Subject: [*] Understudy extension for System 7.0

Enclosed is Understudy version 1.0d3. This is a system extension for use
with System 7.0. You also need ResEdit to customize Understudy.

Understudy allows you to customize 2 things within the System 7 Finder:

(1) In System 7, the Finder will offer to open TEXT and PICT files with
TeachText if the creating application can't be found. Understudy extends
this by allowing you to designate other applications (understudies) that can
open certain document types.

(2) In System 7 you can drop documents on top of applications. This is
controlled by a resource in the application. Understudy will let you
designate document types that can be dropped on an application without
modifying the application.

Understudy is distributed free of charge. If you give this to someone or
upload it elsewhere, please include the entire package with documentation.

If you have a copy of ResEdit 2.1 you will find the resources you want in
the Finder's resource fork to turn off the zoom rectangles. The "Empty
Trash" problem is caused because you cannot even check the help files - try
a get info on the trash can!!!!!!! you can turn off the warnings there.
The keyboard equivalents for menu items can be added if you have a close
look - I hacked together a TMPL for the fmnu resources which contain the
Finder's menus and was able to change the key equivalents to my
preferences.

While some of the changes you made to the old system are not immediately
obvious with System 7.0 they all can be done. I feel that your criticism is
based on ignorance of what you have rather than cold hard fact. Your message
is a disservice to all those people who worked long hard hours to
produce one of the most stable system releases I have seen from Apple.
System 7.0 gives you more control of the Macintosh environment than any
previous version and yet you didn't even give it a chance before you
condem it.

FLAME OFF.

IMHO Apple has done a great job in System 7 and should be congratulated on
an excellent product. My experience with System 7.0 has been trouble free.
I installed it, it worked. All of my software runs (except MPW 3.1 :-()
with little or no problems. Many of my System Extensions and Control Panels
do not work but this was expected and updates are available for the most
useful ones like QuicKeys. Now I must be patient and WAIT for the manuals
since it would appear that not all of System 7.0 is easy to master. There
are many great features that I have becone addicted to - being able to
scroll around in a window while draging is one (experiment with how you
position the mouse for speed control). The process menu allows me to hide
the front application (MultiFinder 6.1b9 does this too).
Zooming the window now makes the window fit the enclosed icons rather than
filling the screen (Ya Hoo). And a long list of other great things...

Subject: Command keys in System 7 Finder

A few people wondered how to change the command keys in the Finder,
since the Finder's menus are no longer MENU resources, and so there's
no obvious way to edit the menus with ResEdit. After a little poking,
I found that the menus in System 7's Finder are stored as "fmnu"
resources (although that's not all "fmnu"s are--there are many more
fmnu resources than there are menus). Anyway, if want to change or
add a command key to a menu item, you have to poke around until you
find the text of the menu item's name (e.g. "Empty Trash") and then
change the byte that is three bytes before the first letter of the
item's name to the command key.

Maybe an example would be more clear--to be able to use Command-T
to "Empty Trash", open fmnu #1255 (ResEdit opens fmnus as generic
resources), and change byte number 2C to "T" or $54. Byte number 2C
is three bytes before the "E" in "Empty Trash" at byte number 2F.

Like most things with ResEdit, this isn't for the faint of heart,
and for all I know it may have some disasterous consequences. But
it's worked for me, and I haven't noticed any side effects.

Subject: Looking for utility to change type and creator

I am looking for a utility to allow me to change the type and creator
of a file. I know how to do it in ResEdit but I need to set up an
idiot proof method for normal users. Ideally the application should
be restricted to convert only from one specified type to another
specified type.

BTW, here is the real problem if anyone has a better idea. We are
running CAP/AUFS on a SUN. Sun users have FrameMaker documents that
they wish to edit on the Mac. If they copy their FrameMaker documents
to an AUFS disk the default file type and creator is set to TEXT/unix.
FrameMaker on the Mac allows you to read TEXT files but the automatic
character translation that AUF provides for TEXT files messes up
FrameMaker. If I edit the type and creator of the file to be right
for FrameMaker everything works like a charm. Ideal solution would be
to set the type and creator when I copy the file to the AUFS disk.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: MacTCP problem

We just discovered the following problem with MacTCP 1.0.1. We
have Mac II class machines with ethernet cards, attached to a subnet
hanging off a IP router port. THis particular subnet is dually
addressed, meaning that two IP networks are defined in the router for
the same physical cable plant. The router sends out RIP updates with
default routes (i.e. entries with metrics for 0.0.0.0) for both IP
subnets, the RIP packets are indentical except that one comes from
subnet A and the other comes from subnet B. The router always sends
out the RIP packet for subnet B first and then follows (less than 5
ms) later with the RIP packet for subnet A. MacTCP listens to RIP
automatically and if you set the IP address of the workstation to
subnet B, all works well, if you set the workstation address to
subnet A, MacTCP changes it's gateway from A to B with the first
series of RIP packets that the router sends out. Then, when MacTCP
attempts to ARP the gateway, the router never responds, and this is
because it can't because MacTCP is asking for an ARP on a different
subnet now. (ARP only works on the same subnet)
First, MacTCP seems unable to deal with RIP on multiply addressed
subnets, it should not set a gateway for a subnet that it is not part
of. Second, the second RIP packet is not being picked up on, or we
would get the reverse situation, i.e. workstations on B would try to
use the gateway on A.
Our solution was to turn RIP off for that LAN, but it is not a
suitable longtern solution as we want RIP to work so we can install
redundant IP paths. Note, the detail I have described has been
observed with our sniffer, both in the production environment and in
our test environment.

Subject: SE/30 problem: Disk unreadable !?!

Fellow Netters,
I'm having a problem with my SE/30 that I can't seem to figure out.
One day when I booted my Mac, it froze just before the finder
windows came up. So I hit the programmer's switch to restart.
After rebooting I started getting dialogs saying "This disk is
unreadable: Do you want to initialize it?" with the icon pointing
to an external floppy. But I don't have an external drive !?!
Hitting the eject button from the dialog let's me work for a few
seconds before it appears again. If I hit initialize, a message
says "Initialization failed! This disk is write-protected!"
and then the process repeats. Some applications will cause the
dialogs to cease, even after the application exits. One of these
is HD Backup.
Thinking this might be a hard disk problem (40M internal, factory),
I ran MacTools Rescue, which listed, in addition to my hard disk
and the floppy, "Upper Internal Drive ***BAD Volume". I'm running
6.0.5 if it makes any difference. The problem persists, even with
no INITs, and if I boot 7.0 Golden from a floppy.
Is this a hardware problem, or what?? Thanks in advance for any
help anyone can give me.

Title: System-7 vs. Tops vs. PC Connectivity period.

Hi folks- I have a problem. :-(

As you may have guessed from the title, System-7 on a Macintosh breaks TOPS
real quick. Since I want to use System-7 (it eliminates the need for an
Appleshare server with my situation) and I need to be able to access PC's,
and the fact that Sitka isn't releasing a new version TOPS till *August*,
I need some advice.

What is a good alternative? Will the Appletalk Client software for a PC,
whatever it is and wherever you can get it, work with a TOPS Flashcard in the
PC? If so, where can I get it and how much does it cost?

Are there any other viable alternatives? I have looked at "MacChuck"
>From _Vano Associates_, and it does allow from file transfer and
control of a PC from the Macs (using the TOPS Flashcard in the PC,
and with Liason running on a Mac) under System-7. It is a bit too
clumsy to use when you want ot move a lot of files and subdirectories
around though. Particuarly after you have gotten spoiled and are used to
useing the finder to make things happen on PCs.

Any information or alternatives would be greatly appreciated!

Subject: System 7.0 hard drive problems

Maybe one of you hardware gurus can figure this out....

I'm having trouble getting System 7.0 to run on my Classic 4/105 APS external.
The install works fine, but when I reboot, the hard drive hangs during the
rebuild of the desktop.

The drive works fine running 6.0.7.

When I try to boot from the install 1 disk, I get error 47 (or 41- cant recall)
--reboot with extensions off. To no avail, still hangs trying to rebuild.
So I got a sys 7 startup disk from a friend, and tried to boot from it.
It boots fine, but when it scans the SCSI bus and sees an HD, it tries to
rebuild.....boom....select light comes on...system hangs.

With the drive unplugged, the startup disk works fine.
Well, I started thinking about a termination problem.
I have no internal hard drive, so I thought I had found a problem when I
remembered that the motherboard was swapped a couple months ago when I had
some RAM installed (didn't want to void my warrantee). I took the Classic
to the dealer so he could check to see if the terminator on the motherboard
was left off (aren't terminators put on Classics shipped w/no internal HD?)
Well the terminator was indeed left off, so I had them put another one on.
We then tried to boot from a floppy to reformat the drive, but SCSI probe
found no hard drives connected. When we remove the terminator everything works
fine again.

Does Apple ship Classics terminated on the motherboard if no internal hd is
installed? This is a pretty important question.

Should this terminator be there or not? Right now I'm running without it,
because 6.0.7 only works without it. The external drive is terminated.

Does system 7.0 do some funny disk addressing that 6.0.7 doesn't? Could there
be a bad sector on my drive causing 7.0 not to work but 6.0.7 to work fine?
APS say's they can't duplicate the problem using the same setup as me.
i.e. Mac Classic w/ 4MB RAM, APS Quantum Pro 105 HD.

I think I'm going to send the drive to APS and see if they can get it to work.
But first I wanted to ask the only real experts I can count on (the Usenet
folks) before I go losing my HD for probably a week or more.

If I left anything out, and you have some ideas, please e-mail me, and I'll
explain things further if neccessary.

BTW, this is all using APS Power tools 1.13 as the driver.

Well, I've eventually managed to logon to ftp.apple.com and now have 7 running
on my IIci, and the II at work. Overall I like it, the colour icons and menu
and scroll bars are very well done - but what happened to the buttons? The new
font and sound organisation is excellent and the Apple Menu Items folder is
superb - ResEdit went straight in there!

Balloon help... hmmmm.. I'm sure this is very useful and Apple probably are
right in providing a *standard* way to provide online help but maybe it should
be a cdev and/or system extension? That way those who didn't want it wouldn't
have to have it cluttering there menu bar.

Ok, here's my big gripe - I hate the new applications menu! I really liked the
way it was done at 6 with the click-to-cycle on the right , and the applications
under the DA's in the apple menu. Actually maybe its the proliferation of icons
on the right of the menu bar I don't like. With SuperClock running (which by the
way behaves exemplary under 7!) it looks terribly cluttered. And I don't like
this Hide Application idea - surely it should be against user interface
guidelines? WindowShade is a far more elegant and transparent solution to screen
clutter.

Anyway, apart from that it's lovely, but it's going to take me some time to get
used to all those menus on the right.

Oh, yes, File Sharing looks great but why oh why don't manufacturers let stand
alone Macs benefit from such security features?

Right, now here's my *question*! How the **** do I get all those lovely colour
icons to come out from under their bushels? Especially the hard disk icon and
the inserted floppy icon? There are wondrous full colour icons for these in
the System (or was it the Finder?) but they don't appear on my desktop. Apple
File Exchange didn't show its colours either but I unchecked INITED in the
resource info and re-opened its folder and it coloured up on the II at work. I
did the same on my IIci and it didn't work! MacUser (UK) has a fully coloured
hard disk icon (of Yosemite Sam actually) in it's 7 review. At home I gave a
copy of ResEdit a colour icon from the SunDesk collection - unchecked INITED,
nothing doing. Rebooted and rebuilt the desktop - nada. Them I ran Fix Desktop
and presto! Bothe my copy of ResEdit and the original now have colour icons!

Could someone explain this icon business fully? I WANT full colour floppies!

Sorry, this is getting long, but just another quick Q. Where are the desktop
patterns kept? The ones in the General Controls cdev?

rerendering the whole page for each band. Any ideas as to why this is
happening? I have printed some fairly complex output (from Word and other
stuff) but never seen this wait. This test was on System 6.0.7 -- I haven't
tried it on System 7.

Thanks Mark J. from Apple! I downloaded System 7 from ftp.apple.com, moved
the diskimages to disks with DiskCopy (found in the dts/util directory on same
machine). After backing up (;-)), running the compat checker I upgraded. Went
without problem -- not even a small glitch (then again, I'm a single mac, no
network, etc.). A couple of questions:

1). Why does the instaler install everything -- like the portable cdev,
brightness cdev, etc.? Can't the installer figure out which machine I have and
then run the "for SE/30" set only. I guess I could customize if I wished, but
I didn't.

2). As you can tell, I didn't buy the manual. The most agravating thing about
the finder: I can't figure out how to turn on the titles in the windows. I
often have a file window open, but can't figure out which folder the window is!
(I don't like the one window, all folders display so much).

3). In the general cdev. I tried to alter the desktop pattern. I can turn on
pixels, but I can't turn off ones that are already on (in one of the Apple
supplied patterns)! For example, this means I couldn't make a white desktop. I
tried changing colors (meaninless on the SE/30, of course), but to no avail.
Even without a manual, this isn't a problem I should be having.

I am not, by the way, running VM -- I don't need it yet and I have Think C
4.0.5. Thanks for your time,

Subject: What happens to FinderStartUp?

Hi netters:

In System 6.x there is a file called FinderStartUp which can be manipulated
so that different files or applications in different folders can be opened
during startup. Is there an equivalent thing in System 7.0? If there is
one, what is it and is there a key combination to turn it off when I don't
want it during startup? Thanks for any help in advance.

Subject: X11R4 for A/UX

I copied the X11R4 files and can not successfully get them uncompressed/
untarred. I copied the .aa, .ab, etc. files (since I had to use floppies
to get them to my Mac) and successfully cat'ed them together. I'm also
able to uncompress them with the A/UX uncompress command. When I use
tar to list them or extract them, I get a 'directory checksum error'.

When I use tar on a file that wasn't compressed (ie, Xmisc.tar), it works
fine. I know there was a similar but different posting regarding this
but I was unable to directly mail to the sender, so I thought I'd post to
the net.

Any suggestions?
