically lpt1 is used as the port for automatic
ascii-->postscript translation so things like printscreen and dumb non-
postscript supporting software can print, and lpt2 or 3 used for sending
postscript.
 1. many windows postscript drivers include control-Ds in their job stream.
In some cases you can configure the appletalk driver to strip these (the
Daystar software for their appletalk card can do this). Another way to avoid
it is to pick your softwares' option of print-to-file but use a filename
that is the same as the driver (lpt3 or lpt3.prn). Worst case, print to file
and then use an editor to get rid of the control-D (which looks like a diamond
on the pc screen).
 2. on a 386 machine, you can use the lpt1.os2 to make sure it uses a device
driver instead of printing to the memory address where the printer port
"nominally" lives.
 3. another failure source can be the postscript printer you are using.
If it has limited memory (like original laserwriters) and you are also
doing things like downloading fonts from the Macs, you may end up with
insufficient memory to handle the PC's downloaded prologue. When laserwriters
run out of memory the failures can be obscure (like it just blinking
until the job times out). There are postscript code fragments that can
make the laserwriter printout its status (postscript version, total memory
and available memory) to help diagnose this problem. On the dos side is
a program called errorhdl.ps which tells the laserwriter's postscript inter-
preter: "hey, when you get an error print out the error status."

Greetings,

I have recently added color to an object-oriented graphics application
for garden design ("Mum's the Word"). I am trying to find information
on half-tone printing on laser writers and saw your correspondence on
the network. The above sounds like the laser writer will do it for
you. Is this true? What do you do with earlier laser writer software?

I'd appreciate any help you could give me: references, suggestions, code,

The SAM INIT, as marketed, does not yet have the BUILT-IN capability of
detecting the ZUC 2 virus strain. But the nice thing about SAM INIT is the
ability to add search strings. A quick phone call to the Symantic Virus Update
service will fill you in as to how to add a string definition into SAM so that
it will detect and erradicate the ZUC 2 virus... and any other future virus
that comes along (Symantec also sends postcards with said information... of
course, they arrive some weeks after the first reported infection of the virus
in question... so the phone # comes in handy for instant updates).

And no... I'm not affiliated or associated with Symantec in any way... in fact,
I have many flames about the company... but this is one product that they did
right.

Subject: Virus detection.

I received an enormous response to my recent request for assistance on
virus detection. There is no way I could individually thank all those who
helped, but thanks to all.

I had tried Disenfectant before posting the request. However, I did not find
the hidden key to creating the INIT. Someone pointed out the menu item
and it was in business. Later I found the help screens which probably
would have led me there.

Another question:

We have been using SafeEject on 6.0.3 to avoid disk problems for some time.
I would like to upgrade to 6.0.7 and seem to remember that Apple included
the same functionality in the newer version. There is no easy way to
search the archives (where I think this was discussed) without downloading
a whole lot of them. Does anyone remember if this INIT is still needed?

And an observation:

On 6.0.3, a SfGetFile with numTypes set to 0 will display all the files.
On 6.0.7, it only displays folders. There are no files to choose from.
You really have to follow the Inside-Mac instructions and set it to -1.
Sometimes it pays to read a little more carefully...
