Subject: [*] Knight 0.7

Knight is a solitaire board game. The object is to move your Knight (as
in Chess) around a chessboard, trying to land on _every_ square exactly once.
Instructions are included in the program. There _is_ a solution!!
This is the third pre-release of Knight. Knight 1.0 will include many new
features, such as a configurable board, a two-player game, and color. One of
these days I'll get around to finishing it, but until then.... This release
is in response to those who requested an animated solution to the puzzle.
Please note that this is only one possible solution; there may be others.
(For those of you who already have Knight 0.6, you may want to take a look at
this version; it has a few new features besides the animated solution.)
Knight is FREE, but I ask that you send a picture postcard of your town to
me or drop me some email so I can see how far Knight has spread. (Please!)

Subject: Card for Sun 3 monitor as display to the Mac

Hi,
I will be having some Sun 3 monitors sitting around my office soon.
This is due to an upgrade of the current Sun 3 to Sparc.

I am thinking of using them for my Mac IIs as 19 in monitors. I
tested them with a RasterOps card. I do get stable display but because the
card does not have the correct resolution option (ie. 1152 by 900 for the
sun 3 monitor), I could not get a visible display.

Is there such a card out there that allows this resolution? I
read the January issue of MacWorld but the cards featured do not seem
to have this configuration.

        Thanks for any info.

Subject: Digest Volume Numbers

In Vol 9 (nee 91) Issues 1, 2 & 3 the question of why Volume 9 when the
Mac has only been around since 1984 arose.

- The original Info-Mac was not a moderated digest, but a mailer which
retransmitted all the messages to the list of addressees. In this format,
Info-Mac started sometime in the spring of 1984.

- The Premere issue of a moderated digest in the present form was
dated Feb 14 85 and was Vol 2 No 1, although not so marked. I do not
know for sure how many issues there were; but not many.

- Volume 3 No 1 - May 27 85. Again, I am not certain how many issues
there were. I might speculate that the volume number was changed on
the anniversary of the very first issue.

- Volume 4 No 1 - Nov 17 85, to No 131 - Oct 15 86.

- Volume 5 No 1 - Oct 26 86, to No 146 - Dec 20 87.

- Volume 6 No 1 - Jan 17 88, to No 123 - Dec 30 88.

- Volume 7 No 1 - Jan 2 89, to No 230 - Dec 30 89.

- Volume 8 No 1 - Jan 2 90, to No 219 - Dec 30 90.

It is very interesting to see how the topics have changed, and how many
have continued, over the six year period. As a long time reader, I would
like to express my special thanks to all of the moderators who have
contributed their time and effort to bring this service to the community
of Mac users.

I have been using Alsoft's Disk Express II since it was released, and
I am quite pleased with its performance. It is a big improvement over
the original version, which was an application. Version 2 is an
INIT/cdev. It will automatically defragment your hard disk in the
background after a period of inactivity on the mac (i.e. it kicks in
like a screen blanker would). It maintains a log of file activity
and puts frequently accessed files on those parts of the disk
 accessed fastest.

The program seems to be well-behaved and stable. I am always leery of
programs that start moving files around on my disk on their own, but
I have had no problems with DE. It is also fairly reasonably priced.

Disk Express II (v. 2.04) from ALSoft has been a solid and reliable
disk optimizer for me. It's an INIT/CDEV combination that runs
automatically in the background, keeping your hard disks from becoming
fragmented. It can be turned on and off, you can examine the
condition of each HD, and various options can be selected, all from
the Control Panel. I run it on both an SE/30 and a Mac II, each with
three HD's of different brands attached, plus a reasonable collection
of other INITs, and have had no troubles that can be attributed to
Disk Express.

I haven't deliberately tried to run this program through any
wringers, but so far as I can see it's solid and useful

Subject: File transfer question . . .

Hi,
I'm trying to transfer a collection of files from a VAX to my Mac. Can
someone tell me how this can be done in a sort of 'batch' mode. I have
two terminal emulators which allow a file-by-file transfer, but there
are several hundred files and it would be nice if I could just tell the
VAX something like:
	program_prompt > SEND *.ADA
and the two programs would co-ordinate the naming, opening, closing, etc of
each file automatically. One emulator (Kermit, I believe) will send all the
files from the VAX, but concatenates them all into a single file on the Mac.
This is acceptable as a last resort, but not desireable.

I know I'll need both ends of the program (one for the VAX and one for
the Mac). Thanks for your help.

The company is Nine to Five Software. The so-called "nominal fee" is $60,
which is 100% of the street price of the original package. The list price of
the package has risen 50%, to $149. Since I depend on the original Reports
for a number of my Hypercard databases, I gritted my teeth and ordered the
upgrade.

It is actually quite nifty. It's seems like it is faster and it offers a
bunch of new features. There is no longer a "Report Card". You now install a
pop-up button in your stack which will give you access to any reports you've
layed out. You can print to the screen without going to the Chooser to select
a Previewer. I believe you can print to a file, and can export your data
formatted as you desire; I've not tried this.

Something I think is especially neat is the ability to create "views" of your
Hypercard stack. You can select a subset of fields on a background, give the
program selection criteria to determine which cards to view, and it will go
and generate a spreadsheet-like view of those fields of those cards. You can
edit the cells, and the data changes in the cards. You can tell it to go to a
particular card that you've located in this view.

If I were at home, I'd have more info. Sorry. Nine to Five has an 800
number; call (800) directory assistance...

Subject: hypercard problems

Here's the scenario:

The user puts Disk 1 and Disk 2 into the disk drives, and turns the machine on.
I have Hypercard, System, printer files, and my own home stack on Disk 1.
I have renamed Hypercard to "Finder" so that users will not have to deal with
the finder, but rather Hypercard will launch upon startup. This also makes the
machine shut down once Hypercard has been quit, which is desirable. The home
stack simply says:

        on openstack
go to stack "Disk 2:Lesson 1"
        end openstack

This does not work. The home stack opens, and then I get a open dialog box
asking "Where is `Disk 2:Lesson 1' ?". At first the open dialog box shows the
contents of Disk 1, and then it quickly changes to the contents of Disk 2.
Apparently, the machine executes all the commands in the home stack before it
acknowledges the existence of Disk 2. I've tried creating another stack (which
is called by home, and in turn calls Lesson 1), and I've tried placing the home
stack on Disk 2, all to no avail.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: IBM & SEGA

It seems that IBM is not only interested in the PC market, it is also making
inroads into video games. IBM has make a strategic alliance with SEGA
to make AT-compatible pcs dedicated for video games based on the
Sega's Mega Drive system. Sega will also make a CD Rom drive for it
as well.

This speaks much for IBM, but very little for Apple. While Apple
is unsure of its market, IBM makes sures that every thing with a
chip in it is PC-based. Why can't Apple do the same thing and promote
games development. NOT for the sake of games, but to create a pool
of Casual Programmers.

By my definition, a Casual Programmer would be one who programs for
the fun of it out of his own time. Most students anywhere knows
Turbo Pascal or Turbo C for the PC environment, but how many
buy Think C (or God forbid, MPW) just to program for fun???!!!

What are your opinions on what you think Apple should do?

Greetings,

I will PAY (but I'm not saying how much [little]) for information that leads to
the successful use of system 6.0.5 or later on my Macintosh. I have an old Mac
512 that has been upgraded with Plus ROMs and 800K drive. It also sports a
Human Touch memory upgrade/accelerator. Total RAM is 2MB. No SCSI port.

When I try to boot with system 6.0.x it hangs after the welcome to Macintosh
screen. If I add Macsbug, and press the interrupt switch after waiting anywhere
>From 30 seconds to 5 minutes Macsbug comes up, but it does not respond to the
keyboard. (It will run the macros "Firsttime" or "Everytime" if they are
installed in Macbug's resource fork.)

I have heard that other Human Touch users CAN run 6.0, so I got to thinking
that perhaps the problem is with the jumpers on the board. You see, I bought
the board from the guy who developed its ROM code, and he may have had it
configured in some kind of supervisor mode or whatever.

At any rate, any tips, suggestions, condolences, etc. would be greatly
appreciated.

I don't think you're going to find a "read-only" PageMaker, but the

Subject: SuperCard External Commands ... HELP!

Along with the SuperCard 1.5 upgrade, of course, came the project (tucked in
the "Bonus Projects" folder) called "Xtend". It's one of those extras that you
just don't pay that much attention to at first... but, after a few months of
ignoring it completely, you come to realize how valuable it is. Xtend contains
some rather important external command resources that can be installed into
your own project. Unfortunately, at least two of these resources do not
function properly... and I need help to correct the situation.

The two commands (XFCDs) are:
1) "listFolders (<volume name>)" which, after specifying a volume pathname,
lists all folders contained on the volume within that pathname (and each folder
is listed with it's complete pathname... this is important) ...

and...

2) "listFiles (<volume name>)" which, it follows, does the same thing for
FILES within the given pathname.

the problem is, no matter which pathname you specify, these two commands only
list the files and folders on the volume with the operating system.

I've called Silicon Beach... they told me, basically (brief flame on) they are
aware of the problem, but they "have no plans to update those commands". In
other words... yeah... it don't work... so what... what do you expect? It was
FREE anyway (ok... flame off).

My problem is that I do NEED these XFCDs. If anyone knows of any other external
commands that perform the same functions... or if anyone has taken the time to
correct the bug in the SuperCard XFCDs... could you PLEASE let me know. I would
be forever in your debt.

I would like to challenge your assertion that the Macintosh may not survive.

Would you please first define the word "survive" and then relate it to
the context of your argument. Coming from a strong DOS background, I
still fail to see the merit of your pontifications.

Subject: WRITENOW

I have a user of WRITENOW ver 2.0 with a problem word processing file.
There was a system crash using the file, and subsequent attempts to
access it results in the following error message :
"The document or dictionary is in use by someone else. Only locked files
may be used simultaneouly".
Locking the file is no more successful, results in "Unexpected error -39
occurred while reading or writing the disk".

Does anyone have any bright ideas on how to rescue the document?
Thanks in advance

Greetings,

A problem that has surfaced here very recently by two different users
has got use sort of stumped. The operating systems involved are 6.0.5
and (I think 6.0.3) and have been reported like this:

Using an SE/30 (amount of memory doesn't appear to be a factor) the
system performance slowly deteriorates. The machine begins running at
normal speeds, but after about a half an hour of use using various
applications (including MS-WORD, WINGZ, Delta Graph, MacWrite II) the
machine slowly grinds to a halt. Other symptoms: Icons take a long
time to explode, the computer stops to perform some sub-task (like a
spell check) and never returns, you can acutally see the menu items
blink three times on the pull down menu (like in the old days of Mac
systems). No special INITs have been involved except Pyro and SAM.
Could the SAM intercept be causing problems? Is it a memory management
problem? Do our Macs hate us?
