Subject: A/UX whacking...

Netfolks;

I have recently started running A/UX v2; I am very pleased with it,
but I am still having a few problems...

  I. Third party disk drives do not mount under the A/UX Multifinder -
is there any way to access these drives under A/UX other than
formatting them entirely as Unix volumes? I have a Rodime 60 running
well as a purely A/UX disk, but my Bernoulli 20 meg is completely
useless, and I have no way to do backups... IOMEGA tech support says
A.UX drivers available end of summer :-<

II. X11R4 objected to my use of a Spectrum display card - I can run
an Apple card if I have to, but I would much rather get it to work
with my regular setup. Can anyone tell me about the low-level X hooks
for video card access, and how to set up for X windows on a non-Apple
video card?

III. I have not been able to get A/UX to see Laserwriters using
Ethernet; I have TCP/IP and Ethertalk running through an Apple
Ethernet card, and Fastpath 4 gateways connecting Laserwriters to the
net. A/UX works fine through another Fastpath out the Localtalk port,
but if I switch to Ethertalk for the printer connection I don't see
anything.

Thanks in advance!

Attempted to send to SRIDAR@petvax.medcor.mcgill.ca but couldn't so here:

I missed the original post regarding bibliographic software for the Mac, but
I read the summary and it's more-or-less on the mark. There is one thing
that wasn't mentioned, however, and that is that Pro-Cite files are fully
compatible with the IBM PC version of the program. Most libraries and
research centers that use bibliographic software use Pro-Cite for the IBM, so
this is a feature that can be of importance and should thus be given
consideration.

For the record, you may count me as a Pro-Cite dedicatee: I work in a research
library myself. I think that the main reason EndNote is more widely used is
largely a matter of price. Let's face it, Pro-Cite lists and sells for about
twice as much, and even EndNote's $99 street price is a bit daunting. Both
programs are very good and come highly recommended from the field. Pro-Cite
is, as suggested, the more powerful (hence the price difference, I guess).

BTW, there is another program called, "Publish or Perish" (publisher escapes
me at the moment) that lists for about 2/3 the price of EndNote. My
recollection of reviews is that it isn't nearly as powerful as either of the
above programs, however.

Yes, I'm still here. The copy of WordRef that used to be in the sumex

Subject: Defect in Laserwriter Driver?

The Imagewriter driver allows me to define the page size as
anything I choose...this lets me do such things as e.g., a mail
merge of database records printed 10 records to the page instead
of 1 per page, by specifying a page depth of 1 inch.

However, when I call up my Laserwriter driver, it allows no such
thing. I am restricted to US letter, US legal, A4, etc etc, a small
set of predefined sizes. I'm not sure why this nice option was
taken away (after all, is there anything inherent in the laserwriter
process that mandates such restrictions?), and I guess I don't really
care about the historical origins. However, what I would like to
know is: Is there a workaround?

Is there some neat thing I can do with ResEdit, for example, which would
allow me to choose my page size in inches and decimal fractions thereof?
Or, barring that sort of fix, is there a patch floating around the
cubicles of the adept which would do this for me?

Or is my desire weird and forbidden, and am I forever Vox Clamante
in Deserto?

Note: Is my plaint true of all LW drivers, or just the one for
my LaserWriter NT?

Subject: Excel crashes on saving

While looking through an old info-mac (v9n19, about Feb. 91) I noticed that
Peter Griffith complained about Excel crashing on occasion while saving.

I have had that problem recently. I had a row of 800 formulas in a 500k+
file. I would change the first row of formulas & copy down. This would take
forever. Then, it would crash while saving. The workaround was to create a tem-
plate with only the first row of formulas and paste down. Trying to remove
that many formulas also caused problems. I ended up creating a template by
copying into a new file. Then things went very smoothly.

Anyone else have similar experiences?--Pete

According to a recent MacWEEK John Norstand (author of Disinfectant) has

Please pardon my ignorance; I am a relative newcomer to the Mac.
My problem is this: I have noticed a significant difference in
speed between a Mac IIx with 4Mb of RAM and my new IIsi with 3Mb

My questions: Will the addition of the math coprocessor speed the IIsi
to IIx pace or better? Is the video board possibly making the new
machine run more slowly? Even though my apps run well within the
3Mb, would more memory help? Am I correct in assuming that this 20MHz
machine should run more quickly than the 15.7MHz IIx?

Any information would be most appreciated.

I am not qualified to go into the technical details of Erik's claims.
However, I have some personal experience here: I do have a MacPlus
*WITH* internal HardDisk, Fan and small additional power supply. And
there is still *LOTS* of space inside ! The external SCSI connector
goes inside to the HardDisk and from there goes outside again.
A simple and elegant solution. I guess we have here at work 20 or
more such MacPluses.

Subject: MacTCP installation notes

Sirs;

I finally received my docs for MacTCP... I didn't have anything
installed wrong, its just tricky to get it working right. There are
two CDEVs involved, AdminTCP and MacTCP. AdminTCP is for
installations which have a net manager who wishes to prevent
unauthorized changes to MacTCP installations on other machines; it is
used to set parameters on MacTCP files which have their 'PROTECTED'
box checked. For single-user purposes, just pitch it... MacTCP is the
only file needed. Put the MacTCP CDEV in the system folder and open
it up. Fill out the Gateway and Nameserver information (if it applies
to you) and set the 'Obtain Address Manually' button. Ignore the IP
Address section in this window - just OK your entries and return to
the main CDEV window. If the MANUAL button did its work, the IP
Address window in the control panel should now be active for text
entry, and you just type the numeric IP address into the box (DON'T
HIT RETURN, it puts the CR in the box too). Pick the network that
carries your TCP/IP stuff (if you have a choice) and close up. After
a restart, the MacTCP driver should be up and running...

Hope this helps... seems like a stupid problem but it sure confused me
for a while.

An Open Letter to Apple Computer, Inc.

With the advent of System 7.0, 32-bit Addressing, and the
new low-cost Macintoshes, Apple Computer has shown that it
remains committed to enhancing the capabilities of the
Macintosh line of computers without abandoning its users.
However, in that effort to advance technology, past
technologies should not be abandoned haphazardly, nor should
unfulfilled potentials be left unrealized.

Apple advertised and documented the Macintosh II, IIx, IIcx,
and SE/30 as having the capability to address as much as 128
MB of memory, an amount that should be sufficient for most
users years into the future. In addition, Apple had the
foresight to manufacture the Macintosh IIx, IIcx, and SE/30
with their System ROMs on SIMMs. This feature, touted by
Apple as a selling point, was to allow these machines to
easily upgrade their System ROMs at such time as that became
necessary. That time rapidly approaches.

Users discovered that the current System ROMs for these
Macintoshes are not "32-bit Clean." Thus, rather than
having 128 MB of memory space available as they believed,
users of these Macintoshes are limited to 16 MB - even less
after the addition of expansion cards. Businesses,
educational institutions, and individuals have invested in
these Macintoshes, and although 16 MB may be adequate for
many users, many others already find that limit restrictive.
As Apple continues to move towards full 32-bit Cleanliness
in its software and hardware, more users will encounter this
16 MB barrier, and find their otherwise capable Macintoshes
hamstrung by "dirty" ROMs.

Users and administrators have looked to Apple for an
initiative, for some plan of upgrading the ROMs of these
Macintoshes, but none has come forth. Apple designed the
Macintosh II, IIx, IIcx, and SE/30 to be easily upgraded
but has neither utilized the upgrade potential of these
systems nor announced an intent to do so.

We, the users, owners, and administrators of these Macintosh
computers, would like to see Apple make a public statement
regarding its plans to make a ROM upgrade available. We
would hope that this upgrade be made available within a
reasonable time frame, and at a reasonable cost to
businesses, educational institutions, and individuals alike.
We understand that Apple may wish to implement a strict
return policy on the old ROMs to prevent unauthorized
Macintosh clones. We also understand that Apple may wish to
add additional features to such an upgrade, and that those
features may add to the time required. A quality product is
worth the wait required for its production, as is shown by
the eagerly-anticipated System 7.0. Still, we hope that
Apple Computer will recognize the unfulfilled potential of
those Macintoshes with "dirty" ROMs and provide them with
the means to realize their full 32-bit potential.

We thank you for your commitment to the Macintosh User
Community.

Subject: Printing problems

Hi Netters,
I have a problem with one of my Mac connected to AppleTalk. When printing,
I always obtain the same message:
   Searching LaserWriter II
   Status: STarting Job
   Status: preparing data
Then, it continues with the preparing data for hours. Even if I only print
the catalog or very short text files.
I think the netowrk has no problem, 'cos the Mac can find the printer in the
chooser, communications with Broadcast does a good work...
I tried to replace the LaserWriter and LaserPrep files from 5.2 to 6.0.2, and
have copied the Apple version from the system floppies. I also changed the
system and finder... but it continues to wait for preparing data...

Did anybody already have the problem and the solution ?

Thanks for any help.

Subject: Suitcase Updater

I recently grabbed the Suitcase II 1.2.9 updater from Sumex. However,
it fails to display my copy of Suitcase II (version 1.2.1) in the file
dialog box.

I am using INITPicker, if that is any help...

Thanks

Subject: The end of Microsoft Works for the Mac?

Date sent: 30-APR-1991 11:15:42
I heard a most ugly rumor to the effect that MS Works will
not fly with System 7, and that Microsoft has totally abandoned
this program so usefulto many of us non-power-user types. The statement
I heard was: "Microsoft hasn't had an engineer on that software for
months, and has no intention of putting any effort there".

A) Is this true?:

B) Is there anything one can do to/for/with almighty Microsoft to
change this?

Speculations/confirmations/suggestions welcome.

Subject: Tray/Paper Size Choice In LaserWriter Driver

We have just received a DYNAMITE Laser Printer by TALARIS that not only
is 20+ PPM but also does Duplex (double sided printing) and has multiple
paper trays. The problem is : it was bought for connection to our MicroVAX
via EtherNet. It has PostScript built in, along with several other languages,
serial, parallel and EtherNet ports; but no AppleTalk port. If we pick up a
FastPath or EtherPRINT box and hook it up, would the standard Apple Laser-
Writer Prep & driver enable us to command this Genie over AppleTalk? How
would one modify the driver to access the extra trays & Duplexing?
I realise most of these questions should go to the TALARIS tech dept, but
I am curious to see if anyone else has encountered a similar situation.

'till System 7 is a fond memory, make mine InfoMac.

thing? (I have 1.2.5 and it says "New File Format Requires...")

I,too, have never succeeded in downloading gif files. I tried both the ascii
and binary options; I tried downloading to Mac and IBM; I tried playing with
Kermit's parameters. Absolutely no luck. For example, I downloaded the file
coyote.gif (only about 8K) from WUARCHIVE.WUSTL.EDU. When viewing the
file with gif-viewing programs, what I could only see was coyote's two big
ears which occupied about 1/8 of the screen. The rest of the screen was
simply garbage. I did not even see coyote's head or face. The same thing
happened on both Mac and IBM, i.e. I saw exactly the same thing on both
computers. Other gif files I downloaded looked even worse, nothing being
recognizable on screen. Anybody have a clue on this?

I agree! If anyone out there has never used something like MathType or
Expressionist (sp?) they don't know just what they are missing.

If you need to use TeX, MathType will allow you to save your nicely
created mathmatical equasion into TeX format! Who wants to debug their
TeX documents so they work when something like MathType will do it for
you!
