Source code for this program was uploaded to Compuserve in September with very little fanfare, and I downloaded it and compiled it "as is". It worked! Seagate harddisk 1 external diskdrive The problem: when I want to copy a file from my hard-disk the Mac crashes less than gracious ly with an ID=03 or an ID=02. This behaviour happens mostly with big files but sometimes also with small files. The Mac was checked today with the Apple test program, everything is OK accordi ng to the program. The hard-disk is OK according to me, I've tested it on more than one other Mac. The only thing the technician didn't test was the scsi port. HELP! Background: We are running Appleshare and we have two folders one which is available to the public and one which is only available to staff. We have ReadySetGo 4.0 and related files in a folder, which is in an Applications folder which is read-only by the staff and not available to any one else. Thus no one but staff can access RSG 4.0. Situation: Yesterday while I (staff) was browsing through my files I noticed that all of my RSG 4.0 documents (icons) where appearing as what I think was an Arabic font. I then noticed that ALL RSG 4.0 documents had the same Arablic Icon. (I have superuser authority to look at everyone documents I then checked the application folder and sure enough the RSG 4.0 application icon was Arabic. Note: The dictionary files for RSG was normal and all other application icons were also normal. Action: Because I was totally baffled, I proceeding to erased RSG 4.0 from the the application folder and recopy it from a back-up. But when I copied back into the RSG folder it appeared as Arabic. I then checked my documents and they were back to normal although the application still looked arabic. Finally I trashed the RSG folder (and contents) and recopied them from the backup and all looks well. Could someone please enlighten me as to what may be happening here?! I guess there is a Seagate ST277N inside the CE box. When these mechanisms spin down, they make the noise you describe. Mine makes the noise when spinning down since I bought it (sometime in 1987 if memory serves me correctly). The drive performs flawlessly, the only problem is that the gigantic disk space it had when I bought it is now almost completely filled. 63 Megs are not that large anymore... So, I don't think there is anything to worry about. --maarten -- In real life: Maarten Carels Computer Science Department University of Amsterdam email: maarten@fwi.uva.nl ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Dec 90 09:08:05 PST From: HWE%ORFE.ESNET@esnmrg.nersc.gov Subject: extractor The first of what will probably be many Compactor files has appeared on the SUMEX archive (/da/binhqx-102.hqx). Susan Jones) Subject: Info-Mac Digest V8 #213 Chuck Weinstock asked about Label Making Programs for the Mac. (See annotated below)... I'm interested in finding a good label making program for the Macintosh. The ideal program would let me create custom graphics and serialized labels for any of a very wide variety of laserprinter forms. In particular, I want to be able to make diskette labels as well as shipping labels, return address labels, etc. Printing envelopes would be nice, but is not a real requirement... Well - my suggestions are for Fast Label - I have an old version which can be klugey, but I hear that 2.0 is much better. I especially like the feature where you pop in disks and it atomatically creates a label entry with that disk name, then ejects the disk for you. (It's great for creating instant labels!) I also have heard rave reviews about a product named "Sticky Business" although I've never used it myself. --------------------------------------------------------------------- M. I have had 2 macs on carts with a datashows for about 2 years. They have had hard drives for only about 6 months. They function perfectly well. Another department on our campus has had a hard drive on their cart for over 2 years. My biggest concern is that the mac will fall off of the cart when it encounters a large bump. Many macintosh hard drives will park their heads when they are powered down. I just remind my users that they need to pull shutdown before turning the mac off. -- William C. It seems to me that this feature is quite important for anyone hoping to use a Mac for IBM mainframe work; how can we convince users to give up their dumb terminals and DOS machines if we can't offer at least equivalent functionality? Peter's workaround will be very helpful as an interim solution, but I'd like to change his mind about the number of users who need or want support for multiple 3270 sessions. Am I out of step, or is this a feature that others would also find useful or important? If you'd like to send me a short note expressing your opinion on this issue I'll summarize the responses to Peter. Thanks, Don <spgdrp@uccvma.ucop.edu>. ------------------------Peter's original message---------------------------- As you are aware, tn3270 does not support multiple sessions. However, you can have multiple tn3270 sessions simultaneously by running more than one copy of tn3270 under MultiFinder. To do this, you must be using MacTCP with the MacTCP version of tn3270, and you must have separate copies of tn3270 on your disk, with different names. Provided you have sufficient disk space and RAM, this method works quite well. I do consider it a long-term goal to add multiple sessions to tn3270. However, I feel that a relatively small number of users need this feature, and that there are other features of more general value that I should work on first, especially since the solution I described above is available. By the way, from your mail address, it appears you are using a VM system. For VM, there is an excellent program called SESSION which allows you to log on and switch between multiple accounts from one terminal session. SESSION is available on the VM Workshop tapes, and from the author, Arty Ecock, eckcu@cunyvm.cuny.edu. Peter ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Dec 90 12:13:17 SST From: "S.
