A few people keep posting questions on this.
By examining the files Compact Pro produces
I was able to discern the file format which corresponds very
well to the file format which Compactor's authour send out to
developers.

I thought you might want the file containing the file format.
It contains the file format description as given by Compactor's
authour and by me. It doessn't contain info on how to extract
files from Compact Pro archives.
If you decide not to, that's fine with me.

Sorry about the first desciption (from Compact Pro's authour).

Subject: [*] Mind Mines Bomb Search Game

Just downloaded this from America Online. It's just like the
game game/bombs-21.hqx from the archives, except it works only
in 256-color mode and is much smoother in operation. Also a bit
harder, since it doesn't give you anything to start with. The
online help mentions problems with the Mac IIsi and DAs, causing
the game to bomb, and that 6.0.7 may cause similar problems on
other machines, though untested. I've run it on my Mac IIsi at
home with no problems at all.
For those who don't know to point of this game, you have a grid
of squares (configurable as to number of squares each direction)
in which bombs are hidden. Clicking on a blank square reveals
either a bomb (game over) or a number telling you how many of
the surrounding squares contain bombs. The object being to find
all the safe squares without exposing any bombs.
Remember: Requires 8-bit color.

In answer to your first question about HD under AUX. I ran into the same
problem. The drivers of some manufacturs are not recognized by AUX. The
drive must be reformatted with suitable software. Apple's formater works,
but it only likes Apple HDs. I've heard that there is a ResEdit patch to
the formater that cures this problem, but not seen it. The best alternative
is to use third-party formaters, such as SilverLining, that are recognized
by AUX. I choose the second method and everything works great.
Question 3: A problem that I have encountered is that the EtherNet on
campus is running EtherTalk 1.2, and AUX apparenently (as far as I can
determine) is 2.0. EtherTalk 2.0 cannot see anything that is 1.2

         Hi Everyone,

I have been using "Fruits of Passion", a neat cdev
available from sumex that let's you change the apple in the
upper left corner of your screen into other things. It comes
pre-equipped with a number of icons (mostly other fruit), but
         I added a skull & cross-bones a la "Robocop II" using
         ResEdit.

The problem I am having is that I am migrating from a Mac
SE to a Mac 2si and my great skull & cross-bones icon is no
longer available to me in the "Fruits" list in the control
panel on the 2si. Apparently, only the icons installed with
color resources show up on a color machine - any black &
white ones go missing with this cdev.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do, and with what
tools, to get my skull & cross-bones properly configured with
color resources, or any other way to make them operational
under Fruits of Passion on a 2si in 256 color mode?

             Thanks in advance,

I think that Henry Norr must have gotten this information from Jeff. As I
told Henry, the reason that I'm not updating Disinfectant for the new
HyperCard virus is because Disinfectant was not designed to handle
application-specific viruses which spread via the application scripting
languages. These are radically different kinds of viruses from the "normal"
ones Disinfectant was designed to recognize. Adding detection and repair of
these kinds of viruses to Disinfectant would be a major project, and I
don't have the time or energy to do it right now (if ever).

This is not the first HyperCard virus - there was one quite a long time ago
named the "Dukakis" virus which is very similar to the new one.
Disinfectant doesn't recognize the Dukakis virus either.

I believe that the major commercial anti-viral packages either already
handle the new HyperCard virus, or will soon (SAM, Virex, and Rival). I
believe that there have also been some free stacks/programs posted on the
nets that attempt to deal with it.

Please don't ask me for more details - I'm not a HyperCard expert, I
haven't studied the new virus in any detail, and I haven't looked at any of
the stuff I mentioned in the previous paragraph, so I don't feel competent
to give advice.

Forget issues like "probablility of collision" and "waiting for the token".
The _real_ issues in networking are "What machines can I access" and
"what can I do when I get there". The biggest advantage of Ethernet is
is the wide range of systems that can use it, and the multi-vendor
protocols that run over it (especially TCP/IP, NFS, RPC, etc.)

There is simply NO
PERCENTAGE in buying in to a proprietary networking technology in a
University context -- if DEC or Sun offers you a grant next year,
will you have to say "Sorry, we can't network your machines?"

Computing is too important to leave to Data Processing Center directors.
Make sure you are getting the widest possible base of support from
real users for your networking scheme -- people who CAN and WILL use
the network to advance the work of the University. DP people will have
to follow.

Forgive me if I am too blunt. These are obviously my opinions, not
hard facts -- but I do have over twenty years' experience in academic
computing, and I hope I've learned something in that time.

sigh...i wish i had thought about this before i bought MY 2si.
anyways, to the questions at hands. a math coprocessor would probably
only speed up the 2si if you're going to be using math intensive
programs like excel, etc. And actually, if your spreadsheet doesn't
have any functions more complex than +-/* it probably won't make that
much of a difference at all. If that sounds like you, just get a
great cdev called SoftwareFPU (it was on...um...sumex-aim.stanford.
edu, or maybe mac.archive.umich.edu). What it does is let you run
stuff that assumes you have a FPU (since you've got an '030
processor)... this includes Excel 2.x (i'm not sure whether they fixed
it in the 2.x versions), and another handy init (totally unrelated)
called Laserfix.

In answer to the question about the video board. You hit the nail
right on the proverbial head. The si, like the ci, has built-in video.
While this sounds like a great thing on advertisements, brochures and
the like (yes, i was taken in), it means SLOW SLOW SLOW for
color-intensive work. Try it in b&w and enjoy the speed of 20MHz.
Better yet, get the way cool fKey named Switcheroo (available on both
of the aforementioned ftp archives) v.1.6 (well, i'm not sure what's
the lowest version that works, but 1.6 works for me) and let your
shift-command-whatever keys do the work, instead of having to go to
the control panel. It's darned convenient when i'm working on
illustrator to be able to move semi-fast in b&w keyline mode, then get
a preview and switch to color/greyscale.

your si came with THREE megs?? aw man... yet again, apple has screwed
the eager customer. oh well, nothing new...they screw all their
customers with overpriced pieces... (kinda makes you think--"dang, i could've

Subject: Memories...

Hi! I have two questions regarding memory on the IIsi.
In the two big Mac magazines in the past it has been
mentioned that maximum memory is 17 MB. But after
seeing the call for clean ROM upgrades for older Macs
so that they can access 128 MB, couldn't the si also
access 128 MB? If I'm not mistaken it has 32-bit clean
ROM. What am I missing here?
Next question: I upgraded from 2 MB to 5 MB, and since
I work a lot with color I wanted to see whether the extra
memory would help the speed. As far as I can tell, nope.
I was under the impression that the video memory was
restricted to the permanent bank, so that upgrading the
other bank would help since now less than half the
memory would be involved. If this isn't true, anyone
why it wasn't done like that? It's not fatally slow
by any means (not compared to my beloved old Fat Mac!)
but it is noticable.

Thanks in advance!

Create multiple copies of public folder. Public #1, Public #2, Public #3,
for instance. Put all of them in your system folder. Go to the Chooser and
select Public #1. Click on Customize. For Public Folder Location, put the
name of the folder you wish to make public. Follow the docs for PF to make
sure you do this correctly. For the folder's network name, give it the name
you wish your "clients" to see, say Public #1 (original, huh?). Do this for

Subject: Obscure virus problem (I think) with a Mac SE...

Hi,
I recently had a curious experience wiht my Mac SE (by 'curious' I mean
totally innocent and above board, honest :-) ) I clicked on my hard disk icon
and, for no apparent reason, the label for the hard disk changed from 'SE/240'
to '-'. Then, as I sat there watching it, the name expanded out to '--------'
(I'm NOT making this up :-) ) Finally, the system displayed an error message
which read something like 'The volume/disk could not be renamed (Unknown error
)'
I had Virex INIT 1.7 installed, this did not register any viruses when the
Mac was starting up. Repeated checks with the Virex 2.7 application since have
failed to reveal anything. One funny after-effect was that the hard disk icon,
which had been displayed like a globe, changed to the standard hard disk icon
(the symbol that looks like a diamond with a '-' inserted into it). The Facade
init, which I think was responsible for the globe icon, is still loading
successfully at startup but the hard disk icon has not changed back to what
it should be.

I wonder if anyone has had any similar experiences or could anyone point
me in the direction of up-to-date virus software. Thanks,

Does anyone know about a Scrabble game that runs under system 6.0.x? The
Scrabble available from Virgin Mastertronics (a port from PC's, I think)
runs under System 5.x only, and they have no plans to make it runnable
under later operating systems. A real bummer for LC owners...

for a stuffit archive? i have some old archives that i made with
stuffit classic 1.5.1 and i have since forgotten the password.
can anyone tell me where i might find this information, or should
i just trash the archives...

Subject: Word files PC <> MAC

Hello netters,
Is it possible to keep the style sheet when moving a Word-file from PC to
the MAC and back! with Apple File Exchange?
>From PC to the MAC everything is all right
But the way back (MAC to PC) the Word file (saved as Word for DOS) loses it's
stylesheet. Am I doing something wrong?

One of the secretarys at work has experienced a problem with Word 4.
When she opens the ruler - there is a system failure with ID 4. I
replaced the Word files but she still has the same problem. According
to her there have been no changes to the material on the hard drive
before the problem started.
If you load an old file the ruler works - if you have a new screen and
access the ruler you get a crash.
Any suggestions on how to deal with the situation. She is using a Plus
with a generic hard drive.
My only thought is to replace the system files.
