I have both Ehman and Mass Micro SyQuest drives. I'm not real fond of either's formatting software. Has anyone got anything good or bad to say about SilverLining on either of these SyQuest drives? I am also getting a 600 MB (yes, I know I'm a pig) drive and was thinking about using SilverLining to partition it. Any comments on their partitioning software? I'm not keen on partitioning. I prefer one big volume. The only reasons I see for partitioning are: 1) Keeping smaller desktop files. I am using the Desktop Manager, so this may be less of a concern. Anyone know of a limit for the DM? 2) Larger block allocation sizes. Larger volumes waste space by allocating bigger minimum file sizes. A floppy uses .5K, an 80MB uses 1K, a 150MB uses 1.5K, a 600MB probably uses 3K (my VAX does). Does Silverlining's partitioning change this? I tried the SUM partition INIT and it didn't affect this, which wasn't surprising. It would need to reformat the drive to affect this. SilverLining might be able to. Does it? 3) Software crash protection. Since a hardware crash will kill the entire drive, and Norton or SUM can recover from software, I don't really see this as a good reason. Thanks for any comments you wish to make. The reason I switched is that I use a color monitor and programs that can utilize specified fill patterns as well as color. When printed on an HP PaintJet everything looks fine. Printed on the LaserWriter with the color/grayscale set, all the colored objects are different shades of gray. This means that specific patterns set within the program are not recognizable in the LW printout and the solid borders around filled objects appear gray instead of solid black. In addition, text in colors on the screen look terrible when printed in gray. Since most users do not have true color or grayscale output capabilities, the default should be B&W, not color/grayscale. Perhaps the value set by the user should remain until it is reset?! Then, if I set it to B&W, it will remain B&W until I change it. Incidently, the "skanky app" I am running was just developed using MPW object Pascal and MacAPP. - Bob Gross bob.gross@dartmouth.edu ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Dec 90 19:20:31 EST From: jeffrey templon <templon@copper.ucs.indiana.edu> Subject: Disk Error with Stuffit 1.6 Installer? Watts -- Rochester" <WATTS@urpas> Subject: HyperCard 2.0 and System 7.0... Hi y'all, Oh. I'm sorry if this has already been discussed here... but... I got a philosophy question here (thought it up in the trudging through the snow this afternoon). IAC (inter-application communication) is comming with System 7.0. Thus one app can send commands, requests, etc. to another. This, among other things, makes a command language (or scripting language) possible. I have heard that some future release of HyperCard is going to take care of this. This, I think, is a very good idea. I think that HyperCard is a great plattform for scripting. For one thing, it means we don't have to learn a new language (just use HyperTalk) -- or at least those of us who know it. Besides, HyperTalk was aimed at non-programmers. What does this mean for HyperCard? Well, it seems to me that this ties HyperCard to the Mac system more closely than ever; it will become an essential piece of software for the very existance of our Macs. "Fine!", "Great", you say. What about this upgrade policy? 50 bucks for 2.0? Will it cost me more when I want to get the HyperCard that can do scripting? What about developers who write scripts? They can't be sure that their software will be running on a Mac with HyperCard 2.0 -- because the person (or company) didn't feel like upgrading at 50 bucks a pop. One of the great things about the mac is its stability accross hardware plattforms. I think it will be a pitty to lose this accross software bounds. On the other hand, I could be completely missunderstanding this upgrade policy! Gordon. Lyons) Subject: Misc Questions: SIMMs, H.C., Upgrading, Accessories and more Hello, I have a number of questions, which I have broken down into categories. If you can help me with answer any of them, please do. I would much appreciate it. My configuration is the following: Mac SE 2Meg Ram/40HD, ext keyboard, standard mouse, EMac MD2400 modem, HP DeskWriter. Software applictions include Microsoft Word 4.0B, Microsoft Excel 2.2a, SuperPaint 2.0a, and DeltaGraph 1.5. I am currently running under System 6.05, using Multifinder 1.2.5. Also, my Hypercard version is 1.2.5. Hardware: --------- I am currently considering upgrading from 2 to 4 meg Ram. The primary purpose is to increase Multifinder's capability. I believe it to also increase speed in general, including printing time (according to HP). Mac Connection is selling 80ns SIMMs 2 Meg for $99. 1. Is my assumption correct about multifinder and speed? 2. Are these SIMMs a good deal? 3. Is 80ns a good SIMM? My campus store sells SIMMs at twice the price but didn't know off-hand what the ns was on them. I think I will have my campus store install them for the whopping price of $40. High, but I want my warrantees in tact and that is what thye charge to open up the machine. Software: --------- Product upgrades. 1. How does anyone keep up with upgrades? I don't have a magazine or other subscription - do I need one to keep up to date? Which ones? 2. Is system 6.07 worth the the trouble to get? 3. How do I get 6.07? 4. I have heard about hypercard's upgrade. Could someone please give me information on how to get the upgrade? Perhaps the co. telephone #. 5. Have there been any upgrades in Multifinder beyond the one I have? If so, what are the changes and how do I get it? Accessories: (Mac Mobility) ------------ I make a about a 6 or 8 long road trips per year - each in excess of 300 miles. Bringing my Mac with me would be very useful. 1. How transportable is this machine? 2. What risks of damage do I run, especially to internal mechanisms? I have looked in a couple places for carrying cases and found three different makers, all within $10. Mac Connection's catalog lists Targus and I/O Design. Their sales help was suprising not very helpful in deciding between them. Features were sited, but the features were not the same (ie...this one is double stitched and the other ?) I looked at the one by Linebacker in my campus computer store. Didn't seem all that protective and perhaps they will all appear that way. The only advantage I can see is that Targus has a seperate Keyboard carry case for added protection. 3. Ok, so how do I decide? Is there a "best" cushion material to be looking for? 4. Recommendations anyone? Does anyone have one and want to let me in on how they feel about it? As I mentioned above, I have an HP Deskwriter. I would like to order additional fonts and also a dust cover. 5. Where can I get hold of an HP Sales rep? Telephone # anyone? Well, that's it for now. I would sincerely appreciate any help you can give me in gaining information about any of the above questions. I'm trying to get just such a configuration up and running on DEC LanWORKS (oh, okay -- PATHWORKS!) and have had no luck thus far. When I click on AppleShare in the Chooser, I see no services or volumes available, yet the processes are running on the VAX. Unfortunately, I have no other Macs on which to test any of the questionable components, so the problem could well be the EtherTalk card, the NuBus adapter, the IIsi PDS slot, or the configuration of LanWORKS on the VAX. Most of what I print is text or text with straight black line "clip art." I use a LaserWriter because it's quiet, fast, prints nice sharp multiple fonts and generally makes the output from HP printers connected to MeSsy DOS boxes look (comparatively) like it was pounded out on Andy Rooney's beloved Underwood. On those occasions when I DO need to put out a grayscaled graphic (mostly statistical charts and figures) I do (manually) select the 'color' option. The printer manual's solution is to recommend using the older LaserWriter driver (Apple's System disk offers the B/W LaserWriter driver and has the grey/color version hidden in the "color folder" -- if I haven't got that exactly correct it's because I'm at home and haven't the disk handy to peek into to verify).
