This is good for you, since I spent my afternoon writing Buttoneer. Buttoneer is a CDEF resource that will allow programmers to implement buttons and other simple controls that look like anything you can imagine. Generally, you can define PICT resources to replace check boxes, radio controls, buttons and other controls. The demo program includes the CDEF resource itself and shows a couple of simple examples of how it might be used. Source code for the demo is included, and this is useful in itself. A lot of tricks for manipulating dialogs can be gleaned from this code. It is also slightly amusing and even non-programmers might be entertained for 30 seconds or more by the example "check box". Buttoneer is copyright by Christopher Eliot, but it can be used without charge for any purpose, including commercial uses. All I ask is that your program or documentation gives me credit if you include Buttoneer. See the distribution note in the ReadMe document. Reply to condof@clargrad.bitnet or condof@clargrad.claremont.edu or fredc@pro-humanist.cts.com, and I will summarize for the net. On a totally different topic, earlier I posted about a problem compacting stacks with resource forks, under Hypercard 2.0. Subsequently, I found out that this was caused by an interaction between Hypercard 2.0 and Virtual 2.0, which is published by Connectix. Both the 68020/68851 and the 68030 versions of Virtual cause this problem, which happens when a page fault occurs while Hypercard is replicating the resource fork. I have reported the bug and provided data samples to Connectix's technical support staff, but have not heard back from them as yet. The problem does NOT occur with the virtual memory in System 7.0b1. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Feb 91 15:50 MET From: "A.L. I've been researching this, and, having come from the world of UNIX and VAXEN, I must admit that I'm a little shocked on how hard (and expensive) it is to connect _any_ kind of PC up to Big Blue hardware. As far as I can see, my choices come down to a product called IDEAComm Mac (from IDEAssociates), and TwinAxcess (from KMW Systems). Also, as far as I can see we're gonna have to pay about a thousand bucks for the boards and emulation software. Sheesh. Emulation for IBMs own Personal [sic] System II only costs about $300. This makes it hard to justify buying Macs, since terminal emulation is important here. So, anybody who has to live with Twinax, drop me a line. It has the standard 2MD and came with the 40 meg HD. Our problem comes when we connect our old SuperMac 30 meg DataFrame hard drive. Everything seems find for a while then we get a system alert telling us "address error" or "coprocessor not installed" after which we have to reset the machine. This only happens in the finder and only after we've clicked on a window. We've launched applications and successfully retrieved files from the DataFrame so this seems to be finder specific. We've cleaned the system (6.0.7) right off and reinstalled to no avail and we've also checked for viruses (none found). We've removed all our inits and are still crashing. The drive has been updated with the latest driver from SuperMac and continues to provide reliable service when used with a Mac Plus. Has anyone seen similar behavior? I'd also be curious to hear from people who are successfully using DataFrame drives with Classics just in case problem might be specific to our drive. - George ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Feb 91 19:50:18 -0500 From: tdh@po.cwru.edu (Thomas D. Halter) Subject: Mac II->IIfx upgrade report Well, here is a summary of my findings about the Mac II->IIfx upgrade. 1. A Mac II with at least 2MB of RAM can run System 7. With the addition of a 68851 PMMU, a Mac II can use the virtual memory facility of System 7. However, because the ROMs are not 32-bit clean, System 7 will not run in 32-bit mode. As a consequence, a maximum of about 15MB or so of virtual memory can be addressed (depending on how many NuBus cards are installed). 2. The Mac II->IIfx upgrade from Apple is pretty much a motherboard replacement. Memory is not included, nor it a 1.4 meg FDHD. The memory currently in your Mac II can not be used in the IIfx, which requires special 64-bit SIMMs. Price for the upgrade appears to be around $2000-$2500. 3. The FDHD upgrade appears to be about an extra $350 to $400. The 800K drive plugs right in to the motherboard and works fine with the IIfx. Several people warn that if you do get the FDHD upgrade to make sure the dealer doesn't try to swindle you out of the 800K drive for some kind of bogus exchange program. The 800K drive belongs to you, and you shouldn't have to trade it in for the FDHD. 4. The end result of the upgrade is a true Mac IIfx. There are no compatibility problems between an upgraded II and a "true" IIfx. Externally, it still looks like a Mac II since you still use your old case 5. Several people had problems using non-Quantum drives with a IIfx. If you have a drive manufactured by someone other than Quantum (all Apple drives are Quantums), upgrade at your own risk. 6. I only had one reply from someone that had a third party upgrade, not enough to form any kind of consensus. Most people said that the Apple upgrade was pretty competitive with the third party options, so that you might as well get the genuine Apple upgrade. 7. Needless to say, everyone praised the performance of the IIfx upgrade, and highly recommended it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Feb 91 11:02 PST From: Robert Front <T121267%TWNCU865@ricevm1.rice.edu> Subject: Odd/Even Pages On 26 Feb 91 09:05:02 PST Jerry Wilcox said: < A couple of recent notes have mentioned the desire to print just the odd or < just the even pages of a document on a laser printer, the object being to < turn the stack over and print on both sides of the paper. It defines type styles for each font which go beyond such things as italic or bold. These definitions include inverted (white on black, also known as reverse video) underline, lowered underline, word underline, dotted underline, strike-through, overbar, boxed, all-caps, small-caps, and invisible. In addition, to printing even or odd pages in separate passes it will also print facing pages "two-up" (in both portrait and landscape mode) and (for a real flourish) it will organize these pages so that they are properly sorted to print a booket if they are stacked, folded and stapled in the middle. That is, in the simplest case (a four-page booklet), pages 1 and 4 face each other on one side of the page and 2 and 3 face each other on the back side; printed on the second-pass. I initially wrote up a long opinionated comparison of Nisus and Word-4 (I now use Word only when forced). However, I decided it looked too much like a flame and have removed it.
